Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 2, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll learn about an event Vonage is co-sponsoring during Super Bowl weekend. That's this weekend. Then we'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about disrupted Vonage service issues, as well as a thread seeking equipment recommendations. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Super Bowl Party is Tomorrow Night

Sunday is the Super Bowl- the National Football League championship game that is sure to draw large television audiences throughout North America. And I am sure that Vonage users will be communicating with each other before, during and after the game.

But on Saturday night, Vonage will be a co-sponsor of Playboy magazine's "P.M.: Playboy Miami After Dark" will be held at the American Airlines Arena in Miami- about 15 miles from the site of the game the following evening.

No, it is not exactly what you might be thinking. According to Playboy:

For the sixth consecutive year, the evening will feature a silent auction to raise money for charity. Two organizations will benefit from this year's auction, sponsored by Athletes Helping Kids, a charity that funds programs with a direct impact on the well-being of our country's youth and focuses on the importance of education and substance abuse awareness; and A Touch of Braille, Inc., an organization that promotes the role of communication skills, especially knowledge of Braille, in increasing the independence and the successful employment potential of people who are blind or visually impaired. Items for this year's auction include tickets to Hugh Hefner's Midsummer Night's Dream Party at the Playboy Mansion, a spectacular array of autographed sports memorabilia from various superstars, tickets to the 2007 Florida State v. Florida game, and much more.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Well, I guess new Vonage Forum Member mejoyce is not prone to "rejoice" about the issues he describes in the new Vonage Forum thread he has started and is calling, Service loss AND digital display disruption.

"I have no dial tone, but no problems with Internet," he writes. "This has happened twice today - it was fixed once already, but it's happened again."

Then after including his setup, mejoyce adds, "Also, first one and now both of my phone handsets have no digital displays. This has corresponded with outages - is it possible that because I didn't buy a phone from Vonage that the system has shorted out the displays? Now I have no Caller ID or phonebook."

At this point, Steve48- our most frequent poster- sees an opportunity to offer his expertise by joining this thread with some advice.

"No, the Vonage equipment doesn't much care what kind of phone you use. Exception: If the phone is a two line phone, then there are issues with the D-link VTA, and there are potential issues using the VTA with home wiring," Steve48 writes. "Do you have more than one active line on your house wiring, Vonage or otherwise?"

Then Steve48 gets down to specifics for mejoyce.

"It really sounds as if the phone itself may have gone bad," he writes. Start by disconnecting from the house wiring and plugging the phone directly into the VTA.

"If that doesn't work," adds Steve48, "try to get hold of a simple analog phone and see if that works when plugged directly into the VTA."

Now it is mejoyce's turn to respond.

"Nope, we only have one phone line. Vonage has moved my port 1 settings to port 2, but that still hasn't fixed the problem," writes mejoyce. "And now I realize that no, my phone isn't hooked up to the house, it's plugged directly into the Vonage adapter.

"Any other suggestions?," mejoyce asks. "They don't seem to be able to fix this, and our cell reception in our house is awful, which means I have to go outside (in Chicago in winter) to get a decent signal."

Your turn, Steve48.

"Have you tried a different phone? It really sounds like a non-Vonage related telephone failure," Steve48 writes. "I can't imagine how the Vonage adapter could have caused the phone display to go awry."

At that point, mejoyce follows up with another post.

"Thanks - the phone is working again, but the display is lost for good, I fear," mejoyce writes. "They are two separate problems, but it just seemed too coincidental that when each display went dead, it was during a Vonage outage."

Then mejoyce ends with an idea.

"Even though it's a pretty new phone (less than a year old), I'm going to see if a battery replacement will help," mejoyce writes. Wouldn't that just be the kicker???

"Thanks for your help," mejoyce tells Steve48. "Hopefully I won't have another service outage again soon."

We sometimes get threads seeking advice on upgrading equipment that a Vonage Forum Member is using with their Vonage service. Such a thread is Motorola VT2442 - Is it worth upgrading to?.

In starting this thread, new Vonage Forum Member JJaskolski writes:

"I have had Vonage for about 2 years now and have been using the Linksys RT31P2. I have noticed some quality issues and was wondering if the new Motorola VT2442 has any improvements over the Linksys."

The first response to this post comes from another new Vonage Forum Member- jwenger.

"I had a Motorola 1005 so I don't have experience with linksys device," jwenger writes. "But I had terrible phone service with my 1005 plugged in behind my router. When I moved it in front of my router plugged directly into my cable modem, it worked better but would crash under heavy use and required frequent reboots.

"I upgraded to the VT2442 this week and everything works much better now," he specifically mentions. With the exception that I can no longer browse web sites by name on my Web server from my lan clients. It gives me the router logon screen instead of the web sites."

Based on those criteria, jwenger writes that "other than that the VT2442 is probably the best device going." Still, he mentions that he has some errors in his status logs but they are very cryptic and he can't figure out if they are important or not.

Next is fellow Vonage Forum Member Pepperoni.

"I have a new VT2142, which is essentially the same ; the 2442 merely has more switch ports," he writes. "No problems, excellent voice quality and works well in front of a Belkin wireless router.

"These devices are an improvement over the older issued devices and I would not hesitate to recommend either," Pepperoni adds.

Vonage Stock Report

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Because we get new Vonage Forum Members here all the time, I'll call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Monday morning for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
