Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll read about a Vonage appointment that will enhance their broadband services, and likely lead to other services as well. We'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about a wireless router problem, and then a thread about a router problem. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price. 

In The News

Vonage Installs Key Broadband Executive

Vonage yesterday announced it has appointed Martin Hakim Din as Senior Vice President of Vonage Broadband, one of the company's new business lines developed to offer customers both broadband and voice communications services.

Most recently, Martin was responsible for leading Vonage's Technical Regulatory Strategy. Prior to that, Martin led Vonage's 911 deployment and developed Vonage's LNP (Local Number Portability) solution for a shortened number porting process.

Vonage says that Martin, who joined the company in 2004 as Vice President of Standards and Practices, will lead Vonage Broadband's efforts to bundle both high-speed Internet and Voip phone service for customers who want a unified ordering and billing process without having to create their own package using a la carte services from different providers.

Earlier this year, Vonage announced a deal with EarthLink to resell WiFi in cities throughout the US. Vonage says they will soon be announcing new arrangements with other fixed broadband services to enhance Vonage's growing portfolio of products that will be bundled and marketed alongside Vonage phone service.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member joephu opens a Vonage Forum thread that he has decided to call, Poor range from Vonage/Motorola VT2542 wireless router.

He writes:

"I'm new to Vonage but not new to wireless routers. The range of this unit is very poor in my house It is centrally located but signal strength drops quickly as you move away. My VPN sessions keep dropping due to the poor signal when I roam with my laptop. I didn't expect it to be as strong as my TrendNet TEW-611BRP which is a MIMO dual antennae router but I'm only talking about 35 feet going thru 2 interior walls (wood studs and drywall).

"The antenna on the Motorola is short and stubby compared to others I’ve owned - TrendNet, Linksys, and DLink. I've tried adjusting the antenna direction but it really made minimal difference, but it is omni-direction after all. The Vonage voice service has been excellent so far.

"Anyone else having this issue? If all else fails, I may try swapping out the antenna since it's the screw-in type."

Steve48, who is far and away our most frequent poster, has some advice for joephu.

"Why not continue to use the TrendNet and use the Vonage box for phone adapter duty only?," Steve48 suggests.

RT31P2 Vonage Router - Internet has stopped working is a thread started by new Vonage Forum Member walkies_a. His real first name is Andrew.

Here's what he writes:

"I'm hoping somebody can help! Vonage support have not been able to.

""We have had an RT31P2 for 2-3 years with reasonable success. We have a US router (US number) in our university accommodation in the UK.

Last week with the router in place, the internet stopped working and the call quality of the line became very poor. Occasionally a text based page would load, but pages such as yahoo or hotmail would not load. Without the router in place, connected directly, the internet works fine with normal speed. I can ping the DNS and IP with good response. We have not changed anything in our setup during the past few weeks.

""Vonage suggested playing with the QoS settings, which I did with no success. I have tried releasing & renewing DHCP with no success. I have tried rebooting the router and resetting to factory default with no success.

""Vonage say we need a new router!

Can somebody suggest some other ideas as I think they have given up too quickly!

The first answer comes from Vonage Forum Member sheezhot.

"Ask for Tech Support Tier 3 from NJ," suggests sheezhot to walkies_a. "If they still suggest you change the device if you just have it and you got it from Vonage not a retailer have it exchanged with a new one without being charge. You could have it exchanged if it's still in warranty."

Vonage Stock Report

On Tuesday  on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage's stock price closed at $3.99 a share. That was a rise of one cent (+0.25 %) from Monday when on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $3.98 a share. Then again, the closing price was seven cents higher than the day's low price, and that was $3.91 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Tuesday reached 939,900 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The thread we reviewed earlier in this edition entitled Get dial tone but no outbound calls connect - inbound OK, featured results from our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75
