Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 16, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

It's a slow news day today, so we'll go straight to two Vonage Forum threads about different issues with a router used with the Vonage service. Finally, we'll update Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Motorola VT2542 Inbound Port 80 Issue is a new thread started by KDWycha, who has long been a Vonage Forum contributor offering advice.

But this time, the tables are turned as he is seeking advice.

KDWycha writes:

"I have just received a Motorola VT2542 for free from Vonage because I purchased a faulty WRTP54G at a retail outlet.

Anyway I setup the router so that I can use my apache web server. I have placed in Port Forwarding & IP Filters port 80 for the IP address of the computer that the apache server is on to allow inbound access to port 80. That internal ip of course would be Now when I try accessing my website either from another computer in the house or this computer trying my ISP's ip or the address I keep getting the Motorola router login screen. When I try local host i get the "It Works" thing from the default apache setup.

Anyway what am I doing wrong here? Is there some other setting in this router that I messed up on?"

EzCo, who is another Vonage Forum Member who frequently gives advice, asks:

"It's probably because your Motorola's management webpage is using port 80. When someone connects to your website, they are connecting to the WAN IP address assigned to the Motorola. Since the Moto itself is listening on port 80, it takes precedence over your port forwarding.

Select another port for either your Moto or your website."

Meanwhile, we can see that KDWycha has been working on another solution. He writes:

"Well I finally had a chance to try from remote and it does allow me to connect to port 80. For some reason when I try to connect from the local network I get the Motorola router setup I have to enter http://localhost/ to get my website to come up.

How would I manage to set this up so i can go to and get my website to come up? I'm also having problems with Darwin streaming server as well...can access it from http://localhost:port but not my internet IP or the regular host."

Vonage Forum Member ajdedo asks, Does Motorola VT2542 reset settings when powered off?

Ajdedo writes:

"I've spent a lot of time setting up port forwarding and trying to reserve an IP for a specific MAC address. Everything seemed to be fine until I started having problems with my Internet connection.

I unplugged and replugged everything (Modem, Router, etc) and everything works fine again, however ALL MY SETTING seem to have disappeared!

So, Does the Motorola VT2542 reset to factory defaults when unplugged? And is there any way to avoid that?"

Fellow Vonage Forum Member Darrell_G answers:

"I have not experienced any resetting to factory defaults from a power failure or through manually disconnecting the power from my cable modem or the VT2542 itself. When the power resumes, the security settings and any other settings I've setup for the VT2542 are still intact.

In your instance, does it only happen when you lose internet connectivity due to your isp, or also when you manually disconnect the power from your VT2542? It seems alot of users are having this issue (loss of settings) when power connectivity is lost to the VT2542.

I've never heard of router settings being lost due to problems with your internet connection...Have you contacted Vonage about this?"

And then ajdedo responds again by writing,

"I know, I thought it was strange too. My 2 old Linksys which I don't use anymore, never did that.

It only happens when I unplug it. I've turned the power off to the VT2542 about 3 or 4 times in the last month, and I've lost my settings every time.

Thankfully it doesn't happen when I lose my internet connection because of my ISP. That would be everyday!!"
