Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 21, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll learn why Vonage is going to court today. Then we'll go to a Vonage Forum thread about a possible short Vonage outage and there's another important thread about a Vonage call quality issue a Vonage Forum Member had been experiencing and has been seeking some help on.  And we'll check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Goes To Court Today

Vonage goes to court this week to defend itself in a patent infringement case filed by Verizon.

Verizon filed suit against Vonage last June. Te suit claimed that Vonage violated several of its patents.

Vonage denies violating any patents, claiming that its technology is standards based.

A Vonage spokeswoman said it is highly unlikely that in case that even if the court sides with Verizon, service would be interrupted for Vonage's customers.

"First of all, we don't think we have violated any of Verizon's patents," Vonage spokeswoman Brooke Schulz said. "But if the court finds that we do, we will come up with a solution. And we won't have to shut off service to our customers."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

I think that one of the many underrated uses of our Vonage Voip Forum is that when Forum Members notice that their Vonage service is down, they can make a thread about it and then be able to tell if it is just their service that is down, or if there is a wider Vonage outage going on.

That point comes out in a Vonage Forum thread from this morning and I want to write about now and it is called, My Vonage has been down for the last half hour.

"It is a little past 7:30am EST and my Vonage has been down since at least 7:00am," writes Vonage Forum Member dhlunar, who started this thread.  "I am about to call tech support, don't know if they would be able to help, but would like to know if anyone else is having the same problem.

Then dhlunar briefly describes his setup, in case other Vonage Forum Members might notice a problem there.

"There is a router between my modem and Vonage device," dhlunar writes.."I did try to hook the Vonage device directly to the modem and the same thing. I am using a VTech IP8100-1 and live in Maryland, near Washington, DC."

But then dhlunar updates his same post noting that the Vonage service came back on a half-hour later, at 8 a.m.

Next, Vonage Forum Member Trinijoy follows up with an account of his own service experiences this morning.

"We had an outage. It was fixed by re-routing, one of our servers went down. Due to our redundancy backup servers are running," Trinijoy writes.

"Just restart your device- you won't have a problem," Trinijoy writes in response to dhlunar.

Now, I would like to highlight another Vonage Forum thread. Started by Vonage Forum Member kodiakbeer, it is entitled, Choppy / One-way / Dropped Audio.

Including his Voip test statistics and set-up info in his post, kodiakbeer also describes the issues at hand.

"First couple of months fine at the 3mg download, 256kps upload," he writes. "Noticed choppy calls but no dropped audio or one way."

But now, here is the change:

"After 3 1/2 months change to the 5mg download, 512kps upload and had no problems for the first couple of weeks except the choppy part," kodiakbeer writes. "Then have noticed the one way and dropped audio issue and still choppy. At that time I was still using the old cable modem. Came out to Vonage forum and had seen where people had change their cable modems. Changed mine out to the Motorola sb5120 and all was fine for about a week and then it started to happen again with the dropped audio and one way. Haven't seen any choppy part."

The Vonage Forum Members are linking up to help kodiakbeer. Hey, that's the way it should be!

"I noticed a couple of things," writes mundy5. "First, your test results are fine. Second, why did you disable QoS on your WRT54gs?

"I would enable it and see if that changes anything," mundy5 suggests. "If this doesn't change anything, then consider disabling the firewall on your WRT54gs."

"Both of these changes might help get your choppy and one way audio issues solved," adds mundy5. "I do not see any issues with your ISP from your test results which leads me to believe that it's your configuration. It sounds like you have a lot of internet traffic on your network and QoS would be essential. The firewall might think that the repeated data to your VTech phones might be an attack etc."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member jayson is next.

"Are you experiencing intermittent Internet issues?," he asks. "I suspect sb5120.we discussed it here quite few days before.

"The other thing is your router seems to be possessing SIP firewall," jayson adds, so try setting call forwarding/DMZ and set QoS to favor Vonage device."

Jose_7584 follows by writing, "check for the latest Firmware version in your wireless router.....if not try to upgrade it."

And then kodiakbeer comes back with a follow-up post describing what he did in terms of the advice given him by fellow Vonage Forum Members.

He writes that he has changed the QoS to enable and things do seem to be ok. "Have not noticed any dropped or one way. will see how things are on the choppy this Thursday and Friday when I work from home," kodiakbeer writes.

Thinking more about how this problem may have started, kodiakbeer adds, "I am not sure but I think the QoS setting is disabled as a default when I set up the linksys. Cant really remember since have had it for almost 2 years.

And as for his set-up now, kodiakbeer tells us:

WRT54GS v2- Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster
Firmware Date: 4/25/2006
Firmware Release Version: 4.71.1
Firmware File Size: 2.95 MB.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
