Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 15, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll read about how you, Vonage Forum Members, used the Vonage Forum to report on some service outages yesterday. Then, we'll review Vonage's latest quarterly financial results, which were announced just this morning.  From there, it's to this Vonage Forum thread about Vonage compatibility with Verizon FIOS, and then a request for assistance with the Vonage V-Phone. And we'll check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Reports Financial Results

This morning, Vonage announced results for the quarter and year ended December 31, 2006.

For the fourth quarter of 2006, the Company's net loss narrowed to $65 million, or $0.42 per share, from a net loss of $72 million reported in the fourth quarter 2005.

Adjusted loss from operations  was $53 million in the quarter, down 21% from $68 million in the year-ago quarter.," Vonage said.

For the year, Vonage reported a net loss of $286 million, or $3.04 per share, versus $261 million in 2005. Adjusted loss from operations improved 6% to $238 million from $253 million in 2005.

Revenue for the quarter was a record $181 million, a 91% increase from $95 million in the year-ago quarter. For the year, revenue was $607 million, or 126% above 2005 revenue of $269 million.

Vonage added 955,000 net subscriber lines in 2006, including 166,000 in the fourth quarter. The Company finished 2006 with 2,224,000 lines, 75% above the year-ago level of 1,269,000.

Mike Snyder, Vonage CEO, said, "In 2006, the build-out of the business was clearly seen through the growth of our customer base and the resulting impact of scale benefits," said Vonage CEO Mike Snyder. "We more than doubled our revenue to $607 million and added nearly one million net subscriber lines while expanding margins and improving our overall operating position.

"Our existing user base continues to generate significant and increasing cash flow resulting in an improvement in adjusted loss from operations of 21% from the fourth quarter 2005," he added. "Our investments for growth are principally funded by this cash flow." "We continue to make progress toward our goal of positive adjusted operating profits as early as the first quarter 2008."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Verizon FIOS 20Mbps down / 5Mbps up is a new Vonage Forum thread started by Vonage Forum Member zippydodah.

"I currently have cable (comcast) high speed broadband connection and Vonage service with the RTP 300 Linksys router," zippydodah writes. "I am switching to Verizon FIOS Service in a few days and wanted to know does Vonage work with Verizon FIOS? Is there anything I will need to do in the router setting's or anything else?

"The person I spoke with says Vonage will work with Verizon FIOS Service," zippydodah adds. If anyone else is already gone through this, let me know anything you can that may be of importance. Thanks."

Before closing his thread-opening post, zippydodah adds that the reason he is switching is because cable through Comcast only has 6mbps download speeds and the Verizon FIOS Service has 20 mbps speeds, with 5 mbps upstream- and since both are about the same price per month, it is a smart switch-over."

The most complete answer is supplied by fellow Vonage Forum Member scerruti, who writes:

"I have used Vonage with my FIOS connection for quite some time without problems. There are some issues with Verizon that you should be aware of, but nothing too serious.
  1. Verizon uses phone numbers to identify accounts. You may not have a Verizon phone number since you are using Vonage, I didn't. This has two ramifications
    1. Verizon is going to ask you to set up your account with a credit card, someone recently posted they were able to get a paper bill account after pressing the issue.
    2. It will be harder for Verizon to locate your records when you call for service, you will need an account number that can be found on your bill.
  2. Verizon provides a router that accomplishes two things
    1. Allows them to remotely manage it for technical support
    2. Connects to set top boxes for FIOS TV
It is best to use their router connected to the service and connect your Vonage device behind it, however some people have had issues setting up QoS on the FIOS router and have put their Vonage routers out front.
"You can do a search of the forums for FIOS issues and see what experiences other people have had, but, in general, FIOS is a good Internet solution for VoIP."

And to this, fellow Vonage Forum Member Martlet adds:

"I kept losing dial tone after I switched to FIOS. I port forwarded this morning and haven't lost it yet today. I resolved it via this thread:

http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic18527.html."

Yesterday, Vonage Forum Member cuervo had a problem with the Vonage V-Phone that if at least a few other Vonage Forum Members had it, they might have been driven to drink you know what. Anyway, the issue led to cuervo starting a thread that he chose to name, error reads files corrupt.

"When i connect the v-phone to my computer it detects it but then it says to exit the running softphone instance and click retry to update softphone. then the keypad screen came up but instead of reading "ready to talk" it read "files corrupt," cuervo writes. "I  have tried to call customer service but they are no help. i am in the military and overseas and that is the only means of (communication)."

First of all, cuervo, thanks for your service to our country.

Hey cuervo, Your fellow Vonage Forum Member JEEVA has some advice. He writes:

"Have you any installed any application from internet which needs you to dial out & connect to any system," JEEVA writes. "Sometimes if you are having SKYPE installed on the Same PC. this can be an issue. If this has worked earlier & Now having issue then. TRY THESE STEPS :

1) Try installing the adapter on a diff COMPUTER just to duplicate the issue

2) Turn on the PC, Disable the Windows firewall & disable any Security software like NORTON or ZONE ALARM etc

3) Connect the V-Phone & wait until it gets installed. If it get the display Ready to call then. its an issue with your PC. If still same error. Maybe the Files have got corrupted. You may have to replace the device."

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
