Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

First, some good news. Early this morning, we registered out 36 millionth page view here on the Vonage Forums since we started here on March 5, 2003. Every time you click on a page, that's one more page view. So let's see how quickly we can get to 37 million!

In the news, we'll learn about a promotion Vonage is planning for Valentine's Day, which is this coming Wednesday.. Then we'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about connectivity problems with the VTech IP 8100-2, and then there's this thread I want to write about which concerns the RTP300.  And we'll check in on Vonage's stock price

Vonage Plans Valentine's Day Promotion: Key Blogger Loves It

Valentine's Day is this coming Wednesday, and Vonage is planning a special promotion for it.

Leading Voip blogger Rich Tehrani loves this idea.

"By dialing 1-700-Valentine, Vonage customers will be prompted to choose from a variety of love poems, along with the option to add their own 30 second personalized message, which will then be sent on Feb. 14," Rich writes. "Vonage customers can send this voicemail greeting to any phone number in the US or Canada, or have it emailed to their own account, where they can save it, download it or forward it to a loved one.

"This is pure marketing genius. Many readers will point out how simple such a service is and that it isn’t even worthy of being called an innovation. But this is not a technology innovation as much as a marketing innovation," Rich points out. "Then again Vonage became as successful as it is today due to its marketing, not its technology. Sure they have developed innovative technology as well but their marketing has made it very difficult for other Voip providers to compete effectively with the New Jersey-based IP communications leader.

"If I was a Vonage customer I would use this service. Is 700-Valentine something that will make me switch to Vonage? Probably not, but it would make me think twice if I ever had a reason to cancel my Vonage service," adds Rich. "It shows the company cares about its customers and is giving back."

Rich likes what promotions such as these say about Vonage.

"In my opinion, as long as Vonage continues to come up with new features like this and markets them to existing customers, they will certainly cause a case of Vonage-envy among everyone else," Rich writes. "It is also great to see new applications being developed and marketed by an IP communications company. Vonage was one of the companies responsible for educating North America and other parts of the world about how Voip can be cheaper. They are now showing the world how Voip can also be better."

 

On The Vonage Voip Forum

In a new Vonage Forum thread entitled Connectivity issues with VTech IP 8100-2, new Vonage Forum Member nsbhp2 describes what's going on.

"First time user here with a perplexing issue," nhbhp2 writes. "I just recently signed up w/Vonage, and have my phones hooked up through the D-Link VTA-VD box, and all works well. 

"Yesterday I bought the VTech IP 8100-2 system and tried hooking it up to my Belkin Wireless G router with no success (I unplugged the D-Link box before trying the set-up)," he adds. "Now, I did do the stupid thing of turning on one of the phones while the set-up process was going on (does it REALLY hurt anything??), and now the only light on the front of the base is the solid yellow on the READY status." 

Next, an admission:

"I've tried doing a hard reset on the base, tried plugging it in to a different port on the router, neither had any effect," nhbhp2 explains further. "Is there a subtle trick I'm missing here? Any help would be greatly appreciated!"

"To start, did you register the IP8100 with your Vonage account?," replies fellow Vonage Forum Member xcrunxc. " If you have not, this is what you need to do. Go here: http://vonage.com/retail_subscribe/ and select current customer login and register your device by filling in the requested info."

"Cool! Ok, went and did that, now my VTA box is not showing Line 1 as active, but I'm still showing a yellow READY light on the IP 8100-2 box," writes nsbhp2, whose real first name is Scott.

And just a few minutes after making that post, nsbhp2 follows up with a note of success.

"OK, I powered down for 30 seconds, and rebooted, and I have a GREEN ready now," nsbhp2 writes. "Thanks so much for your help xcrunxc!"

Very often, the threads on the Vonage Canada section of the Vonage Forums contain issues relevant to Vonage users no matter where they live. Such a thread is Vonage Forum Member atarjeff's thread that he has entitled Linksys PAP2 keeps renewing IP.

"I received a notice from my ISP today telling me that a device I'm using is requesting too many DHCP renew's," he writes. "Looking a snippet of the log they sent me it looks like my PAP2 requests to renew my IP, gets a response, and then immediately requests again."

Next, and in the same post, atarjeff includes the details of his renew's. After providing that information, he adds, "I've munged the MAC and IP's. What would cause this?"

But then atarjeff follows with a clarification.

"OK an update. It's actually an RTP300 (they look the same). Vonage customer support tells me my firmware is too new and has 'issues' so I'm getting downgraded," he writes.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member irreality follows up with a post containing some comments.

"Good to see that you found a solution..... but I'm just going to speak from experience.... anyone with a pap2 <---- get something else," irreality writes. "The pap2 may be small portable etc etc... but all that ain't worth crap unless the thing works. 

"I had 2 of these adapters and neither worked properly," irreality points out next.. "I'm on a Mac and every time i connected to MSN my PAP2 would lose phone service- the solution get the RTP300 - mucho better. and other than the color the RTP300 and the PAP2 look nothing alike. the RTP is like 3 times the size of the PAP2

Vonage Stock Report

On Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $5.81 a share, which was a rise of 4 cents (+0.69%) from Wednesday's closing price of $5.77 a share, but then again it was 13 cents higher than the day's lowest price for Vonage stock, and that was $5.68 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Thursday came out to be  393,300 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75
