Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll go over an article in which cost savings possible through Vonage plans are spotlighted. Then we'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about quality connection issues,  one about a specific set-up issue with the Vonage-compatible F-1000 UT Starcom Wi-Fi phone We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

ABC News Website Spotlights Vonage Call Savings

The ABC-TV News website Elisabeth Leamy has done some research about Vonage and other phone pricing that she has incorporated into a new article entitled "Callers Find Savings With Internet Phones."

"The number of people who turned in their regular phones for Internet phones more than doubled last year," she writes. "Nine percent of U.S. homes now have a Web phone.

"That means the vast majority of Americans have not yet taken advantage of this new technology and the serious savings that come with it," she explains. "There are two ways to talk over the Internet: with a converter box that turns your regular home telephone into a Web phone, or by talking over the computer by using the built-in speaker or plugging in a headset.

Then, she gets down to explaining the cost advantages of Vonage.

"New Yorker Ian Warren uses the Web phone company Vonage," she writes. "For $14.99 a month, he gets 500 minutes to keep in touch with family and friends all over the world."

"I think it's about $600 a year that I'm saving by using Vonage over a landline phone," Warren said.

Next, Leamy writes that "ABC News shopped around and found a traditional phone company charging $43 a month for unlimited local and long distance, plus typical extras like call waiting. A similar service from a cable company was advertised at $85 and up because you have to purchase premium TV channels to get the phone service."

Then without mentioning Vonage specifically, she writes that the leading company offering Internet calling charges $25 a month for unlimited calling. "That's on top of whatever you pay for your high speed Internet connection."


On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member randyperry hasn't been pleased with the quality of his Vonage calls. Because of this, he has decided to seek advice by opening a new Vonage Forum thread that he has named, Having some serious quality/ connection issues...

"I'm experiencing serious broken calls more and more frequently with 2-3 second lapses," writes randyperry, who makes sure to add his Vonage test results and Vonage Speed test results to his post.

"I believe I'm experiencing broken calls; lapses from the Voip user end in which you do not hear them speaking all of a sudden for 2- 3 second intervals," randyperry writes after he posts these results. He adds that he's also hearing a series of beeps initiated from his VoIP phone intermittently.

Randy's thoroughness in terms of adding all that information gives our most frequent poster, Steve48, enough info to go on for him to write a follow-up post with some suggestions.

"Your test results are just awful," Steve48 writes. "Plug a wired computer directly into your modem and re-run the test. 

"If you get similar results, then you can conclude that it's the modem or the Internet service," Steve48 adds. "If you get dramatic improvement, then it's in your Vonage box or wireless router. Given the problems with your phone, the Vonage box would be the likely culprit in that case."

New Vonage Forum Member schatham needs some specific help with a Vonage set-up issue. His request is for a possible bug in the set-up of his Vonage-compatible F-1000 UT Starcom Wi-Fi phone. Needing this help, schatham has started a new Vonage Forum thread that he's named, new set-up help.

"Ordered Vonage F1000, just got it and charged it, sees my router and my neighbors. but wont register to network," schatham writes. "When I turn it on sees my router and says registering via (name of router) but thats as far as it will get. 

"Is it possible Vonage never registered my phone serial # so it won't register," he asks. "I have comcast (and my) neighbor has Verizon DSL. Same result on both. Any ideas?".

Here comes Steve48 again. And he has "ideas."

"It is possible that Vonage neglected to register it," Steve48 writes. "You should be able to check on line in your account, and register it if necessary."

What Info To Post When You Are Having Tech Problems

In the thread we just reviewed called Having some serious quality/ connection issues..., Vonage Forum Member randyperry was able to get help for his issue after he posted the results of his Vonage test results. In doing so, he followed the advice listed in the What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage.... sticky post at the top of this Forum. Because we've picked up so many new Forum Members since we last pointed to this Feature in the Digest, I thought that today would be a good opportunity to review this Sticky again.

A good number of threads and posts on the Vonage Forum are devoted to a technical issue a Forum Member is having with their Vonage service, and questions as to what is causing the problem and how it can be fixed. Being able to provide such solutions is a major reason why we are here.

We have many knowledgeable Vonage Forum members who repeatedly have jumped in and provided advice that has led to solutions. Generally, the best way for them to help you is if you provide as much information as you can about your setup and the nature of the problem you are having.

"Awhile back, one of those knowledgeable and always Vonage Forum Members actually started a thread advising what info you should provide when you start a thread that asks for help with a Vonage-related issue. Trowski's thread is called What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage..... I liked his points so much that I have made this thread a "sticky," which means it appears at the top of the Vonage Voip Forum thread list you see when you go to

Here's what Trowski advises that you post:

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and model
5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from with a test call to Boston.

"This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....," he writes.

And to that I added, "that a detailed title is very important, one that does not have the words: "Please", "Help" or "Vonage" in it. And if you haven't already done so, please take a minute to read the forum rules prior to posting for the first time."

Vonage Stock Report

On Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $5.71 a share, which was a rise of 19 cents (3.44%) from Monday's closing price of $5.52 a share, but then again it was 26 cents higher than the day's lowest price for Vonage stock, and that was $5.45 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Tuesday resulted in 1,139,700 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test
