Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 12, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Not much Vonage news this morning, so we'll go straight to this Vonage Forum thread about router setup, and then there's this thread I want to write about which concerns a buggy incoming call ringer.  And we'll check in on Vonage's stock price

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member Geoff2 began a thread over the weekend that he entitled, D-Link VWR connecting to my existing Motorola VT2442.

"I'm trying to link a D-Link VWR into my existing Motorola VT2442, the power light is stuck on 2 blinks so it can't get an IP address," Geoff2 writes. My daughter is setting up business, so it seemed a good idea for her to have a router she can take when she visits India - that way she can maintain her UK contacts, and she can plug her laptop in. It seemed like a good idea ... anyway.

"The Motorola connects to the NTL cable modem, I also have a Linksys which manages to connect to the Motorola with no problem, but the D-Link supplied by Vonage won't do it," Geoff2.

But then after consulting Vonage tech support, Geoff2 follows up with a post in which he adds, "apologies, Vonage has sorted out the problem - it was quite simple, both routers had the same default IP so they couldn't communicate.

"The D-Link now has 16.1, and works fine," Geoff2 points out.

New Vonage Forum Member ptr727 has a problem which he identifies in a new Vonage Forum thread he has started and calls Incoming call ringer "stutters".

"Occasionally when I get an incoming call the phone would ring, but the ringer would "stutter", i.e. it sounds like the ringing sound breaks up," he writes. "There is nothing wrong with the line quality when I do answer the call, i.e. audio quality is fine. Internet connection is RoadRunner Extreme (10Mb/1Mb) cable in (Southern California).

Next ptr727 tells us that his:
Cable modem is connected to a Netgear WPNT834 router/ap.
PAP2 is connected to the WPNT834 lan side.
PAP2 is connected to a Motorola 5.4GHz wireless phone base station.

"The call origin does not matter," he adds." It happens with landline, cellphone, and other VoIP/Skype callers, but it happens infrequently."

Several of ptr727's fellow Vonage Forum Members add their suggestions.

"Have you tried changing the handset to see if you'll get same result?," asks Alma_1916.

"Can you please check if you have a new voicemail in your account," writes 7thdevil.

Next is Vonage Forum Member DMS1.

"It sounds like, for whatever reason, the phone adapter cannot supply enough ring voltage to ring the phone," DMS1 writes. "What is the REN of the phone (it should be on the label on the bottom). If this is really high (which is unlikely) then that could be the problem.

"Otherwise, try a different phone," DMS1 adds. "If that has the same problem then it could well be a bad adapter.

"Whatever, this is purely a problem between your adapter and your phone," DMS1 declares. "It is totally unrelated to the Internet connection etc.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member xcrunxc is next up.

"This would never cause an incoming ring to stutter," xcrunxc adds. "The voicemail stutter tone would only be present when you actually pick up the phone and get a dialtone.

"I agree with the above posters that you should try a new telephone and phone cord," xcrunxc continues. "That would at least rule out the possibility of it being one of those two things. If the same problem occurs with a new phone your device may be intermittently not outputting enough ring voltage to create the correct ringtone.

"If that is the case, you may need to contact Vonage," he then points out. "Depending on the current settings on your device they may be able to up the ring voltage output by your device to see if that solves it.

"Also, you may want to try the other port on your phone adapter to see if the problem persists across both ports, it could just be a faulty port/connection," xcrunxc suggests. "You can change the port your number is on right from your web account.

"I had this same problem with the first PAP2 I got from Vonage," writes pilotboy72. "See if they can switch you to the other port on your device -- that cleared it up for me."

Our most frequent poster, Steve48, then adds: "You can now switch ports on line."

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
