Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - March 20, 2007

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

March 20, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll learn about a new Vonage-compatible software product. We'll go to this Vonage Forum thread from a Vonage Forum Member who in addition to Vonage, uses an Xbox and wants some configuration suggestions,  as well as a thread from a Vonage Forum Member seeking help with a router-related performance issue. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

New Vonage-Compatible Call Tracker Software Released

Arcosoft Inc., developer of Voip call recording and productivity software, put out a press release today announcing the availability of VONaLink TeamOnCall. While Voip phones are being adopted by small and medium sized businesses at a growing rate, the tools to make effective use of the phones are lacking. In a business environment where a receptionist receives an incoming call and needs to transfer the call to the appropriate representative, the receptionist has no way of knowing which representative is free, unless the company has deployed a costly and complex call center solution.

"Based on one customer's feedback, TeamOnCall was created specifically to address this business pain," says Tony Leung, Director of Arcosoft. "Using passive network packet monitoring, TeamOnCall automatically discovers all the phones on your network and tracks their call status. A receptionist using a web browser can see in real-time if a phone is idle, or in use. No longer will the receptionist blindly try an extension only to find it busy. The customer's call is transferred quicker, with less wait time for the next customer."

VONaLink TeamOnCall works with any SIP based Voip system, including hosted services such as Vonage. TeamOnCall runs on Windows Vista, XP Pro, 2003, and 2000. The company says that pricing starts at $299 USD for up to 5 phones.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Because new Vonage Forum Member ineedhalo would like to alter his Vonage setup, he begins a new Vonage Forum thread and names it, changing my setup...

"My current setup is Comcast Cable--modem(sb4100)---vonage(motorola 5 slot)----router---pc," he writes. "I want to change it to something like this...

Comcast cable---modem(sb4100)----router====vonage,pc
which is basically a swap between my router and Vonage box, whenever I do this it gets up to the 4th beep of the Vonage box which means it is registering with the servers. I really need help on this as I am having trouble with halo 2 and my Xbox."

Many suggestions come ineedhalo's way. Perhaps the most useful of these ideas is offered by fellow Vonage Forum Member brian188.

"I'm going to assume you have 4 ports on your router. Why don't you connect Vonage to one of them, PC to another, Xbox to a third and leave the fourth empty or connect another PC, etc. to it?," brian188 suggests.

"Have you tried this? It seems pretty obvious. With this set up your xbox and PC do not pass through Vonage at all."

Then brian188 adds this diagram to his post:

                                  Modem
                                        |
                                      router
                                    /   |
                               Vonage  Xbox    PC

That's followed by brian188 writing:

"You may also want to change some configs, on your Vonage ATA depending on what type of device you have such as turning off DHCP, etc., but it would not necessarily be necessary," brian188 points out. "You may also need to forward ports/DMZ in your router for the Vonage device depending on what router you have."

And now we will move to Lag in answer & Dial tone - WRTP54G, a new Vonage Forum thread established by Vonage Forum Member usapierre.

"When I pick up my phone to make a phone call there is a 10 sec lag time before I get a dial tone, same thing happens when I pick up the phone when it is ringing, people sometimes think that I am not on the phone and they hear dead noise, I just sit there saying hello, hello hello until the call goes through," usapierre writes.

He adds these details:

Setup: I like in a townhouse association that runs a cat5 into my home and that main line connects to a D-Link WBR-2310 this is a the router that connects all of my rooms to the system via the 4 hub feature, from there I Have the Linksys WRTP54G in the master bedroom with a 5.4 cordless phone hooked up to it, so I can have a phone upstairs and downstairs.

Tried: I have called Vonage tech support and I explained everything to them and they had me adjust the MTU on the Linksys router from AUTO to 1400, I have no clue what that does, but nothing has changed.

Usapierre follows with a post listing his Vonage test results. Offering this info earns usapierre advice from fellow Vonage Forum Members Steve48 and roscopco.

"Those test results are awful," Steve48 tells usapierre. "The download speed is really low, your packet losses on the downlink are very high, and the total round trip time is awful. Try plugging a computer directly into your modem and repeating the test. If it gets dramatically better, we need to look at your home network. If it doesn't, you have a problem with your ISP."

"I used to have my Vonage adapter last in line and when the phone rang it took a few seconds for it to stop ringing when I answered it," adds roscopco in his post. "I have since moved the wireless router last in the connection and now I can answer the phone right away, anyone else have this problem?"

Vonage Stock Report

On Monday  on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage's stock price closed at $3.98 a share. That was a dip of two cents (-0.50 %) from Friday when on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $4.00 a share. Then again, the closing price was four cents higher than the day's low price, and that was $3.94 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Monday got up to 1,013,100 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The thread we reviewed earlier in this edition entitled Get dial tone but no outbound calls connect - inbound OK, featured results from our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
