Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 5, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll learn about the availability of a Vonage-compatible adapter-router in Canada. Then we'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about Vonage equipment rebates, and then there's another thread we'll cover about routers and bridge mode. Today is Monday, when we meet our new Vonage Forum Member of the Week. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

VT2142 Adapter-Router Now Available In Canada

Motorola Canada has announced the availability of its latest Vonage phone adapter and router, the VT2142.

The adapter comes configured with Vonage phone service, and can connect up to two Vonage lines through a high-speed connection. The Motorola VT2142 also includes a networking router.

"Vonage is constantly striving to help provide consumers with innovative quality products for their telephone needs," says Bruce Robertson, Director, Product and Market Development, Vonage Canada . “In addition to taking advantage of Vonage's flat rate monthly phone plans, with the Motorola VT2142 phone adapter and router, customers will be able to download and share computer files, videos or MP3s fast and easy.”

"The continued expansion of Vonage's product offerings is a testament to the growing popularity of alternative phone services," added Kevin Keefe, Vice President, Voice and Data Solutions, Motorola Inc.

In Canada, The Motorola VT2142 is currently available for free after an $89.99 (Canadian) instant rebate.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

While I know that rebates on Vonage equipment are a key motivator for some folks to sign up for Vonage service, the terms of these rebates are not always crystal clear. I guess that's a reason why new Vonage Forum Member sproc decided to start a new Vonage Forum thread and give it the title, Activating retail device without messing up rebate.

"Apparently I fail at legalese," writes sproc. "Hey sproc, you aren't the only one."

"Today I purchased a telephone adapter (D-Link VTA-VR) for $40 from my local CompUSA because they $140 in rebates (so free plus an extra $100 back)," he writes. "However, the rebate form is quite vague as to how I need to activate without voiding the rebate.

"It says I must activate Vonage with 15 days. Easy enough. I assumed I'd go to, click the Activate Your Store-Bought Device button, and then use my new Vonage account number on the CompUSA rebate," sproc adds.

"But, then I notice the rebate form says "Purchases made at are not eligible." Well, I purchased the device at CompUSA and was going to simply Activate it at Or does that count as purchasing the service at," he asks.

"Calling Vonage was no help ("it's not our offer so we don't know"), which makes sense," sproc points out. "But the people at CompUSA didn't know either. Swell.

Now for the meat of sproc's question:

"So, do I need to drive all the way back to CompUSA to activate this thing (or worse, return it and re-buy it so they're both on the same receipt), or can I just activate at and still get the CompUSA rebate?," he writes. "It seems like the rebate would have said "you must activate at the store" if that really was a requirement, but it's not like they'd be sad if your rebate was invalid. I really don't want to mess this up since by the time I get a rejection from the rebate dept., it'll be way too late to sign up the right way."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member Darrell_G has the answer for sproc.

"You have to activate the Vonage service within 15 days of your purchase of the D-Link VTA-VR from CompUSA to receive your rebate," writes Darrell_G, who then tells sproc to "go to, click the "Bought Vonage at a Store" Go button select "I bought my Vonage device at retail and want to activate a new account" and continue from there. Follow the remaining directions and you should be OK.

"You did NOT make the purchase at, you made the purchase at CompUSA," Darrell_G emphasizes. "You do NOT need to return anything back to CompUSA...just simply activate the device at within 15 days of the purchase, mail your rebate forms accordingly and you should receive your rebate.

New Vonage Forum Member 7thdevil has established a Vonage Forum thread with a title that contains what he wants to know: how can I switch my modem/router into bridge mode??

"I'm having some problems installing my new device with a different set-up," he writes. "I want to test if i can use my modem/router and run my Vonage device vt2442. A technician told me that i need to set my modem router Westell 6100 into bridge mode. "Can you give an emulator for that! thanks!"

Fellow Vonage Forum Member Pepperoni offers the answer.

"It is usually done through your browser, to access the router setup utility," he writes. "Check your router instructions for the proper address to reach the setup, each brand of router has a unique address. I cannot tell you which setup page, as I am unfamiliar with your router, and they vary widely.

"It should be a simple check-switch (router/bridge)," Pepperoni clarifies. "The manufacturer site probably has the manual in PDF format."

Meet Our New Vonage Forum Member Of the Week

As you can see in that last post, Vonage Forum Member Pepperoni is offering helpful tips these days. In fact, the collection of helpful posts Pepperoni has made this past week- and over this year so far- has now lifted him to the level of a 150-post Vonage Forum Member. That sounds like some good Vonage Forum Member of the Week credentials. So let us give Pepperoni his first-ever Vonage Forum Member of the Week nod. And I should point out that we have a Vonage Canada Forum as part of the Vonage Forums. And it is not only for Canadians.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Tuesday morning for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
