Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

March 8, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll review the very latest in the patent infringement trial between Vonage and Verizon. Then, let's go straight to a Vonage Forum thread about anonymous call rejection, and then another thread about what might happen if you use Vonage over a satellite-delivered ISP service. Then we'll update Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage-Verizon Patent Dispute in Jury's Hands

A federal jury is now reviewing  evidence in Verizon's $197 million patent infringement case against Vonage.

The eight-member jury deliberated for about three hours yesterday and sent the judge several notes asking for clarification of some terms used in the lawsuit.

U.S. District Judge Claude Hilton sent jurors home and said deliberations would resume at 10 a.m. ET today.

In closing arguments, a lawyer for Verizon told jurors that Vonage had built its business based on Verizon's patents and said Vonage should be forced to pay damages.

Vonage insists that Verizon's patents were invalid and were not infringed upon by the Vonage system.

Vonage's lawyer, Roger Warin, said Verizon is using the patent infringement allegation to try to destroy Vonage and thwart competition. "We didn't take their (intellectual) property," Warin said.

Warin explained to the jury what he said were differences between the technology that Vonage uses and the patents owned by Verizon.

Vonage has said that the outcome of the case would not disrupt its business.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member Neufusion's new thread entitled Anonymous Call Rejection / Screening not working, brings up a popular topic here on the Forum.

"I called the Vonage 1-800# directly and spoke with a sales rep," Neufusion writes. "I told him that I have a service through AT&T that effectively screens out telemarketers and solicitors by blocking anonymous/private callers.

"He told me that Vonage had the same feature," he adds. "I have switched to Vonage and now my phone is ringing 3-4 times a night with automated telemarketers.

The first of several posts in this thread from fellow Vonage Forum Member NateHoy set the tone here.

"Vonage does not, at least officially, have the same feature unless they have added it very recently. A good number of people on the forum have been asking for it for a very long time," NateHoy writes.

"However, there have been rumors that, on certain devices, you can probably get it enabled. Some of the Vonage adapters DO support ACR (Anonymous Call Rejection), and if you call a couple of times you may find a rep who can turn it on for you, IF your device supports it," adds Nate.

Then Nate writes that in his case, since his number was issued by Vonage and has never been in any phone books, he has yet to get a single telemarketer call since July of 2005. "Well, longer than that, actually, since I had a cell phone as my primary home telephone line for two years prior to that," NateHoy points out.

"But I can understand how telemarketer calls can be annoying. I remember those days, and not at all fondly," Nate then adds.

You should really read this whole thread. It's not short, but it is real entertaining in terms of lots of posts between Neufusion and NateHoy.

Concerns on the part of Vonage Forum Member TommyGuun that switching to a satellite-based ISP may cause time gaps in his Vonage service made him decide to open a new Vonage Forum thread which he entitles, wireless internet delay.

"I currently use Vonage through a cable IP," TommyGuun writes. "However, I am moving soon and will be going to wireless internet such as Starband or wildblue."

Next, TommyGuun fires off his question:

"My question is How is the quality and the "delay time" etc," he writes. "Does anyone else use a wireless connection and if so is it fairly decent? I use my Vonage phone for business. I call all day everyday. I am not concerned too much with overall quality but a big delay would probably not work for me."

"One of my friend is also using the Starband or wildblue Wireless connection.....Some times he will be facing serious Audio issues," writes fellow Vonage Forum Member Jose_ 7584. "It may or may not work.......You contact your ISP and check whether they will block any Vonage ports and register you Voip service with them."

Then comes NateHoy again, with some of his always wise advice:

"WildBlue is a satellite service, at least that's the only WildBlue I've ever heard of," NateHoy writes. "In that case, you will face a 1/2 to 1 second delay between the time you start speaking and the other person hears you, and vice versa.

"That's just the way satellite is, since 'the birds' are high enough up that the speed of light starts becoming a factor," he explains.

Vonage Stock Report

On Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $5.05 a share, which was down 17 cents (-3.26%) from Tuesday's closing price of $5.22a share, but then again it was three cents higher than the day's lowest price for Vonage stock, and that was $5.02 a share. We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
