Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 23, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, some good news. Yesterday, we picked up our 39,000th Member here on the Vonage Forum. That would be haggarwal. Welcome haggarwal! We look forward to reading your posts! Now let's see how quickly we can get to 40,000 Members!

Let's go straight to two 'Vonage Forum threads about call quality issues. And we'll check in on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Because Vonage Forum Member kalipopo has had a connection quality problem with his Vonage, he decided to open a Vonage Forum thread and entitle it, Choppy/slow connections.

"I have recently started experiencing some issues with my Vonage service," kalipopo writes. "Within the last 2-3 mth i have been having problems with my service. During calls the other party complains about the call being extremely choppy and breaking of, also during this time my internet connection speed will drop down drastically to the speed of dial up if not worse. I usually have to reboot my router, modem and computer for things to get back to normal. This will last for a few minutes to several hrs before i have to reboot everything again. This is not the case if i connect directly to my modem or thru a different router a linksys bersr41."

Then kalipopo adds that he has I heard of several problems facing the rt31p2 routers Vonage sends out, but since he doesn't experience slow speed with his Internet connection or any other problems while connected directly to the modem of other router he is left to believe that the RT31p2 may be hosed.

"Vonage claims since I am still within the 1st yr of server they are willing to replace the router, but before I do so I was wondering if it will be advisable to purchase just a regular phone adapter to use with my befsr41since I don't experience any issues while connected to the Internet with that," kalipopo follows up by pointing out. "I was looking into either getting the VTech's IP8100 phone with built in adapter or the linksys pap2. I will appreciate any feedback or suggestions as to what others have experienced."

Next, kalipopo follows up with a post in which he includes the results of his Vonage Speed Test. This gives fellow Vonage Forum Member dheiy enough information to go on to make a post with some observations.

I'll advise you to call Vonage tech support department and let them check the device," dheiy writes. "Ask them to upgrade some settings of the device and roll back the firmware if necessary."

Because Vonage Forum Member rachelfran has been having some call problems, so she starts a Vonage Forum thread which she has entitled, Changing carriers?

"Has anyone switched or considered switching carriers?," rachelfran asks. "I've had Vonage since 2004 and am thinking about switching to one of the $199 for two year deals that come up every once in awhile... while Vonage has been okay for me - i do have a dropped call at least 5 times a week - which is annoying... but sound quality has always been good."

The most complete answer to rachelfran's question comes from fellow Vonage Forum Member mundy5.

Here's what mundy5 writes:

"In most instances, slight disruptions in internet traffic will go unnoticed b/c most of our web surfing is not time sensitive. But for Voip to work well, it needs to have a constant stream of uploads and downloads of voice data in order for it to work well.

When the data is interrupted b/c of bottlenecks or any other disruptions in traffic such as heavy usage in your area, it could result in data not being sent in a steady stream and cause quality issues and also dropped calls.

These can show up on tests that you can run but if I were you, I would start by observing when these dropped calls occur. If they occur during prime time internet usage such as after 5 pm, that should give you a good clue that internet traffic could be the cause of these dropped calls.

To be honest, it is not always easy to tell which one is the problem. But if my reading of posts from other Voip carriers is any indication, it is not a problem unique to Vonage as all other carriers also have occasional dropped call issues.

My cell phone still goes through dropped calls. I don't think you'll ever find a perfect Voip carrier that can claim to you that it can provide 0 dropped calls.

This is a long winded way of saying that it really depends on when those dropped calls happen. 5 times a week is not much if you make a lot of calls. Now if you make 10 calls / week and it drops 5 times then I would be very concerned. Running the Voip test here during various times of the day might give you an indication of the quality of your internet connection.

One way I dealt with the varying conditions of my ISP is to lower my bandwidth to 50 kbps which seems to have evened out some of the choppy calls etc."

After this post, fellow Vonage Forum Member dheiy has an important point to add.

"Try to check the QoS of your Internet connection," dheiy writes, then suggesting that rachelfran call her broadband provider and let them check this situation out as to whether there are dropped calls and whether or not the connection is consistent. Then, she should call Vonage and ask them to check the connection as well.

Vonage Stock Report

On Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $5.33 (-0.74%) a share, which was a decline of 4 cents from Wednesday's closing price of $5.37 a share, but then again that was 29 cents higher than the day's lowest price for Vonage stock, and that was $5.04 a share. We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Monday for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
