Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

March 2, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, I'd like to repeat an announcement I first made in Wednesday's Digest:

In an effort to assist me in dealing with spam posts and other rule violations, I have installed a new post report feature. Logged in member will now see in every post. Clicking on it will generate a simple popup box for post reporting. It then will notify me immediately.

Members are asked to use this tool and to not respond to the offending post.

In the news, we'll tell you where and .when you can hear Vonage's CEO speak. Then let's go straight to a Vonage Forum thread about QoS (Quality of Service), as well as a thread about phone and fax. Then we'll update Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage CEO Is Speaking Next Week

Vonage CEO Mike Snyder, will speak at the Thomas Weisel Partners Internet & Digital Media Conference 2007 this coming Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at 9:45 AM Pacific Time. The event will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel in San Francisco.

The presentation will be simultaneously webcast and accessible via Vonage's Investor Relations website at http://ir.vonage.com. Shortly after the event, a replay will be available on Vonage's Investor Relations website. That replay will be made available for two weeks.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

One of the best types of threads we get on the Vonage Forum is when a Vonage Forum Member solves a technical issue and wants to share the solution. Such a thread is What sequence is Vonage - changing priority for better QOS, which is started by Vonage Forum Member CeCeB.

Here's what he writes:

"I have been having garbled/sporadic connections for the last week or so. I found and have been browsing this forum for a few days and want to thank all of you for posting. While no single post helped me with my problem, every post that I read each got me just a little bit closer.

My Vonage box is the Linksys RT31P2. I have a PC and a wireless router D-Link DI-524 for my laptop and Tivo. My wireless router does not allow me to change the priority of the hardware in it's setup.

I had them connecting in this order...
Cable ->Modem-> Wireless Router-> Ethernets into PC & Vonage

Last night I changed the priority to make Vonage the first to get the cable signal...
Cable->Modem->Vonage->Ethernets into PC & wireless (wan port)

After I did that, I had the clearest phone conversation that I've had in a week. I also went from a QOS (Quality of Service) from 80% to 96% - Woo Hoo!

I wanted to share in case something this simple could help someone else.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member mundy5 speaks for most all of us when he follows up CeCeB's post by writing, "Congrats on getting your system to a new level! Welcome to the forum."

Now, let's go over to the Fax-TiVo-Alarms Forum section of the Vonage Forums. There's a thread I'm going to spotlight called 2 Line Phone And Fax. It was started by Vonage Forum Member JNEW.

"Could anyone please tell me what I need to do to make my set up work like it had with AT&T? I have a two line phone with two separate lines (1/2, and then a line 2)," writes JNEW, whose actual first name is Jim. "I also have my fax line on line 2, as I don't fax extremely often, but need it.

"I had line 1 connected as a home line and line 2 as a business line, JNEW adds in explanation, "but connected with the fax coming to line 2 as well. What can I do to continue this set up??"

Once again, fellow Vonage Forum Member  mundy5 offers his considerable expertise. He writes:

"What I would do is get a line splitter (ones that let you share a line) and connect it to the line 2 port and have one split go to your line 2 of your phone and the 2nd split to your fax machine.

"Now you will need a splitter that has a short rj11 (phone plug) and then a splitter that follows so that it does not inhibit your access to the line 1 port," mundy5 adds. I hope this makes sense. You will need something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/AT-T-24101-Phone-Splitter/dp/B00006HO40

instead of something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000AOWWB/ref=nosim/?tag=dealtime-ce-feed-20&creative=380333&creativeASIN=B0000AOWWB&linkCode=asn

Notice how the 2nd one takes up a lot of space and could prevent you from getting a phone plug into the line 1 port.

"The first one has a regular phone plug at one end and then splits off so can you can plug in two phone devices to it," mundy5 explains further. "That way, at your back of your Vonage adapter, you have room to connect line 1 as well. Now there should be shorter lines than the 25 feet shown in the first picture."

Check Out Our Fax, TiVo, Alarms Forum

Since the thread I just wrote about,  2 Line Phone And Fax, came from the  Fax-TiVo-Alarms Forum section of our Vonage Forums, I thought I would once again spotlight that Forum in today's Digest.

Do you use your Vonage connection to send or receive faxes, call the TiVo service for updates, or perhaps most important of all, automatically call your home security service?

Well, if you have questions on issues relating to these needs, you should go to our Fax, TiVo and Alarms Forum. Here's where you can research your issue, or even make a post with your question or questions. This growing section of the Vonage Forum's picked up their 3,500th post last month, and now has more than 600 topics. Here's the link.

Vonage Stock Report

On Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $5.21 a share, which was up one cent from Wednesday's closing price of $5.20 a share, but then again it was two cents higher than the day's lowest price for Vonage stock, and that was $5.19 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Thursday were calculated up to 1,141,040 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Monday for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
