Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 29, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Not too much new Vonage news today, so we'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about Vonage caller ID and another thread about dial tone issues. Today is Monday, when we introduce our Vonage Forum Member of the Week. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

A topic of frequent interest to Vonage Forum Members is raised in the new Vonage Forum thread that Vonage Forum Member myork29 has opened and entitled Block Caller ID for ALL CALLS.

"Is there a way to block caller id (outgoing) on ALL CALLS without pressing *67 each time?," myork29 asks.

"Vonage can (and will) enable this feature if you call and ask them," fellow Vonage Forum Member canuck_ replies. "You may have to be persistent, however. You may even have to call them again and again until you speak with someone that is willing (or qualified) to assist with your request.

"Once outgoing CID block is enabled on your line," canuck adds, "you would dial *82 before the number if you wish for your number to show up on CID on a per-call basis."

Over the weekend, new Vonage Forum Member TheWkndr was dealing with issues he's posed in the Vonage Forum thread he has opened and calls, Get dial tone but no outbound calls connect - inbound OK.

"New post - using service for 7 weeks, 5 of which we have not been able to make an outbound call," he writes. "We get a dial tone, but when we dial we get nothing - no busy signal, no beeping, just silence. On the website it doesn't show a call has been made. Through all this our internet connection has been fine. My wife has a home office and I would have heard about it if it was down.

"Spoke with (Vonage's tech) support two weeks ago while following their instructions on putting a static IP on the PAP2 and putting that IP in the DMZ on my router," TheWkndr adds. "Worked for two days. Called back again and was put on hold for five minutes. Tech came back and said he 'did something on their end' and to try it. It worked for several calls with him on the phone, then two days later we're back to nothing."

Then, after TheWkndr adds his Vonage test results, Steve48 writes:

"Your test results look fine. I would suggest that you do one thing before calling. Temporarily remove the WRV54G and plug the PAP2 directly into your modem. See if that allows you to dial out. If it does, put the WRV back in, check its setup carefully, and disable any firewall that it's running."

Based on what Steve48 wrote, TheWkndr re-contacted Vonage tech support and performed some actions. Those processes lead TheWkndr into a follow-up post in which he wrote:

"That's next - I just really don't want to do that as our permanent pc is a old PIII 700 that I had to completely reload after trying to run Norton Firewall on it. Disabling our firewall would leave us totally vulnerable.

"After an hour on the phone with level II support," TheWkndr writes, "they ran the speed test and I got another ' we did something on our end' then we could magically make calls again. We'll see how long that lasts."

All this leads TheWkndr to ask a final question:

"Do you all periodically reboot your equipment?" TheWkndr writes. "Like once a week or so? We've been using the same hardware and setup for a year and it never required any type of reboot or reset up until we started our Vonage adventure."

It is at this point that Vonage Forum Member mundy5 joins the thread.

"When Steve was talking about disabling the firewall he meant in your wrv56g not in your pIII," mundy5 writes. "Regardless, I do not reboot anything unless I change a config either on my router or my wireless AP. I usually have to reboot after a power outage or an internet outage etc."

It's Monday-and Mundy5

It's both time and day to meet our new Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

As you just saw in that last thread entitled Get dial tone but no outbound calls connect - inbound OK, mundy5 has been very active on the Vonage Forum this week with advice. Actually he is that most weeks, so this is as good if not better a week than any to name mundy5 our Vonage Forum Member of the Week. We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The thread we reviewed earlier in this edition entitled Get dial tone but no outbound calls connect - inbound OK, featured results from our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
