Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

March 6, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Let's go straight to a Vonage Forum thread about call quality issues, and then there's this thread I will write about and it is about Vonage caller I.D. Then we'll update Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

People can't hear me :-( is the to-the-point title of a new Vonage Forum thread started by Vonage Forum Member marchcroft.

"I am having an intermittent problem where people cant hear me when they call me," marchcroft writes, who then adds that he has the following setup:

Charter 5 meg cable DSL connection
Netgear WGR614 V4 wireless router

Next, marchcroft completes his thread-opening post with his Vonage speed and test statistics.

This info gives some of our very knowledgeable Vonage Forum Members enough info to get started.

"Your upload jitter is horrible," advises Vonage Forum Member with the Member name, sinceMay2004. "Try removing the WGR624. Use the VR right off the modem and see if the calls get better. Or try putting the VR in the DMZ of the WGR624."

Vonage Forum Member mundy5 is next up. He has several suggestions:

My understanding is that the Netgear WGR614 does not have QoS which can give highest priority to your DLink. As a result, if you are running any internet intensive programs, it could very easily result in bad phone quality. Even regular internet use would probably affect the call quality.

When I am on the phone, my simple internet requests take a very long time b/c my rt31p2 is delaying my computer request until there is a small gap in my phone conversation, at which time, I see it quickly get my computer request through. It's the upload that is the bottleneck b/c your download has plenty of bandwidth.

You might consider either of 2 steps.

1. Lower the bandwidth and try not to get on the computer too much or run any intensive programs while you are on the phone.
2. Get a good quality router that has QoS so that you can prioritize your Vonage DLink.

See if taking step 1 would remedy the situation enough so that you would not have to do step 2. In many ways, I wish Vonage would only sell the DLink VTA to those with high quality routers b/c it's really a disservice to the customer who doesn't have a router with QoS.

And then Steve48 offers this advice to marchcroft:

"Also, your round trip time to the server is awful," he posts. "Try repeating the test with the router removed."

Now let us go over a new Vonage Forum thread about a topic lots of Vonage Forum Members ask about. The thread, which was started by Vonage Forum Member Neufusion, is called, Caller ID functioning incorrectly since switching to Vonage.

"Ever since I activated my Vonage service, whenever I receive a call on my Vonage phone number, a phone number such as 7605551212 is reported to my Vonage phone's caller ID as 11760555121," Neufusion writes. "It has TWO NUMBER ONES as the first two numbers and is MISSING THE LAST NUMBER. A call from 8881234567 would be reported as 11888123456 .

I" tested this on two different phones," he adds. "The Sony phone has the problem report above. The Timex phone caller ID does not work at all. Both phones worked perfectly with normal phone service from AT&T.

"My caller ID is completely useless."

But as he has so often, Steve48 knows a way that this can likely be fixed.

"This will probably require a call to customer service," he writes. "There are usually some adjustments that they can make. In the meanwhile, if you're using house wiring, see what happens when you plug a phone directly into the unit. Which Vonage box is it, and what firmware is it running?"

Vonage Stock Report

On Monday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $5.09 a share, which was down 13 cents from Friday's closing price of $5.22 a share, but then again it was one cent higher than the day's lowest price for Vonage stock, and that was $5.08 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Monday were calculated up to 890,700 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Tuesday for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
