Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 31, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll find out about a major new announcement as to where Vonage service and equipment will be sold in Canada.  We'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about ATAs (Analog Terminal Adapters) and the possibility they could be going bad), as well as a Vonage Forum thread which is about getting Vonage to work over a Virtual Private Network.  We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Phone Service To Be Sold In Canada Wal-Mart Stores

Vonage says that more than 100 Wal-Mart stores across the country will now offer Vonage phone service. Vonage is the first Internet phone service to be sold in Canadian Wal-Mart stores.

The Wal-Mart announcement comes at a time when more and more consumers are considering switching their home service provider. A national survey conducted by Angus Reid and commissioned by Vonage Canada, revealed that 28 per cent of Canadians say they are likely to switch their home phone service provider in the next 12 months. At the same time, more retailers have begun offering Internet phone service in their stores.

"With one of the country's most popular retailers now offering Vonage phone service, it's clear that Voip (Voice Over Internet Protocol) is moving beyond early adopters towards the mass market," said Joe Parent, vice-president of marketing and business development, Vonage Canada. "The agreement between Vonage Canada and Wal-Mart brings together two industry leaders to further build credibility for Internet phone service."

Wal-Mart is the first major non-consumer electronics retailer to offer Vonage phone service in its stores. Wal-Mart joins such consumer electronics retailers as Best Buy, Future Shop, The Source by Circuit City, Staples Business Depot and others to offer Vonage phone service.

Vonage says that when combined with its existing retail channel, Vonage is now available at approximately 1,300 retail outlets across Canada, giving it the widest retail distribution of any third-party Internet phone service provider

 On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum User VonageNJ has started a new Vonage Forum thread in which he asks, Do ATAs go bad?

"I have 2 Vonage adapters. An older Motorola VT1005V and a newer one, which is also a router I have 4 Vonage lines in separate parts of the house/office which is why I have 2 adapters," he writes. "Lately, the Motorola vt1005a seems to be losing the connection to Vonage (the green lights blinks).

"If I unplug the device and then plug it back in, all is well," VonageNJ points out. "Do the ATAs go bad? Or could it be another issue?"

"They do go bad, but there can always be other issues," writes Steve48.

"How often does this happen?," he asks. "If unplugging it and then plugging it back in fixes the problem, it could be a heating issue. Is it in a location with good ventilation?"

Next, VonageNJ writes a follow-up post answering Steve48's question.

I called tech support today- the had me do a soft reset - we will see how that goes," VonageNJ writes. "It happened 3 times last week and also this morning The spot it is in is fine. Its been in the same spot for 3 years."

At this juncture, fellow Vonage Forum Member che joins this thread by raising a very valid point.

"Yes they can go bad," che writes. "A lot of factors may contribute to its malfunctionality.

"If it ATA is already becoming a liability to you, better change it," che advises.

Now here's a new Vonage Forum thread about a specific setup- in this case about a Virtual Private Network.

"When I try to VPN to work, I can not get a connection unless I disconnect the IP8100-2 from the network," writes Vonage Forum Member timodee in a thread he has started and has decided to name, VPN to work with Nortel Client Fails

"It just hangs," timodee explains. "I disconnect and it connects right away. I tried moving the ip8100 before the router, same result. Any where I can look and learn or suggestions?

At this point, scerruti, who is one of our more frequent posting Vonage Forum Members, provides some tips.

"Searching through past posts leads me to believe there might be a conflict on port 10000," he writes. "You may want to try specifically forwarding port 10000 in your router to your PC and see if that helps and if your IP8100 still works."

That announcement about Vonage now being available for sale in Wal-Mart Canada stores gave me the idea of writing about our Vonage Canada Forum.

This Vonage Forum section offers a handy list of threads about Vonage service and equipment in Canada. Yet although this section is of primary interest to Vonage's Canada customers, many of the threads you will find here are about equipment, set-up and other topics of interest to any Vonage user. Just click on a thread and it will open.

The Vonage Canada Forum has more than 3,500 posts and is closing in on 600 topics. Even if you are not from Canada, I'd bet you'll find some interesting tips there. Here's the direct link to the Vonage Canada Forum.

Vonage Stock Report

On Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $5.87 a share, which was a dip of 10 cents  from Monday's closing price of $5.97 a share, but then again it was two cents higher than the day's lowest price for Vonage stock, and that was $5.85 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Tuesday were added up as being 374,000 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that rt31p2 some calls not coming thru - which was one of the two Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today- featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow morning for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
