Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 9, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. For our U.S. readers, I hope you all had a great Fourth of July weekend!

In the news, we will come to learn about Vonage's new 1 cent a minute calling plans to several additional nations, as well as learn about a new Motorola router available on the Vonage Web site. Then, we'll go straight to a Vonage Forum thread about a router issue, as well as a thread from a Vonage user who is moving within his current area code, but not within his current local dialing area.  Finally, we'll update Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Rolls Out New Router, One Cent A Minute Calling Rates, and More

Vonage made a whole bunch of announcements last week.

It will offer the new Motorola VT2542 router on the Vonage  site.  The router features a four-port wired and 802.11 b/g wireless access point capable of connecting up to two Vonage lines (including a fax). The VT2542  offers "voice over data prioritization" for improving the quality of voice calls made while a user simultaneously surfs the Web, and Virtual Private Network (VPN) pass-through support for at-home workers. The router will initially be available through Vonage's Web site for $59.99 after a $40 instant rebate.

Vonage is also slashing international calling rates to several countries to one cent per minute. Countries affected under this new rate are calls from the U.S. to Argentina, Australia, China, Mexico, Singapore, Israel, Poland and Sweden. Previous per-minute rates to these nations ranged from five to 10 cents.

Finally, Vonage is rolling out a new free calling service for its subscribers. Vonage users can gain access to audible news reports from Reuters when they dial (700) GET-NEWS. The new calling service is free to subscribers. This service joins Vonage's weather, traffic and directory services.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member sg007 has been having router issues. That's why he's decided to start a Vonage Forum thread that he's named, Linksys RT31P2 - phone line down and no internet.

He writes:

"I have had Vonage for 2 years now and so far almost no issues.
I have been using a Linksys RT31P2 so far.
Setup is: Cable modem(Comcast provided) --> Wired router Linksys RT31P2 --> Laptop.

Last week, my phone connection dropped. I can see internet light but cannot connect to internet. If i connect via Modem then it works.
I have a wireless router without phone port. If i use that with my cable modem, internet works !
So -Is the problem with Linksys RT31P2 that it is now old and needs to be replaced - ??? Phone port light 1 or 2 does not come on when i plug in phone cable to phone ports.
Or can someone help resolve a technical issue that i am not aware of with the router.
Comcast responsibility is till internet via modem so they wont help with router.
I also called Linksys and they helped me once and it started working. however it has gone down again and i forgot the steps they had told.
i called up again and they keep putting me on hold ...

Please suggest best solution.
I would also like wireless option. so i had connected wireless router to wired router since i already had a free wireless router with me. Does it make sense to dump both routers and go for a new wireless one with phone ports. if so, please suggest a good one to use with Vonage as well."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member butterman may have the answer sg007 needs.

He writes:

"First based on what you have described it looks there is something wrong with the RT31P2. You could try to call Vonage and ask them to move your line from port 1 to port 2. There have been reports of a single port going back, but if you are saying the internet was also bad then this really won't help any.

If this doesn't work or you don't want to mess with it you will need to buy another Vonage device. I would not but an all in one router for both Vonage and wireless.

If you look around this forum you'll find that many people feel that the Vonage devices are good phone devices, but bad routers.

Just connect the Vonage Router (either old or new) to one of the ports on the wireless router for its connection.

You can look at Nate Hoy's website for more info on this setup.

Now DigGyp66 has an interesting question. It is previewed in the title he's given this new Vonage Forum post he has started and calls, Moving within area code, but not in local calling area.

DigGyp66 writes:

"We are getting ready to move within our area code, but out of our current local calling area. As far as I can tell, Vonage needs us to update our billing and perhaps shipping addresses, and we should also update our E911 address.

Our main concern is this: Will we be a long distance call for people in our new town and a local call for family and friends in our old town?

For instance, we ported our cell phone numbers to a different company because the lack of service of our former provider in our new town. Although we did this, we will still have to change markets (and get new phone numbers) so our phones will be local calls in our new home."

It is here that NateHoy, who is one of our most knowledgeable and active Vonage Forum Members, offers this advice:

"Your Vonage number has a local calling area, and it's no different (larger or smaller) than any other local calling area. So people calling you from your new home are probably going to discover that your Vonage line is a long distance call.

If Vonage offers numbers in your new area, they will change the number for you. There is a one-time fee for this service.

You can also add a "Virtual Number" to your Vonage line and your old neighbors can call the old number and your new neighbors can call the new number and everyone in both areas has a local number to reach you."

Vonage Stock Report

Friday on the New York Stock Exchange,  Vonage stock closed at $3.06 a share, which was a rise of two cents (+0.66%) from Thursday's closing price of $3.06 a share, but then again it was 5.25 cents higher than the day's lowest price for Vonage stock, and that was $3.00.75 a share.
