Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 13, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll learn about new Vonage-compatible products that let you record Vonage calls- including Vonage softphone calls- on Mac OS X. From there, its to this Vonage Forum thread about a specific router and whether it works OK with Vonage, and then a thread about a router-related connectivity issue. And we'll check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Arcosoft announces the release of VONaLink SoloRecord for Mac OS X. SoloRecord works with any Voip phone system based on the open SIP standard, such as Vonage, to record phone calls and to provide screen pops. Also available is a separate ScreenPop product, if recording is not required. SoloRecord and ScreenPop were previously available only for Windows.

With traditional phone systems, calls are recorded with either analog equipment or expensive, proprietary products from the phone company. With the latest Voip systems built on open, standard protocols, calls can be recorded by monitoring network packets. Call recording benefits a company by allowing business transactions over the phone to be verified and disputes resolved.

VONaLink SoloRecord works with any SIP based Voip system, such as Vonage. Soft phone, hard phone, or analog phone via an adapter are supported. The call is recorded as a stereo WAV or MP3. An inaudible watermark can be added to the recording for later verification that the file has not been changed.

Using the caller ID of the incoming call, SoloRecord searches for the caller in the Address Book, or launches custom applications to search the web or company database. If the caller is found, the information is popped on the screen, thereby increasing the productivity of the user.

Unwanted callers can be added to the reject list. Integration with Vonage Click2Call allows outbound calls to be placed by clicking in the call log within the VONaLink application.

SoloRecord and ScreenPop run on Mac OS X 10.3 and later. Prices are $99 USD for SoloRecord, and $29 USD for ScreenPop. Evaluation downloads are available from

Sometimes, even veteran Vonage Forum Members ask questions. That's true with a new thread started by Vonage Forum Member taylor2767- who has 389 posts since he joined the Vonage Forum back in May, 2005.

And taylor2767's Vonage Forum thread is entitled Belkin n1 router.

"Any known compatibility issues with Vonage?" he asks about the router.

"The most common complaint with Belkin routers so far has been the firewall causing havoc with Vonage thinking that the constant data downstream is an attack and it tries to block it," answers mundy5, who is our Vonage Forum Member of the Week. "But if you give it priority etc., it should be fine."

RT31P2 behind DI-624 (FIOS)- cant get access network is a new Vonage Forum thread that Vonage Forum Member johnmacd has opened.

'Here's my setup:

DI-624----->a few computers
|-----> RT31P2 connected via internet jack," johnmacd writes.

Then he explains the issues at hand:

"The Vonage phone works fine and has been working fine for a long time," johnmacd writes. "Now I would like to connect another computer to the back to the RT31P2.

"I have tried several things," he continues. "I tried turning off DHCP on the RT31P2, tried both having the DI-624 connect to the Internet port and then tried connecting to port 1. At this point I'm not completely sure what I have tried and haven't tried."

"What I would like to do is to connect another computer to the back of the RT31P2 and connect to the net and my other computers on the network," he explains further. "Can anyone offer any help?"

Well, mundy5 can. Here's what our Vonage Forum Member of Week has written in response to johnmacd's thread-opening post:

"If I am understanding your post correctly, you are having trouble connecting to the network with the computers behind the DI-624 while this computer is connected behind the rt31p2," mundy5 writes. "I believe the main reason for this problem is b/c your DI-624 is working on a different subnet than you rt31p2. Your DI-624 should be while your rt31p2 is hence computers on these two separate subnets cannot communicate with each other easily. What you need to do is to give your rt31p2 a new ip address within the subnet.

And to that, mundy5 adds this:

"Then disable its DHCP so that your computer connected behind the rt31p2 gets its ip address from your DI-624. You can check to see that it is getting its ip address from your DI-624 by running ipconfig."

Our most frequent poster Steve48 comes on next: with suggestions in case mundy5's doesn't work.

"If that doesn't work, then you can try "bridge mode". Turn off DHCP in the RT31P2," Steve48 says.

"Then run a cable from the DI-624 to a LAN port on the RT31P2. Run another cable from a second LAN port on the RT31P2 to the WAN port on the RT31P2," he adds. "Connect your computer to the third LAN port on the RT31P2."

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
