Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 28, 2007

By Daniel Connor

In the news, we'll discuss the Vonage V-Phone and how it Now Comes With Its Own Virtual Number. Then we would move on to the Vonage Forum, where a member starts a discussion on the coming back of the Caller ID and Beeps. Finally there is the Vonage Stock Price Update for the day.

In The News

Vonage V-Phone Now Comes With Its Own Virtual Number

Vonage Holdings Corp, the Holmdel based largest Voip telephony providers have come up with a small ingenious phone that is installed on the USB stick. This small phone from Vonage comes with an assigned virtual landline telephone number, as reported on an online edition of Times Online.

The headset has a pair of ear buds, a microphone bead and an attached clip that can hang on to your clothing. Setting up this set is easy as you have to take the lid off the USB stick and plug it into a USB port. The unique feature of this phone is that it has an assigned landline number so you can communicate wherever you happen to be. Voice mailing facility is also given to the users that is much useful in case the Laptop is not running or if the USB stick is not plugged in. Users can be rest assured that a single call will not be missed. The system works through a broadband wired/ wireless connection.

Laureltn started a new thread titled," Caller ID & Beeps are back."

Laureltn started the thread as," My friends are getting sick of the beeps. We've been plagued with them from the day we got Vonage some 3+ years ago. But I'm really tired of them telling me it sounds like a 2-year-old playing with the touchtone phone every 30 seconds. I've called support about the beeps at least six times and was one of the first people to report it. I'm at my wit's end on what to do to make it resolve!"

He continued with the thread," Also, about three days ago, Caller ID info changed. What was coming up as "John Smith" and has forever (one of my best friends) is now coming up just the city and state "Valdosta, GA" What was coming up as PCS Phone GA is now coming up as "GA Wireless." Ditto Verizon here in Tennessee. Anybody else noticing this? Trying to avoid a call to customer care."

Darrell_G, a Vonage Forum Master took part in the thread," No explanation for the beeps, I've never experienced that issue before. I wonder if replacing the adapter would solve the problem...has Vonage suggested that to you. Which adapter do you have and how long have you had it? As for the caller ID info for landline numbers, the name of the caller has been replaced with city and state and cell calls are now displaying as you have described."

Laureltn replied to the thread," device is RT31P2 linksys. I can't even remember but I think we started with a Cisco router, did the moto, did another linksys. We've had a maybe four different since we started back all those years ago. Always had the beeps, regardless of the router. They come and they go. Man that is very disappointing if this is what "caller id" is going to. Giving me a city and a state is not nearly as useful as giving me the name of my caller. Got a call from a local state agency in downtown Nashville but it showed up as "Tellico PL, TN." I got my last call and it showed the name of the caller, like it has since we got CID. I really hope Vonage reconsiders what I consider to be a real downgrade in a feature we all rely on."

Photo Jim, a Vonage forum Master takes part in the thread," Re: the beeps, this is a Voip thing. Voip doesn't cleanly pass touch tones through, so what it does instead is try to recognize when you're using touch tones and then reproduce them on its end. If it guesses wrong, you get a spurious tone. It might be that your voice happens to fool the system a lot. (I get beeps very rarely, maybe one a month.) It might just mean that your voice and Voip systems aren't very compatible and you might be better served by using a traditional phone line."

He continued," As for the name display issue; it's possible that Vonage is displaying whatever information it has. Name information isn't always available. Perhaps it's displaying this information instead of merely displaying "name unknown". I don't know for sure, just a theory..."

Laureltn added in," yeah, women have more problems with beeps than men. It really hates it when you laugh and fortunately I usually am laughing a good bit of the time in my life. No, there's definitely something changed with my CID in the last 24 to 48 hours. I am going to reset the modem and see if it makes any difference and then call support. I don't want my CID to be this generic going forward!!!"

Photo Jim replied," Well, there you go. Stop laughing on the phone then."

Darrell_G replied to the thread," Caller ID information from landline callers is now displaying the caller's name along with the phone number. Cell phone callers are displayed as "Cell Phone" XX (XX=State abbreviation) plus the phone number. So it's back to normal, for now anyway."

Laureltn added in," yup. The last call I just got showed me a caller's name and that was great to see. We'll hope it holds. But then I'll get all happy and start making the phone beep when I talk again."

Lupty, a new Forum Member joined in the thread," I had an enormous amount of beeping on my line and finally figured out that the Linksys router was too hot. Please see this topic for more information: topic on the beeps."

Laureltn concluded the thread on a note of thanksgiving," thanks so much for trying!! Ours is on top of a file cabinet. Only thing on it is another router. I can separate them and see -- but we had the beeps back when we didn't have the second router and also had a totally different brand. I think I'm still a victim of "chick beep".
