Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 16, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. Because this coming Monday is the Presidents Day holiday here in the U.S., this edition encompasses Friday through Monday.

Unlike yesterday, it's a slow news day today, so we'll go to a Vonage Forum thread on recovering a password, and a thread about echoes on Vonage calls. And we'll check in on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member crosshairs was in the well, "crosshairs" of the fact that he lost the password to the router he uses with his Vonage service. Due to this, he opened a Vonage Forum thread called Lost router password..RTP300.

"I seem to have password protected my adapter..and now I cant remember the password....I tried re setting the router, still no go," crosshairs writes." How do I get into his thing at this point?

"My biggest concern is that I DMZ'd my sons computer so he could host a game, and now he no longer does that," adds crosshairs. "I would like to get his IP back off of DMZ..."

Although crosshairs follows up with a post indicating he then remembered his password, I think that the advice offered by fellow Vonage Forum Member xcrunxc would be useful to cite here.

"If you reset the router then it will be back to the default username and password (also it would have removed the DMZ)," xcrunxc writes. "The default login info for the RTP300 is user: admin password: admin."

New Vonage Forum Member jjeff has decided to open a new Vonage Forum thread and entitle it People calling me often get strong echo.

"Callers to my line very often get loud echoes," writes jjeff. "I've done a lot of searches of this forum, but there seems to be little consensus on how to cure the problem. While I love saving money, the downside of an unhappy wife and teenage daughters is pretty steep."

After a couple of posts in which jjeff has included his Vonage testing information, xcrunxc comes back with a post containing some specific advice for jjeff.

"To start, your round trip time is pretty high and there is some packet loss on your connection which may give you some choppy/dropped audio but I don't think that would cause echo," xcrunxc writes.

"As for the echo, first thing I would do is try the 2nd phone port on the device," adds xcrunxc. "You can change the port your number is assigned to right from your web account under add-ons -> move a line. Reboot your device so it takes the change and test port #2.

"If is still occurs on port #2, then I would try a new phone cord with your current telephone, then finally a new telephone all together (corded if possible to eliminate the possibility of any kind of wireless interference)," he adds.

And then xcrunxc recommends to jjeff that if this still occurs, then he will probably need to call Vonage.

"Have them check what your transmit(TX) gains are set at ask them to drop it down a few decibels and retest," he suggests. "If all of this fails, then it is a bad device."

Vonage Stock Report

On Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $5.30 a share, which was a dip of 54 cents from Wednesday's closing price of $5.84 a share, but then again it was five cents higher than the day's lowest price for Vonage stock, and that was $5.25 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Wednesday were added up to be 3,558,600 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Tuesday for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
