Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

March 29, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

I have two announcements.

In the news, let's learn about what Vonage thinks about new phone rules just adapted in the UK. Then, we'll go straight to a Vonage Forum thread about a call quality issue, and then a thread that is from a Vonage Forum Member seeking a router recommendation for his Vonage service.  Then we'll update Vonage's stock price with today's prices.

In The News

Vonage Reacts To New UK Phone Rules

The UK's top phone regulator has issued new regulations that specifies Voip services such as Vonage need to tell customers must explain when selling services whether they include emergency services access. Providers must also spell out other limits, including where directory listings are unavailable, and  whether or not the phone would go dead during power cuts. They must also make clear whether operator access and itemized calls are available.

Vonage has now reacted to these new rules.

Vonage said the code of conduct did not go far enough in protecting consumers. "The bigger issue is the barriers consumers face in being able to drop their regular landline and replace it with a VoIP service," said Kerry Ritz, head of Vonage UK.  "For example, people who just want Voip and broadband access still pay for having a traditional telephone line they do not want and do not use." Ritz added the company believes such obstacles have left the UK at risk of falling behind other countries with a more "advanced communications market."

By the way, these and other discussions related to Vonage in the UK have a natural home in our Vonage UK Forum. It's a very popular Forum, closing on 400 threads and 2,000 posts. Here's the link.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member Bozicfg opened a Vonage Forum thread today that he entitles, Phone not working or goes in and out, chopping and echoing.

"I am located in Wisconsin and have a VT2142 Vonage route," he writes. "I have a broadband connection from Time warner cable that is connected directly to their modem when then goes to the Vonage router and then my computer. Also from the Vonage router is connected to a wall outlet to power my other house jacks. I have had Vonage's service since the end of December 2006 and have just recently in the past month been having a lot of issues."

Next, Bozicfg details his issues.

:Now, we can't even use the phone because it sounds so bad, people cannot hear us. Once in a while, the calls will get bounced to my back up number I have listed in case of downtime."

"I had Time Warner come to my house a couple weeks ago to ensure everything was fine, the signal etc.," he adds. "Can anyone help to try to give me some tips, clues or whatever to troubleshoot this to get this resolved. I have already unplugged the cable modem, and Vonage router and my pc. Then connect the cable modem, let that power up than turn on my Vonage router and let that power up and turn my pc on. Still having issues. Please help, if I can't get this resolved I would have no other choice other than to switch service if I can't get a decent line from Vonage so I can have a phone again."

"Check your upload and download speed from your ISP. A lot of times choppy audio caused from inadequate bandwidth speed," advises fellow Vonage Forum Member Lucky8.

Well, it seems as though Bozicfg did just that. But after doing so, he writes, "I did that already but those numbers aren't good. The cable company says that the Vonage router **** up alot of bandwidth which is the reason."

That being the case, fellow Vonage Forum Member mundy5 writes on what to do next.

"If this is your ISP's response, I would first of all, run the exact test with your computer connected directly to your modem," mundy5 advises. "I would do this before anything else.

"If your download and upload test results are equally lousy, then you have your answer, which you can shout to your ISP, that it is the ISP that is screwed up, not the Vonage router," he points out. "However, if your upload and download speeds are up to snuff, then you can tell pretty definitively that you need to either reconfigure your Vonage device or get a new one.

"For our sake," mundy5 writes, "why don't you post the results of your test with the current setup and then run it with your computer connected directly to your modem and post that also, sort of a before and after and we can tell you quickly who the culprit is."

Now here's another one of those Vonage Forum threads about equipment recommendations to use with Vonage. This particular thread is named, Current Voip Adapter Shipped or Best Retail Adapter

"I just joined the Forum and I was wondering which adapter Vonage is shipping if you sign up on the website?," writes new Vonage Forum Member shade6789. "In your opinion is this a good adapter or should I purchase an adapter from a retail store? If so which adapter and why?

"I am a Network Administrator and have dealt with enterprise Voip utilizing T1's as trunks," he fills us in further. "This would be my first experience with consumer based VOIP."

Several suggestions come from Vonage Forum Members.

"The plain simple D-link works very well for me," writes jojopeep. "If you don't need a router I would highly recommend it."

"I have the Motorola VT2442, when I signed up I got it for 'free' I just had to pay the shipping charges," writes roscopco. "I see on the Vonage site that you have to pay for this one but you can get the 2 port VT2142 for free."

"Even if you *do* need a router, I'd go with the VTA and purchase a separate router elsewhere," writes mjstraw, whose real first name is Mark." The router/adapter combos Vonage provides/sells don't do a very good job of routing."

And then NateHoy, who is one of our most active posters, adds," I'm going to second Mark on this one. I have yet to see anyone that is thrilled with the routing, and most particularly the QoS, capabilities of ANY of the Vonage routers.

"For $75 or so, you can get a really good router, then just get the simplest, most basic Vonage adapter you can get your hands on, and call it a love story," NateHoy advises further. "Chances are, if your routing needs get at all demanding, you'll end up buying a real router later on anyway."

Vonage Stock Report

Today on the New York Stock Exchange,  Vonage stock closed at $3.06 a share, which was down 20 cents (-6.13%) off of Wednesday's closing price of $3.26 a share, but then again it was two cents higher than the day's lowest price for Vonage stock, and that was $3.04  a share. Total Vonage shares traded today came out to be1,919,300.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
