Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - March 23 - 25, 2007

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

March 23, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, we'll catch up on Vonage's reaction to a ruling in the patent dispute with Verizon.

Let's go straight to a Vonage Forum thread about an equipment installation issue, as well as an inaccurate date/time display that needs to be fixed. Then we'll update Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Says Court Ruling Will Not Result  Service Interruptions

The U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va. has  issued an order enjoining Vonage from using certain Voip technology named in its patent litigation with Verizon. The order is not immediately effective, however, and Vonage is confident its customers will see no change in their phone service.

The court announced its intent to hear stay argument in two weeks' time. At that time, the court intends to render a decision regarding the stay, as well as making the injunction effective. If the court denies the stay, Vonage will seek a stay through appeal from the Federal Court of Appeals. Vonage is confident it will be able to obtain a stay through appeal.

"We are confident Vonage customers will not experience service interruptions or other changes as a result of this litigation," said Mike Snyder, Vonage's chief executive officer.

Vonage says it has drafted its notice of appeal of the March 8 jury verdict and will file that notice at the appropriate juncture in the court proceedings.

"Our fight is far from over," Snyder said. "We remain confident that Vonage has not infringed on any of Verizon's patents - a position we will continue vigorously contending in federal appeals court - and that Vonage will ultimately prevail in this case."

Snyder continued, "Despite this obvious attempt by Verizon to cripple Vonage, the litigation will not stop Vonage from continuing to provide quality Voip service to our millions of customers."

"Our appeal centers on erroneous patent claim construction, and we remain confident that Vonage has not infringed on any of Verizon's patents - a position we will continue to vigorously assert in federal appeals court," adds Sharon O'Leary, Vonage's executive vice president, chief legal officer and secretary. "Vonage relied on open-standard, off-the-shelf technology when developing its service. In fact, evidence introduced in court failed to prove that Vonage relied on Verizon's Voip technology, and instead showed that in 2003 Verizon began exploring ways to copy Vonage's technology," she added.

Vonage emphasizes it is focused on growing its business by investing in the rollout of new technology and features, and continuing to grow its customer base. Vonage's accomplishments continue to validate its business model and strategy. Vonage adds it has achieved 19 consecutive quarters of double-digit revenue growth, doubled revenues to $607 million in 2006 alone, and added nearly 1 million net subscriber lines last year.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member sundarn starts a Vonage Forum thread with the title, Unable to install VT2142 on Win2k OS.

"I am unable to install VT2142 driver software on Win2K OS, the installation manual lists only Win98, WinME and Win XP," he writes. "I need help in knowing whether installation is possible (& how..?) on Win2K."

Very knowledgeable Vonage Forum Member xcrunxc follows up with a post explaining the issues here.

"What driver software are you referring to? The VT2142 is a router, it does not require any special drivers.," xcrunxc points out. "Simply connect the blue port to your modem and the yellow port to your computer. A router doesn't care what OS you are running."

Time is off is a new Vonage Forum thread started by Speedwagon. But it is not about a situation attributable to Daylight Savings time starting three weeks early in the U.S.

"Just got connected with Vonage, and everything is fine, except my phone is telling me a very bizarre time/date now," Speedwagon writes. "It was all good, then it went way off. Current time/date is Mar 24, 4:45pm here. Phone tells me it's Sep 11, 7:53am. Is this something on my end? Or is Vonage sending bad info to my phone? I've never set the time/date on my phone before, it always picked it up from the phone line."

Some advice comes from xcrunxc. He writes:

"If your device is not getting the correct time then port 123(UDP) is blocking incoming traffic somewhere, either your router or your ISP is causing this or your modem if it has router functionality)," xcrunxc writes. "When your device starts up, it does not know what the time is, it send a request to Vonage's time server( and the time server send it back the time. If it is unable to get this response it will fail over to its default time, which is what you are seeing.

"Changing the port that your phone is connected to will NOT change or resolve this," he adds. "The time is pulled down by your device, and not a specific port on the adapter. Changing it to port 2 will just be a waste of your time to even try, you can be 100% assured of that. This needs to be resolved by either opening port 123 in your router for inbound traffic or contacting your ISP to see if they are blocking inbound 123 for some reason. Who is your ISP by the way, I can tell you if I have heard of them blocking inbound ports if you provide me the name."

The final post on this thread is also from Speedwagon. In this post, he tells us how he fixed the problem.

"Well, it seems to be fixed now," Speedwagon writes. "I did open that port on my router, but I didn't see any immediate fixes on the phone. I left right after that though."

"My phone(a Panasonic) always displays the time/date on it's display, but it updates it's time/date whenever it gets a call with the info on CID. So I can set the time/date to be accurate, but as soon as I get a phone call, it changed back to the September time/date," Speedwagon adds. "There is an option to turn it off, but that wouldn't have fixed the main issue here. And it was actually setting it ahead. I don't know if it simply wasn't changing the year, or it was sending the year, but either way, it was Sep 2007, when I went to edit the time/date manually.

And now as to what Speedwagon has done that has brought the successful results:

"I had also sent an email to Vonage about this, and received an email response today. They told me to login, change my time zone to something else, logout," he informs us. "Then, login and change it back to my time zone (Central), and restart the device.

"Well, it's working now. Has the proper date/time displayed."

Vonage Stock Report

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
