Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 25, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

It's a fairly slow summer day without much Vonage news, so we'll go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about choppy audio and the other thread is about tying together two routers. Finally, we'll update Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Because Vonage Forum Member sg010 has been having audio problems during some Vonage calls, he decided to seek advice by opening a Vonage Forum thread about the issue. He entitled this thread, choppy audio on the up stream.

First, sg010 provides his basic connection details:

Alpharetta Ga. (Atlanta metro) Comcast cable up speed 7768K down speed 8M Cable Modem - Motorola Surfboard SB5120 Vonage adapter - Linksys WRTG54G wireless radio is turned off using cables only Network setup - cable modem -> Vonage adapter ->

Then sg010 provides a description of the problem.

"PC problem - choppy audio on the up stream, down is fine this configuration has worked fine for the past year and a half w/no issues up until 2 or so weeks ago when people started to ask to repeat what I said I have not experienced a problem hearing what the person on the other end had said."

And as for his Vonage speed test, here's the info included in the post by sg010:

Download speed: 10831272 bps
Upload speed: 820752 bps
Quality of service: 68 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket

Upstream packet order 100 %
Upstream discards 0 %
Downstream jitter 8.5 ms

NateHoy, whose more than 2,100 posts are second among active Vonage Forum Members, is able to read this data and then offer his expert analysis and further suggestions.

Nate writes:

"Your numbers look pretty good, but I'd run some more tests just to see if you have an intermittent issue with the connection.

As a test, disconnect all computers and turn off the wireless on the Vonage adapter and make a few calls. If the problem persists, then the problem is in your Internet connection. If the problem goes away, then chances are your problem is excessive upstream traffic.

Are you using a lot of upstream bandwidth (or even MORE importantly, do you have the wireless portion of your router set as an open network which might allow OTHERS to use a lot of upstream bandwidth)?

Applications that use a lot of upstream bandwidth would include file sharing applications like BitTorrent, Kazaa, etc. Even if you aren't using one, if your wireless network is set to open or encrypted with WEP, there's a possibility that someone else is using your connection.

Also, check your WRTP54G (I assume that's the model you meant) and see what firmware it is running. My WRTP54G works great with the new 5.01.04 firmware, but I'm only using my WRTP54G as a Vonage adapter - I had a lot of trouble using it as a router. Some people have reported problems with the new 5.x firmware, and Vonage will (last I heard) downgrade your router back to the 1.00.62 release if you want them to."

How do I daisy chain is a router-related question in a thread opened by Vonage Forum Member iamme. Clever name, by the way.

He writes:

"I used a Linksys WRTP54G with my Vonage line. I have cancelled that account and moved. My roommate has a new Vonage account. I want to use my Linksys WRTP54G for wireless access for Tivo, etc.

How do I daisy chain my Linksys with her Motorola VT2142-VD? I am also using a Scientific Atlanta cable box/"

NateHoy is back at the rescue again, making a post that refers iamme to this link:

This is an article he has written on that very subject and is available on the Vonage Forums.
