Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

March 16, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news,  Then, let's go straight to a Vonage Forum thread about a router issue, and then another thread, which is about a Vonage multiple-line configuration question.  Then we'll update Vonage's stock price.

In The News

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member Austen4250 opens a new Vonage Forum thread with a title that describes what he wants to know. He's entitled this thread, Was it something I changed? Do I have a virus or bad router?

"I was trying to forward a port not really knowing what I was doing, I thought I was in my linksys router even thought it said Motorola (not really paying attention) and when it said Default Gateway I typed in: and everything froze so I quickly (panicking) just typed in 0 0 0 0 0 0 in all the boxes," he writes.

"Since then my computer and other laptop has been acting up as such: not displaying some pictures, Google video isn't working , lots of web pages are not able to be displayed and my computer and other laptop is really really slow now (it's a new dell I just got and it has windows vista) so thats abnormal," Austen4250 adds. "Do you think I just got a virus (even thought I scanned and nothing came up) or can you help?"

Vonage Forum Member navydavy2001 is first up with his always wise advice.

"I don't think you have a virus. At this point, if you're unable to access and put back what was there, you should factory default both boxes and start over,"navydavy2001 suggests. "Mucking around without the manual when you're not sure what to do is a recipe for disaster, as you found out. No worries, you can reset them back to when they were 'born' and reconfigure it all."

Then, in his post, fellow Vonage Forum Member roscopco offers his own advice.

"On the back of the routers there should be a little hole press something sharp like a pencil or a pin and the routers should reset to factory defaults," he points out.

We often get Vonage configuration questions from new users and Vonage Forum Members. I say this because we are now going to focus on a new Vonage Forum thread that is named, The Recommended setup for multiple lines??

This thread is begun by Vonage Forum Member carv. "This is my first post here but I am always reading the posts and thanks all for the good info posted on here," he starts off this post by writing.

Let's turn the "microphone" over to carv, as he describes his set-up, and what he is thinking about doing:

"I currently have two voice lines and one fax line thru vonage and need to add a third and possibly a fourth voice line (running a business from home).
Initially, when i started with one v line from Vonage i added the linksys rt31p2 by my PC without any consideration for where it should be on my network. but know i need to probably rethink the whole situation and plan the layout to optimize the network to support all these lines.
What I want to know is what you would recommend as an ideal layout with multiple lines using vonage. below i will list my network info.
Also does anyone know if i can prioritize the Voip packets? (either thru hardware device or router settings or both)

Physical network layout:
1. Cable modem connections thru comcast (according to the "voip speed test" I can handle up to 4 high quality lines)
2. Linksys Broadband router BEFSX41(this is my DHCP Server)
3. port 1 of the broadband router goes to 1st linksys RT31P2 (this one has 1 voice and one fax line)
4. port 2 of broadband router goes to a Netgear wireless router and 4 port switch. then port one of that switch goes to the second linksys RT31P2 (with one v line on it)

I am open to switching from cable modem to DSL or to something else if it is still cost effective. I usually have decent call quality and fax capability but on occasion it does act up some. I do worry that adding the additional lines can cause more noticeable problems unless i can some how improve my network/internet connection.
I do not know if Comcast is offering commercial accounts with higher bandwidths but am looking into it now.

Any recommendations on how to improve chances of having good service with multiple lines?"

Fellow Vonage Forum Member mark_subin is first up.

"Your setup is exactly perfect," he writes, "but make sure that the fax line is always on the first device, also keep all the devices well ventilated."

And after reading that suggestion, carv comes back to the thread he has started and follows up by writing, "Hi Marc, thanks for the reply. To be honest I never even considered ventilation. I will now. Thanks!"

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Monday for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
