Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

Before we get started, I have a couple of announcements.

First, it's our birthday! We Launched the Vonage Forums on March 5, 2003. Today is March 5, 2007. So not only are we four years old today, but we are rapidly closing in on a fabulous number- a total of 100,000 articles posted in the Forum since we started. When the sun came up this morning, we were less than 300 articles from that goal! I'm guessing we are going to hit that threshold before the week is out.

In the news, we'll tell you where and when you can hear Vonage CEO Mike Snyder speak tomorrow.. Then let's go straight to a Vonage Forum thread about chargers for the Vonage VTech, as well as a thread about a Vonage feature referred to as call hunt. Then we'll update Vonage's stock price.

Vonage CEO Is Speaking Tomorrow

Vonage CEO Mike Snyder, will speak at the Thomas Weisel Partners Internet & Digital Media Conference 2007 tomorrow, March 6, 2007 at 9:45 AM Pacific Time. The event will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel in San Francisco.

The presentation will be simultaneously Webcast and accessible via Vonage's Investor Relations website at Shortly after the event, a replay will be available on Vonage's Investor Relations website. That replay will be made available for two weeks.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Here's a new Vonage Forum thread called IP811 handset charger replacement. It has been started by new Vonage Forum Member gsnyder13.

"I have the IP811 phone for Vonage. One of the handset chargers is not functioning," gsnyder13 writes. "I called VTech to see if they sold handset chargers and they referred me to Vonage. I called Vonage and they suggested I go to where I bought the unit. BestBuy doesn't have the charger either. The phones are no longer under warranty and I am willing to pay for a handset charger.

"Why do they make it so difficult to get replacement parts?," he asks. "I don't need a new phone, just a charger. I can't find one anywhere! I think it is a rip-off that both VTech and Vonage are giving me the run around.

"Anybody else have experience with this?

Steve48, who is our most frequent poster, jumps in.

"That's a bad scene all right," Steve48 comments. "The availability of chargers and power adapters- especially at reasonable cost- for electronic equipment in general is a real problem.

"You might want to drop Vonage an email using the forum contact page- menu, top left, Vonage information/contact support," adds Steve48. "We're told that gets special attention."

Then you have limey0 who joins the thread with some valuable perspectives.

"One of my IP811 chargers quit after only a few days," limey01 writes. "After realizing that it's hard to get parts, I investigated the problem and found that it was the transformer, not the actual electronics in the base. So I just got my soldering iron out and replaced the transformer with one I had from some other device I'd thrown out - works fine.".

New Vonage Forum Member sharone offers an interesting new Vonage Forum thread entitled, Call hunt set up.

"I am running a 5 line Vonage call hunt sequence at my business," sharone writes. "My problem is that, when call hunt is active, if a call to the number is unanswered, it rings forever, because the technicians have told me to set every line except the last to "No voicemail". If you specify a voicemail box instead, the call hunt simply doesn't work-- a caller to that number who encounters a busy signal get routed to voicemail instead of the next line in the sequence. 

"This is despite the written instructions on the Vonage site that say you can specify a 'no answer' mailbox," sharone adds. "This is driving me crazy. Fortunately, our PBX normally picks up the line, so normally this isn't a problem, but when the power fails, as it does here alot, callers get no voicemail. We are a homecare agency, so having our clients be able to get instructions on an emergency number or even to leave a message can be a matter of health and safety."

Here's Steve48 again.

"I can't help with the call hunt problem, but if power failures are the main source of your problems, consider getting an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to power just your essential communications equipment- modem, adapter, router (if you have one), and perhaps the PBX," Steve48 advises. "A UPS that will keep a computer and monitor up for just a few minutes during a power failure can keep Vonage going for hours."

Vonage Stock Report

On Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $5.22 a share, which was up one cent from Thursday's closing price of $5.21 a share, but then again it was six cents higher than the day's lowest price for Vonage stock, and that was $5.16 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Friday were calculated up to 949,400 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75
