Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 26, 2007

By Daniel Connor

In the news, we'll read up on what Vonage considers unfair analysis of its patent trial currently underway with Verizon. Then let's go straight to Vonage Forum threads about equipment recommendations, and then there's this thread about firmware for a router commonly used with the Vonage service. And we'll check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Comments On Media Coverage of Patent Suit

Early this morning, Vonage put out a press release about what it sees as inaccurate media coverage and speculation about its current patent dispute with Verizon.

Here's the key portion of the press release:

In the last week, several media reports have inaccurately speculated on the outcome and impact that Verizon's patent litigation now being heard in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va. would have on Vonage's business.

These same media reports overlooked Vonage's strong balance sheet and contingency plans for maintaining uninterrupted operations.

"It is wrong and irresponsible to presuppose either the outcome or the impact this litigation would have on our business," said Mike Snyder, Vonage's chief executive officer. "First and foremost, we are confident we have not infringed on any of Verizon's patents and, in any case, we believe the Verizon patents are invalid."

Snyder continued, "Nevertheless, our financial reserves would allow us to continue normal operations regardless of the outcome. In addition, we are confident that regardless of how this litigation is ultimately decided, Vonage's customers will see no change whatsoever to any aspect of their phone service."

Vonage intends to vigorously fight this frivolous lawsuit and expects to win. The company is confident it will be vindicated and, in the process, Verizon's lawsuit will be exposed as a transparent attempt to stifle one of its most successful competitors.

As the leading provider of broadband telephone services in the U.S. and based on Vonage's current financial position it is well positioned for future growth and success. Vonage's accomplishments in the past year continue to validate our business strategy and the strength of the company.

These include: -- 19 consecutive quarters of double digit revenue growth; -- Doubled revenues to $607 million in 2006 alone; and -- Adding nearly 1 million net subscribers and growing.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

A fair number of our Vonage Forum threads are those in which a Vonage Forum Member seeks recommendations about call quality issues. One such active thread has been started by Vonage Forum Member jstore, who has decided to entitle this thread, need a new 5.8ghz phone to use with Vonage.

We discussed this thread last month when it was first opened, but there is an updated entry worth pointing to.

"What do you guys use?," jstore asked in his thread-opening post. "Since Vonage offers voicemail, a message machine is useless, yet it seems like every quality phone out there doesn't offer just the phone with a minimal base, i.e. no message machine/speaker phone/etc, just charger.

"Just want a phone that's headset capable and has a speakerphone on the handset. nothing else matters," jstore adds.

Well it looks like at least a couple of Vonage Forum Members have some suggestions in store for jstore.

Vonage Forum Member GiNa4XoXo, whose real first name is Gina, is first up.

"I just got the Panasonic 5.8 ghz digital phone and it works great," Gina writes. "It has a speakerphone and voice enhancer and voice mail direct access.

But then she points out that although there's no (built-in) answering machine, the clarity is very good.

"Check out the reviews," she suggests to jstore. "The one I got is model #KX-TG5421. It's silver and is nice-looking too."

Next up is roscopco. This Vonage Forum Member writes:

"I have the V-Tech IA-5849, this has a base with 2 extra handsets. The base plugs into the Vonage adapter or your router and the 2 handsets just plug into a power outlet anywhere in the house, works so you don't need to use the phone jacks.

"With this phone if you answer with the main phone you can transfer the call to one of the other handsets. Once on the phone no one can listen on the other extensions. Has in use indicator and also voice mail indicator. You can select 3 types of ring tones or shut off the ringer, you can program the phone directory, I believe up to 50 names and numbers. Also has volume control.

"I have had no problems with interference with this phone."

But just yesterday, jstore revived the discussions on this thread with a more specific request:

Anyone have experience with this phone with the use of Vonage and a wireless router?," jstore wrote, pointing to this listing on of the VTech IA 5823 - 5.8 GHz Cordless Phone System w/ caller ID / Call waiting:

I'm pretty sure there will be some responses.

Because Vonage Forum Member johann had some questions about firmware for the Linksys RP31P2 router used with his Vonage service, he began a Vonage Forum thread to which he gave it the name, Manually Updating RT31P2 Firmware.

"Ok, so my phone portion of the router died, so I purchased a PAP2 to connect to the RT31P2 that I had, transfer the mac over etc," johann writes.

"When on the phone with tech support they had me restore the RT to the factory defaults and do soft/hard resets," points out johann. "When I originally had this router I was having funny ftp issues, screwed up packets when people uploaded to my network etc.

"I'd like to update the firmware but since its not on the Vonage network anymore Vonage can't update the firmware remotely and since its not a supported linksys device i can't update the firmware that way. Any ideas," johann asks. "Or was Vonage tech support lying to me when they said they updated the firmware on that stuff remotely? the current version is 1.30.01."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member o2bad455 follows up with a post that contains lots of details for johann to consider.

"Nope, they were telling the truth," o2bad455 writes. "Vonage automatically re-flashed the firmware on my old RT31P2 several times over the years without my prior knowledge or explicit permission.

" If you really want them to do it for you, try moving one of your numbers back to the RT31P2," he suggests. "Once that's done, the firmware update should happen automatically within the next day or so (assuming that there is a newer version than what you already have). To make it easier for them, make sure it's directly exposed to the Internet without any firewalls. It probably doesn't matter that the SIP phone line itself is NG. They don't use SIP or the phone line for the updates."

But then o2bad455 suggests another alternative in case johann is interested in trying it.

"The other option is to do it yourself," 02bad455 writes. "Personally, after removing my RT31P2 from Vonage duty, I went ahead and backdated the firmware manually. I found the technique in one of the unlocking threads, but it was much easier and faster than actually unlocking it would have been.

"I've since taken the old RT31P2 completely out of service because I now use a different router that has better features," he adds. "One of these days, I might see if I can't breath some new life into the old box, maybe for hosting my Vonage softphone credentials."

Vonage Stock Report

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
