Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.  I am sorry for the delay in posting today, I am traveling.

In the news, we'll review the very latest in the patent infringement trial between Vonage and Verizon. Then, let's go straight to a Vonage Forum thread about setting up Vonage service on a Mac, and then there's a thread about configuring an AirPort Extreme router to work with Vonage's service. Then we'll update Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Says Customers Will Not Lose Service

Vonage is assuring its 2.2 million customers that their service will not be interrupted after the verdict was announced yesterday a federal patent infringement lawsuit brought by competitor Verizon Communications.

"We are delighted that the jury rejected Verizon's meritless claim that we infringed their two billing patents," Vonage says in a statement.  "Of the seven patents Verizon originally sued on, they prevailed on only three and we expect that verdict to be reversed on appeal. The jury's damage award represents a 70% reduction from Verizon's $197MM claim. The jury also unanimously rejected Verizon's claim that Vonage willfully infringed its patents.

"In addition, we don't believe there is any basis to support Verizon's request for an injunction and we will have the opportunity to present our position to the trial court shortly," Vonage adds. "If the trial court does impose an injunction, we will seek an immediate stay from the Federal Court of Appeals. Vonage's customers should see no change to any aspect of their phone service."

The jury found in its verdict that Vonage's infringement was not willful. That means Verizon cannot collect triple damages, which can sometimes be awarded in patent infringement cases.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

A lot of current and prospective Vonage customers are Mac users. They will be interested in a new Vonage Forum thread called Concerns re. setup with Macintosh system. This thread has been started by Vonage Forum Member out2lnch.

"I am adding Vonage to my existing system," out2lnch writes. 'I have a G5 Power Mac as my base computer. Internet via Cox Communications through Motorola SB5101 cable modem to AirPort Extreme wireless router. I have a second computer connected to the router via ethernet (along with the power Mac) and three others via wireless connections. Printer is connected to the USB port on the router and is accessible by all computers."

Now, let's get to the gist of out2lnch's question.

"Everything's working fine. I was reading through the forum postings and now I'm afraid that hooking up the Vonage device will be more difficult than merely connecting it to the open ethernet port on the router," he writes. "Will I need to reconfigure the router? Is the airport extreme capable of handling the computer traffic and still provide good telephone service? Is there a preferred Vonage telephone adapter (Vonage site lists D-Link; local stores have Linksys) that will work best with my system?"

At this point, fellow Vonage Forum Member OoTLink offers relevant advice.

"Generally, the device shouldn't require any configuration unless you want to set up port forwarding," OoTLink explains. "All you do is plug it in between the modem and your airport box. Configuration is done via your web browser - safari is more than fine for it. Seriously shouldn't have any issues man, good luck!"

Tell you what. Since we are concentrating on Mac, and AirPort Extreme, let us go to the AirPort Extreme thread in our Vonage Hard Wiring-Installation Forum  section of the Vonage Forums.

The thread begins with some details by Vonage Forum Member Ar, who has started this thread.

He writes:

"I already have a Vonage box and use Comcast as our ISP. We have a Windows XP machine and everything works. I have it set up as follows: Cable>Cable Modem>Vonage Router>PC (Windows XP). Speed and phone are good.

However, I just got an Mac Book and an AirPort Extreme base station and am having trouble setting this up so it all works. (The Mac Book uses the wireless connection, the PC is hardwired.)

I tried the following two setups:
Setup 1:
Cable>Cable Modem>Vonage Router>AirPort Extreme>PC. And then I have the Mac Book using the wireless connection. When I use this set up (after unplugging and replugging many devices in all sorts of order to get them to reboot), the final end result is that my wireless connection is really slow, and sometimes just stalls. But my phone seems to work ok.

Setup 2:
Cable>Cable Modem>AirPort Extreme>Vonage Router>PC. Again with the Mac Book using wireless. When I do this, the wireless connection is really fast, but the phone often does not get a dial tone, when I do get a dial tone numbers are often busy, and when it does work, the quality is poor.

I've looked on-line and this issue seems to have come up before. Some suggestions involve setting static IP's and Port forwarding, neither of which I know how to do!!! Is there anyone out there who can help?
I don't know much about networking, so please keep it simple!"

Fellow Vonage Forum Member Jose_7584 has done just that, providing two sets of instructions. One set is for configuring the AirPort Adapter, and the other is for configuring TCP/IP.

Here's what Jose_7584 writes about configuring the AirPort Adapter:

1. From the Finder (desktop) click on the Apple menu, then click on the System Preferences option.

2. After the System Preferences window opens, click on the Network option under Internet & Network

3. When the Network Preferences pane opens, select AirPort under the Show section.

4. After selecting Show: AirPort, click on the AirPort tab. When the AirPort area opens, tick the option for Join a specific network and input your SSID into the Network field (linksys is the default SSID for all Linksys wireless products). Also be sure to have the ShowAirPortStatus in menu bar option clicked.

Note: If you re using WEP on your wireless network, input Key or Key from your Access Point or Wireless router into the Password field, please input all letters in UPPER CASE

5. Click on the Apply Now button to save your settings.

And now for configuring TCP/IP:

"We recommend setting your TCP/IP for DHCP if you are using a Linksys router on your network.

1. Click on the TCP/IP tab, and select Using DHCP from the Configure dropdown menu.

2. Click on the Apply Now button again to save the TCP/IP options.

3. Power down your computer and power it back up.

Note: If you do not have access after powering back up

a. Click on the AirPort icon in the Menu bar, and make sure that the AirPort: Off option is not grayed out, if it is, click on the Turn AirPort

On option.

b. If you click on the AirPort icon in the Menu bar and find that the option for AirPort: On is grayed out, then click on the SSID and

you should get a connection.

Vonage Stock Report

On Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $4.86 a share, which was down 19 cents (-3.76%) from Wednesday's closing price of $5.05 a share, but then again it was a rebound of 36 cents higher than the day's lowest price for Vonage stock, and that was $4.50 a share, just a little more than an hour before closing and not long after the results of the patent infringement trial with Vonage and Verizon was announced. Total Vonage shares traded on Thursday came in at 4,134,700 shares.
