Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 28, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, a couple of announcements.

In an effort to assist me in dealing with spam posts and other rule violations, I have installed a new post report feature. Logged in member will now see in every post. Clicking on it will generate a simple popup box for post reporting. It then will notify me immediately.

Members are asked to use this tool and to not respond to the offending post.

Second, on Monday we passed 37 million page views since the Vonage Forum was launched nearly three years ago. Every time you click on a page here, that's one more page view. So let's see how quickly we can get to 38 million!

In the news, we'll catch up on what's been going on in that patent infringement trial between Vonage and Verizon. Then let's go straight to a Vonage Forum thread about adapter setup, and another thread which is about trying to determine a solution to call quality issues. And we'll check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Key Vonage Figure Testifies at Patent Trial

Hearings continued yesterday in the patent suit involving Vonage and Verizon.

Vonage co-founder Louis Holder, told the court that he had no idea Verizon held patents covering internet telephony when Vonage started out, and began working with hardware and software makers such as Cisco Systems and Dynamicsoft to license their technologies and put together its own system.

Holder also testified Verizon never approached Vonage about possible violation of its patents until it filed suit last June.

"Did you or anyone at Vonage ever do a search [for existing patent filings] in the US Patent and Trademark Office?" asked Verizon attorney Peter McCabe.

"No... we did not feel we had to, because we pieced together components generally available to the public," replied Holder, whose current position is president of Novega Venture Partners, a company subsidiary focused on new product development.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Because new Vonage Forum Member keith6225 has been having problems activating the adapter for use with his Vonage device, he has started a new Vonage Forum thread that he has entitled, Unable to activate new adapter.

"I have been a happy customer for several years, and then my VT1005v finally died today," keith6225 writes.+" After speaking with tech support, I bought a PAP2 to replace it. I spent the better part of 7 hours on the phone with Vonage support walking me through the exact same procedures with the same results.
After going through all the screens to activate the new device and move existing phone numbers to the new device (PAP2), I click the finish button and the next page is "error".

"I was finally told this is a known problem and to wait 48 hours and try it again," he adds.

Next, keith6225 asks his questions:

"1. How can they take 7 hours out of my day to identify this as a known problem!
2. This is a primary phone, 48 hours is unacceptable. What are they doing to correct this?
3. Was outsourcing support really a good choice for Vonage?"

Jayson is the first Vonage Forum Member to reply to keith6225's questions.

"This is because of the problem with their servers and no one in support can solve it except an engineer," writes jayson. "So call vonage, ask for T2/ATS so that they can move your numbers to the new device or create a trouble ticket for an engineer to finish the task."

And next comes fellow Vonage Forum Member jose_7584. He suggests that keith6225 should call the Vonage tech support and ask for Advanced Tech Support.

Poor audio quality and inconsistency with connections is the name of a new Vonage Forum thread started by Vonage Forum Member ebuddha.

"I have been a loyal Vonage customer since August 2003," ebuddha writes. "I have done nothing but rave about the service to friends and family in that time. But recently the quality of service has gone from great, to bad, to horrendous. I can no longer make a call to Canada without a deafening crackle on the line. This was after I reported an issue this week with calling Canada and having garbled under water like audio, and the ticket was resolved.

"All that happened was it went from garbled to loud crackling that makes it impossible to even stay on the line," ebuddha adds. "Sometimes I had to hang up and call a dozen times before I get a solid ringing tone, and knew it was going to be a good connection when I was having the garbled problem.

"So today when I called tech support, their solution for the crackling was to lower my bandwidth settings without telling me what they were doing," he explains. "And I only realized it when the quality of connection was so muffled and poor I suspected something was up. Lowering my bandwidth settings to fix the crackling is not a fix, it's a band aid. I am at my wits end with this. I don't want to shop for another Voip provider but if Vonage can't help me soon, I'll be left with no choice. What do I do?"

Then ebuddha adds his test statistics to this post. This gives several Vonage Forum Members enough information to offer advice. Two separate posts in this thread by navydavy2001 contain the most substantial advice in this thread.

In the first post, navydavy2001 writes:

"Wow, your QOS is horrible, and I surmise it is because the telephone adapter you have cannot be connected first inline to the modem. Couple that with your router, according it's specs, not having any QOS support, and I can see why you might have problems. I would disconnect it all and connect the cable modem to your PC directly, and run the same tests you ran and post the results here.

"I would also consider getting a new phone adapter, preferably one that can be connected to your cable modem, with another ethernet connection to your router," navydavy2001 adds. "OR Buy a router that supports QOS. There's TONS of advice here on what kind to look for, just use the forum search for "QOS Router.".

After an exchange in which ebuddha as well as other Vonage Forum Members add more perspective, navydavy2001 comes back with a follow-up post.

"From what you've given us, and from what I know after posting here consistently for about a year and a half, and seeing these exact symptoms, all signs point to an ISP issue," navydavy2001 writes. "It may not be. But I think it would be wise to check. Who knows, maybe they've done some sort of upgrade that changed the way your connection works. Maybe a squirrel is eating away at a cable somewhere. You are never going to be able to rule that out if you don't have them check.

Then, navydavy2001 adds another idea.

"Another thing is that if you've been a customer since 2003, is it possible your device is dying?," he writes to ebuddha. "That's another thing to consider. The older Vonage devices were pretty much crap anyway, and an over-utilized one is sure to be trouble."

Vonage Stock Report

On Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $5.20 a share, which was an decrease of 22 cents from Friday's closing price of $5.42 a share, but then again it was two cents higher than the day's lowest price for Vonage stock, and that was $5.18a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Tuesday added to 959,900 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
