Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll learn what celebrity dropped in on Vonage's headquarters this past Friday. Then we'll go to a Vonage Forum thread about broadband speed performance with Vonage connections, and then I would like to go over this thread about firmware for a specific wireless router one Forum Member is thinking about using with his Vonage service.  Since we had no edition yesterday because it was the President's Day holiday in the U.S., we'll meet our new Vonage Forum Member of the Week today. And we'll check in on Vonage's stock price.

Marco Andretti Drops In On Vonage

Nineteen year-old Indy race car circuit driver Marco Andretti, who is sponsored by Vonage, visited Vonage's world headquarters in Holmdel, N.J. Friday afternoon. He got to meet and greet many Vonage employees and their family members. One of them was Anastasia Lawyer, daughter of Vonage employee Debby Lawyer. Hey, I know this is not hugely important news, but it sounded like a fun day. Here's a link to the article about  Marco's day at Vonage.

A new Vonage Forum Member named lcoul starts a Vonage Forum thread in which he wants to know, does Voip interfere with cable broadband speeds?

"Can anyone tell me why my broadband speed has reduced by more than half now that I have Vonage? Does all Voip interfere in some way with the overall speeds?," lcoul asks.

"It shouldn't," writes mundy5, who has just come off a week in which he was Vonage Forum Member of the Week. 

"Normally, a reduction in speed is a result of a misconfiguration," he points out, adding that lcoul might want to add information in the sticky post to give other Vonage Forum Members added information to help.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member Trinijoy adds another pointer: "If cable modems have old DOCSIS or are older, or are MALFUNCTIONING regardless of age, that speed reduce can happen," he writes. "I am suggesting a new cable modem to rectify the issue."

One of our most important type of threads on the Vonage Forum are the types where a new or prospective Vonage user asks others if a certain type of equipment they are thinking of using with their Vonage service will be up to snuff. Such a thread is Anyone used D-Link VWR-VR (need review), where new Vonage Forum Member mraja is asking fellow Vonage Forum Members about that particular wireless router.

I have read so many bad reviews about linksys WRTP54G. Has anyone used D-Link VWR-VR ?

"Do a search on the forum," writes Steve48, our most frequent poster with 3,400 posts and counting. "There have been a ton of complaints relating to the firmware. Here's one thread:"

But then Vonage Forum Member marc_subin (who only joined us just this past Saturday but already has made 25 very helpful posts) writes that "the firmware is the only problem....... the voice part is great but the wireless is still waiting for that firmware."

In that thread we covered entitled does Voip interfere with cable broadband speeds?, Vonage Forum Member mundy5 recommended to thread-starter lcoul that he add information suggested in the sticky post at the top of this Forum. Because we get new Members all the time, I think I will talk about that sticky post now.

What Info To Post When You Are Having Tech Problems

In the thread we just reviewed called Having some serious quality/ connection issues..., Vonage Forum Member randyperry was able to get help for his issue after he posted the results of his Vonage test results. In doing so, he followed the advice listed in the What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage.... sticky post at the top of this Forum. Because we've picked up so many new Forum Members since we last pointed to this Feature in the Digest, I thought that today would be a good opportunity to review this Sticky again.

A good number of threads and posts on the Vonage Forum are devoted to a technical issue a Forum Member is having with their Vonage service, and questions as to what is causing the problem and how it can be fixed. Being able to provide such solutions is a major reason why we are here.

We have many knowledgeable Vonage Forum members who repeatedly have jumped in and provided advice that has led to solutions. Generally, the best way for them to help you is if you provide as much information as you can about your setup and the nature of the problem you are having.

"Awhile back, one of those knowledgeable and always Vonage Forum Members actually started a thread advising what info you should provide when you start a thread that asks for help with a Vonage-related issue. Trowski's thread is called What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage..... I liked his points so much that I have made this thread a "sticky," which means it appears at the top of the Vonage Voip Forum thread list you see when you go to

Here's what Trowski advises that you post:

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and model
5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from with a test call to Boston.

"This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....," he writes.

And to that I added, "that a detailed title is very important, one that does not have the words: "Please", "Help" or "Vonage" in it. And if you haven't already done so, please take a minute to read the forum rules prior to posting for the first time."

Vonage Stock Report

The stock markets were closed in the U.S. on Monday. On Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $5.43 a share, which was a rise of 13 cents from Thursday's closing price of $5.30 a share, but then again it was nine cents higher than the day's lowest price for Vonage stock, and that was $5.34 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on this past Friday amounted to 1,147,200 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

Voip packets per second =75
