Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 8, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll learn of a key application a leading technology consultancy and research firm envisions for Vonage this year. Then we'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about a specific kind of Vonage set-up, and then another thread about a TiVo-related issue. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Consultancy Predicts Vonage To Be Part Of Key Trend This Year

In its list of its top 10 SMB (Small and Medium Business) Trends for 2007, leading technical research firm and consultancy AMI-Partners sees a role for Vonage. "Adoption of broadband Voip applications such as Skype, Yahoo and Vonage will grow rapidly, especially among small SBs (1-4 employees)," the consultancy writes on its website.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

In a new Vonage Forum thread called Multiple users, timers, and passwords, Vonage Forum Member mskirtland asks:

"Is there any way to require that a password or PIN be entered at the handset in order to make/receive calls?," he writes. "I am trying to control my son's telephone access. I want to set up different usage rules for him than for my wife and me. The idea is that we each would need to punch in a PIN in order to answer or place calls."

And then mskirtland, who started this thread, gets a quick response from fellow Vonage Forum Member mundy5.

"That would be the job of the type of phone system you get," writes mundy5.V"onage has no means to do that for you other than to help you track the usage of the phone in general.

And to that, mundy5 adds that he suspects that mskirtland would need something more like a PBX system that will require PINs to be typed before making calls.

Hey let's go to the Vonage Fax - TiVo - Alarms section of our Vonage Forum- a section that just the other day got its 3,500th post- and review an interesting thread entitled, TiVo via Wireless Adapter- "DHCP Server Could Not be Lo(cated). This thread is started by Vonage Forum Member nal001, whose first name is Nina.

Keep in mind that TiVo questions are relevant to Vonage service because for TiVo to work right, it needs to call in automatically each day to the TiVo programs database to update its program listings. And with a Vonage connection, it would need to be able to do so over a Vonage line.

OK, now to the thread.

"I've had TiVo since it first came out. My current TiVo's are Series 2's and have been connected through a wireless adapter for a couple of years now.," nal001 writes.

"Then, last night I installed Vonage. Setting up TiVo to connect view the new D-Link router," she adds, "I get the error message that a DHCP server could not be located on the network.

"Although, it wasn't a security-related error, I tried turning off WEP security," na1001 adds. "Didn't help. Tried manually entering the server address into TiVo. Still getting the error.

"Any ideas," na1001 asks of her fellow Vonage Forum Members. "It's getting pretty frustrating - until now it's been a piece of cake to connect TiVo to wireless networks."

A couple of days later, na1001 comes back with a resolution to the issues she asked about in her post that opened this thread.

"I'm not thrilled with the solution, but purchasing a TiVo brand wireless adapter resolved the issue," she writes. "Never did figure out why the Netgear adapter that I'd been using with the TiVo's couldn't connected after the D-Link router from Vonage was installed.

"It's not a great solution," na1001 admits, "but, I'm posting in case someone else becomes as frustrated as I was."

Thanks for doing that, na1001.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Tuesday morning for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
