Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 6, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Today's Vonage news is a little light, so we will read an article on voip.about.com. Then we would proceed to the Forum where a member raises a discussion on whether voicemail could be played using Windows Media Player or not. Finally there is the Vonage Stock Price update.

www.voip.about.com

I happened to visit www.voip.about.com. An interesting site with information on VoIP, different features of VoIP, the top 5 Voip service providers and also information on Hardware Devices. The site has a number of articles that contain loads of information on different tools and devices offered by VoIP. There is a separate section that has many popular articles, with discussions on leading service providers and understanding the different concepts of switching. There is a separate section on offers by VOIP, tools section that helps to compare prices, yellow pages and how to find a job. There is a special section with forums, most popular articles and also latest articles. A special section includes information on "What's hot". Elaborating on the some of these extraordinary objects the foremost object that grasped my attention was the Voip phone conversation-recording tool. With a number of features on offers the Voip tool enables you to enjoy the recording facility assisting the user to save on phone calls and conversation. The best element to be vied by both individuals and business the tool stands high on the rating chart both in terms of quality and price.

Additionally, what brought me back to the site time and again is the lucidity maintained by the portal. The site has articles on how to install Voip on a corporate network. Returning every single penny and time you invest on browsing the site, the portal gives you a clear picture on the methods of installation and points on how you can improve your Voip network. Continuing on this note the site has some significant reports, which grab your attention. There are several crooks who are trying to lure people onto a "pyramid scheme" engaging them into the task of reselling Voip objects and promising them to earn huge returns which is too good to be true. The site becomes more informative and interesting entailing a visitor to cling on to the site churning numerous detailing related to all the high-end communication devices. The portal elaborates on some freshly launched IP phones which when deployed with Voip turns worth to the price you spend. These IP phones with Voip service inclusion conclude the usage of a phone adapter as well.

In The Vonage Voip Forum

Captjoe started a new thread titled," Can't play voicemail using Windows Media Player."

Captjoe, anew Forum member puts forth the issue as," Vonage voicemail had been working great...I'd get the email saying I had a voicemail, and the .wav file was attached. I'd click on it and WMP would play it. Great. Then my laptop crashed. So I got a new one, it came with WMP 11, and guess what...it would not play the voicemail. It WOULD play all other .wav files just fine. So, I saved the voicemail .wav file to the desktop so I could play it directly and NOT form Outlook, but the results were the same...no play!"

He continued with the thread," I called tech support at Vonage, and we determined I WAS able to play the voicemail using Real player. I thought maybe WMP 11 was the problem; as my old laptop would play the voicemails just fine using WMP 10. So, I uninstalled WMP 11 and reinstalled WMP 10. Same problem...it would NOT play the voicemails, but WOULD play any other .wav file. I know I can simply use Real player to listen to the voice mails, but does anyone have any ideas WHY WMP won't let me play them?"

He provided additional info on his thread," I installed some codecs on WMP to be bale to watch DVDs, but then I uninstalled them all and reverted back to just the basic WMP without any codecs."

Roscopco joined in," What is the error code you are getting? I haven't used Windows Media Player or Real Player in a long time, I use VLC Media Player and it is free."

Captjoe replied to the above thread," I'm not getting ANY error message...that's the frustrating part. WMP displays the "title" as "voice-mail" and I get the option to pause...so it LOOKS like it is playing it, but there is NO progress bar movement and NO sound."

Xcruncx joined in the conversation," I seem to remember a problem with the codec that Vonage uses for voicemail and Media Player 11. For some reason Vonage is not using the standard WAV format and from what I have seen the codec that they are using has not been included in WMP11. Did you start having the problem when you upgraded to WMP11 as the problem you are having sounds exactly like a missing codec issue."

Captjoe replied," I thought maybe I could solve the problem by going back to WMP 10, but it still doesn't play the voicemail. A work-around is to associate all WAV files to play on real player (or anything else you want) but now it's turned into a QUEST to find out WHY."

Darrell_G, a Vonage Forum Master, joined in," I'm using Windows Media Player 11 and my Vonage voice-mails play fine. More than likely you don't have the proper codec installed for WMP11 to play your voice-mails."

He suggested through the link,"http://www.freecodecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm Download and install K-Lite Codec Pack 3.15 Full versions."

Captjoe concluded by thanking Darrell_G," Thanks Man...That was EXACTLY what I was looking for...the voicemails now play just fine (at least in WMP 10...I'll try 11 in the morning)...if you're ever in Dubai I owe you a beer!!"
