Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 14, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up on a Vonage promotion for today, which is Valentine's Day. From there, it's to this Vonage Forum thread about blocking incoming calls, and another thread about receiving faxes over Vonage. And we'll check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

For Vonage Users, Valentine's Day Is Poetry

Today, of course, is Valentine's Day.

By calling 1-700-VALENTINE from your Vonage line, you can choose a romantic poem to send to your significant other.

Examples include: Romantic Romeo - A reading from “Romeo & Juliet” by William Shakespeare Renaissance Dramatist Romeo Listen to “Sony to Celia” by Ben Johnson Victorian Romeo Put your ex through “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love” by Christopher Marlowe.

After choosing a poem, you enter your recipient’s number, and they get a call in which the poem you chose will be read to them,

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Some Vonage Forum Members wish there was anonymous call rejection on Vonage, but Vonage does not offer that. Yet there is an interesting way to go about turning off all your Vonage incoming calls. This capability is explored in a thread that Vonage Forum Member gizm0 has launched with the name, Does *77 work to reject calls whose caller ID has been block.

"We want to reject calls whose caller ID has been blocked," he writes. "Does *77 work with Vonage?"

I've never tried it but it's my understanding that anonymous call rejection is not a supported feature of Vonage yet," replies Vonage Forum Member of the Week mundy5.

But then fellow Vonage Forum Member jayson responds by making an important point here.

"Yes mundy5 is correct they don't have anonymous call block," jayson points out. "However *77 means do not disturb and it seems to block all incoming calls."

Because Vonage Forum Member JR2007 has been experiencing problems receiving faxes over his Vonage connection, he's decided to open a Vonage Forum thread about this issue. JR2007 calls this thread, HP 7310 - receiving fax problems.

"Has anyone been able to resolve the problems with receiving faxes on the HP 7310?," JR2007 writes.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member JEEVA writes a follow-up post in which he recommends these steps:

1) On the back of Fax machine - Make sure the telephone cord is conn from LINE JACK ( OR ) Picture which says to Wall - is conn directly to Vonage adapter phone port.

2) I am not sure if u have a dedicated Fax line or voice line.

3) Make sure u dont use any splitters in b/w the Adapter & fax machine

1) Set Auto Answer Mode on - There should be a light on the top of the fax machine. Make sure u try toggling it by pressing the button & see if light comes on

2) Go to setup --> Basic Fax setup --> Set Rings to answer to 2 or 3 rings.

3) Go to setup --> Advance Fax setup --> Set Ring pattern to ANY OR ALL RING & Set Error Correction Mode --> OFF.

4) Make sure the Fax resolution is set to Standard --> Usually by pressing the Menu button - u can see a option to change ( Default is fine )

Test your fax by sending to 1-888- ( hpfaxme ) or ( 1-888-4732963 ) .. This is an automated system to test Outbound faxes & will send a reply within 5 to 10 minutes. ( One way to test both Outbound & inbound faxes );

5 ) If it does not work changing speed ( also called as baud rate ) of Fax machine can fix..

For more assistance, fellow Vonage Forum Member tmbeem is "on the beam" when he writes: "You might have better luck asking this question in the Fax, Tivo & Alarms section of the website which is at the following URL: Good luck!"

Check Out Our Fax, TiVo, Alarms Forum

Since  tmbeem  advised JEEVA to check the Fax-TiVo-Alarms Forum for more info on his question, I thought I would once again spotlight that Forum in today's Digest.

Do you use your Vonage connection to send or receive faxes, call the TiVo service for updates, or perhaps most important of all, automatically call your home security service?

Well, if you have questions on issues relating to these needs, you should go to our Fax, TiVo and Alarms Forum. Here's where you can research your issue, or even make a post with your question or questions. This growing section of the Vonage Forum's picked up their 3,500th post earlier this month, and is closing in on 600 topics. Here's the link.

Change In Our Top Ten Frequent Posters Rankings

I have a script in place that tracks the number of posts from every Vonage Forum Member. Based on that info, we can track our most frequent posters.

There's a change in the ranks. This happened when Vonage Forum Member scerruti made a post yesterday. That post was scerruti's 1,384th, which elevated him to sixth place over fellow Vonage Forum Member Trowski's 1,383 posts.

Here's the top ten posters since we kicked off the Vonage Forum back on March 5, 2003:

1 Steve48- 3375
2 reebok- 3200
3 dconnor- 2034 (hey, that's me!)
4 NateHoy- 1886
5 VonageTPA- 1698
6 scerruti- 1384
7 Trowski- 1383
8 navydavy2001- 1016
9 mundy5- 668
10 paul248- 645

Judging by those numbers, I don't expect any more rankings changes anytime soon.

Vonage Stock Report

On Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $5.89 a share, which was a rise of one cent from Monday's closing price of $5.88 a share, but then again it was 11 cents higher than the day's lowest price for Vonage stock, and that was $5.78 a share. We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
