Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll read why it should matter to Vonage why SunRocket is now out of business. Then we'll go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about dropped calls and the other about a Vonage line that doesn't seem to be working at all any more. Finally, we'll update Vonage's stock price.



In The News

SunRocket, which has been a competitor to Vonage for years, apparently shut down for good yesterday at 6 p.m. Eastern Time.

The reason why this is Vonage-related news is that the 200,000 subscribers that SunRocket claimed, are mostly now without Voip service and will be looking for other choices.

I've just got to think that Vonage will benefit from this, and get quite a few new subscribers as a result of SunRocket going away.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member triggs begins a thread that he named, calls keep dropping off.

He writes that he has a Motorola router , Netgear wireless cable modem gateway and Time Warner Cable's Roadrunner broadband service, but the calls keep dropping off.

Triggs then posts more information about his setup.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member kannan notices this and writes: "Obvious reason for the call getting dropped is poor bandwidth. Try adjusting the bandwidth."

Hardwired for years...stopped working suddenly is a Vonage Forum thread launched by Vonage Forum Member foxythecat.

Foxythecat writes:

"I have been hardwired for about 4 years and this past week my phones have stopped working. The Vonage adapter is working fine and I am definitely disconnected from telco. I am afraid that my house has a short in it. Any advice?"

Our most frequent poster Steve48 offers this initial input:

"What happens when you plug the Vonage adapter into the wall? Does the phone light stay on solid, go out, or flash? Are you sure that there isn't a phone plugged in somewhere that's off hook?"

Foxythecat replies:

"The light on the adapter stays steady green. I unplugged all phones and dish network receivers. When I plug into the wall to check I will get a faint dial tone, followed by a slightly louder "off the hook" beep. I have tried to dial when I get a dial tone, but it will not let me. It is definitely something in my home wiring, not the Vonage adapter."

Now here is Steve48 again:

'The steady light indicates that you do not have a short or an off hook condition. When you check by plugging it in, where is the phone that you're using to check? Plugged in to another jack? If so, what happens if you plug it into a different jack? Can you try moving the jack into which the Vonage unit is plugged?

Your symptoms suggest an open circuit, which would be caused by a broken wire or by a loose connection. One thing to do first would be to open the jacks that you're using for your test and give the wiring a close visual inspection. Look for breaks and loose screws. Also check the cords that you're using to connect the test phone and Vonage box to the wall jacks."

To that, thebeaz2, who is a new Vonage Forum Member adds:

"Steve,

I'm having a similar problem to foxycat. My hard wiring has worked for years. However, a few months ago we stopped receiving calls and I realized there were disconnected signals on all of my phones. I have four phones and a Dish Network Receiver all using the internal wiring in my house. BTW, I found it very interesting that foxycat also has a Dish Network Receiver; may be more than just a coincidence that we are having a similar problem.

The difference in our problems is when I plug the Vonage router into the wall jack, my phone 1 light flashes and a phone connected to another phone jack just has a disconnected signal. I've pulled a wire from the Vonage adapter to another jack in another room and it still flashes. You mentioned this could indicate a short. It seams highly unlikely that I would have a short or bad connection all of the sudden at two different wall jacks. Can a short at any jack in the house cause the light to flash?

What is the "off the hook" condition you referred to in other posts? Could this be my problem? None of my other phones nor the Dish Network receiver are plugged into the wall jacks throughout my house at this point. I'm trying to get one jack working and then I'll plug all phones and receiver back in. That said, I don't really see that I would have an "off the hook" condition but I may not have a complete understanding of what could cause this condition.

FYI, in my troubleshooting endeavors to date I have used multiple phone cables and multiple phones so I don't think my problem is related to either of those.

Any suggestions on things I could try next? Thanks in advance for your help."

Steve answered,

"An "off hook" condition simply means that a phone is plugged into the wiring and its receiver is off the hook. That is, the phone is not hung up. This causes the phone light on the adapter to flash as a signal that a call is in progress. A wiring short gives the same symptoms because an "off hook" telephone presents a near short across the line. You absolutely did the right thing to unplug all your phones and such. That eliminates them as the source of the problem.

Since you're still getting the flash, now you need to figure out what has happened with the wiring. Unfortunately, this can be very tedious. I had a similar situation in my own house. After we'd lived here for 10 years, we suddenly had a short in the phone wiring. After a lot of searching, I discovered that one of the cables inside the wall had been pulled a bit too tight where it entered the jack box. The house settled a bit over the years, causing the wire to chafe where it rounded the sharp edge of the box. After awhile the insulation was gone, and there we were.

The first step is to double check that everything is unplugged from the jacks. Then triple check that you're not connected to a land line. (Sometimes someone disconnects from land lines by pulling a plug in an outside box, and someone else comes along and plugs it back in!) Once you've done that, start opening jack boxes. Do a careful visual inspection, looking for dirt, corrosion, or anything else that could cause the short."

Vonage Stock Report

Monday on the New York Stock Exchange,  Vonage stock closed at $2.95 a share, which was a decline of five cents (-1.67%)from  Friday's closing price of $3.00 a share, but then again that was two cents higher than the day's lowest price and that was $2.93a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Monday  were calculated all up as being 830,300 shares.
