Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 31, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Because there isn't much Vonage news today, we'll go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about reaching high level tech support at Vonage, and the other is from a Vonage user who has been experiencing incoming voice being dropped on some Vonage calls. Finally, we'll update Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Next, I am going to write about a Vonage Forum thread that has been named, drops incoming voice after 2-3 minutes of talking. The thread was launched by Vonage Forum Member donalddjd.

He writes:

"I am trying to help a friend debug a problem with Vonage that has never worked right. Its connected to a Verizon DSL modem/router. I have not run any of the tests yet, but plan to soon. Vonage support says there are too many packets lost and the problem is with the Verizon DSL. I have read and given thought and it seems very odd that all the packets are fine for 2-3 minutes (and voice is fine) then all of a sudden the packet lost problem causes the incoming voice to be lost. All that can be done is to power off/on the Vonage adapter and it will work again on the next call for 2-3 minutes.

"My guess is a defective Vonage adapter.

Several pointers follow from Vonage Forum Members.

"I would suggest to you to run the tests with and without the Vonage adapter connected then compare the results," writes Darrell_G.

Next comes our most frequent poster, Steve48:

"You might also just try running the test several times at random intervals," Steve48 suggests. "See if your max pause changes from time to time. The CS techs may be right in this instance. If your service is pretty steady but takes hits every few minutes, it would explain the problem. I've been experiencing similar dropped call issues lately, and I suspect that it's my ISP."

And donalddjd replies:

"I ran the test from this forum, 992,000 download, 382,000 upload, QOS 70%, RTT 38ms, max pause 308 ms. I also ran the test from www.testyourvoip.com if someone would like those tests.

This failure seems odd, the speech is fine in both directions for he first 2 or 3 minutes, then the incoming speech drops, nothing. If you hang up and try another call no incoming speech. Power the Vonage box/off and on and it will work again for another shot. Its not a random thing, it will fail every time after 2-3 minutes.

If this was a lost or discarded packet problem then I believe there would be speech quality problems before the speech drops all together. And it would be much more random in nature."

Steve48 then posts a reply, in which he writes:

"Please post the detailed test results. The ones from testyourvoip would be helpful too. Run them with and without the Vonage box in the circuit.

You may be right about the Vonage adapter going south, but look at your max pause. That's over 3/10 of a second. I suspect it wouldn't take many hits much longer than that to cause a call to drop.

After one of these drops happens, will leaving everything alone for a few minutes bring things back, or do you actually have to cycle power on the Vonage box?

If you also have broadband service and it's different from your friend's, you could try taking the Vonage box home and trying it there. See if the same problem occurs."

Vonage Stock Report

Today  on the New York Stock Exchange,  Vonage stock closed at $2.12 a share, which was a decline of 28 cents from Monday's closing price of $2.40 a share, but then again that was four cents higher than the day's lowest price and that was $2.08a share.
