Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - June 27, 2007

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 27, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Today the Vonage News is little light, so we move on to the Vonage Forum, where a member initiates a discussion on India, Mumbai- VT2142…not working. Finally there is the Vonage Stock Price Update for the day.

In The Vonage Voip Forum

Princess started a new thread titled," India, Mumbai- VT2142…not working."

Princess puts forth the problem as," Hi I've just moved to India and have friends here who use Vonage. The advised me to get one too, to be able to stay in touch with my husband and family in the US. The power light is constantly blinking the internet light comes on and my Ethernet light doesn't come on at all. It also doesn't connect thru Wan pppoe at all but it does connect directly from the internet modem to the computer but not thru the Vonage modem. Please help I'm very frustrated, I've been paying for this product since and have not been able to use it. Please Help"

Bngdup added to the thread," Ok Suzie, it sounds like you have a pretty basic setup. One computer, one Vonage device, one modem. Now what I can gather from your post is that connecting your computer to the modem will allow you to access the internet. This means your internet service is up and running. Good."

He continued with the thread," Now I see a reference here to PPPoe so I am going to assume you have DSL in Mumbai. Your PC may already be setup to use it but your Vonage device most likely is not. That's okay because it is easy to set up your Vonage device for that. You need to first obtain your PPPoe username and password from your ISP in Mumbai, next you can login to your VT2142 by connecting your computer to the yellow port on the back. Give your computer a moment to sync up with the Device, then open an internet browser and navigate to"

He further added," Both the username and password will be "router". Once logged in you can go to the BASIC menu, then WAN Setup, then enter your PPPoe info, connect the Vonage device to your modem through the blue port on the back, and click apply. Reboot everything after that and you should be all setup. If anything you can consult your ISP's tech support or repost in this forum."

Princess added on to the thread," Yes, I know it sounds so simple and it's probably some simple thing I'm missing but it is driving me craaazzzzzyyy.....I've tried everything you said and I'm going to try it again...I'll let you know how it turns out. Thank you."

Steve48 added to thread," You may want to look at this thread. The situation is pretty much as Bngdup described it, but you could have trouble logging on to the router with your computer. The reason is that the router, by default, uses DHCP, and your computer is currently set up to log on to a PPPOE account as Bngdp said."

He continued with the thread," Once you've determined how the computer is currently set up, you'll probably want to change it so that it gets its address dynamically (DHCP). That will let it connect to the router. Then you change the router so that it does what the computer is doing now. Keep in mind that your ISP is one of your resources. If they're worth a hoot in Hades, they should be willing to help you in setting up a router."

Princess replied to the thread," Hi Guys, Thanks for your help. And Steve I did find that thread much earlier and read it before.....just for Bombayites out there I'm with YOU Telecom......I tried it a few times also, i read something about where India doesn't support Vonage and all that good, I didn't bother calling my ISP. But after what you wrote, I decided to call them and apparently all that was needed was my WAN MAC ID.....then I switched off everything in the right order and just gave it a few minutes and turned it back phone & power light was my excitement I called my sister and woke her up in the middle of the night......BUT suddenly it did play up again and there was no phone light and power light was blinking....I just turned the comp off ...not re booted but switched it off. Waited for 2 minutes and then its working now. Thank you guys, very very much."

He concluded the thread," Apparently they were a hoot in Hades...they did help me over the phone but refused to send a tech over as they don't deal with Vonage, but convinced me that I wouldn't have a problem logging on, So that was good. Another question...Everything I touched around here like even the power plug (the metal part of it) to my Vonage router shocks me, any explanation for that?????"
