Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 24, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll learn about a really big party Vonage is co-sponsoring. We'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about a router issue involved with the Vonage service, and also there's this thread about an interesting Vonage billing question. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage To Co-Sponsor Party On Eve Of Super Bowl

Vonage will be a co-sponsor of Playboy magazine's "P.M.: Playboy Miami After Dark" will be held at the American Airlines Arena on Saturday, February 3, 2007 on the eve of the Super Bowl.

No, it is not exactly what you might be thinking. According to Playboy:

For the sixth consecutive year, the evening will feature a silent auction to raise money for charity. Two organizations will benefit from this year's auction, sponsored by Athletes Helping Kids, a charity that funds programs with a direct impact on the well-being of our country's youth and focuses on the importance of education and substance abuse awareness; and A Touch of Braille, Inc., an organization that promotes the role of communication skills, especially knowledge of Braille, in increasing the independence and the successful employment potential of people who are blind or visually impaired. Items for this year's auction include tickets to Hugh Hefner's Midsummer Night's Dream Party at the Playboy Mansion, a spectacular array of autographed sports memorabilia from various superstars, tickets to the 2007 Florida State v. Florida game, and much more.

Hey, wish I could be there!

On The Vonage Voip Forum

In a new Vonage Forum thread entitled Static with WRTP54G, Vonage Forum Member grogol describes his issues like this:

"I have had Vonage service for a little over a year. I have a Motorola Cable Modem (5120) and a Vonage Linksys WRTP54G wireless router.

The WRTP54G has given me problems all along, requiring me to reboot it every day or two to keep the voice quality acceptable.

In the past couple of weeks, however, I have had a problem with very bad static on my Vonage service. I happened to notice that the one PC I have attached to the WRTP54G will alternatingly show a window saying the network is connected, then will show a window saying a network cable is unplugged. When the "network cable is unplugged" message is showing, there is very bad static on the Vonage voice service. After much troubleshooting, Vonage technical support finally said the router is defective.

I have seen on this forum that there appears to be many issues with the WRT54G router and with combined wireless routers/phone adapter units in general.

My question is: Would the best solution be to get a Vonage phone adapter and a separate wireless router to have PC Internet connectivity and Vonage service, rather than a new wireless router/phone adapter combo? If so, what equipment would work the best together?"

Then grogol gets an answer from Steve48.

"I think you've got the right idea. The experts seem to like the WRT54GL (not the same as the combo WRTP54G) for the router," Steve48 writes. "Do a search on the forum, particularly for the writings of member NateHoy.

"For the separate phone adapter," Steve48 adds, "any of the Vonage supplied devices would be fine- the D-link VTA for example."

Now here's a thread with a deceptively simple subject, but one which, when you think about it, is kind of important. The thread is entitled, billing question - no place to put middle initial.

"I closed the account for my old credit card, so I need to update my card info on file with Vonage," writes Vonage Forum member mhair, who started this thread. "The new card has my middle initial on it, but there is no designated place to enter a middle initial on Vonage's form. It just has a field for "First Name on Credit Card" and one for "Last Name on Credit Card".

"So do I append my middle initial to the first name field? Or should I just omit the middle initial?," mhair asks. "Tried emailing customer service already, and their response didn't even remotely address my question. So I come here."

Well it looks like you've come to the right place, mhair. I can say that because I see that fellow Vonage Forum Member che has responded to your question by writing that you could append your middle initial to your first name, and Vonage will recognize that.

Vonage Stock Report

On Monday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $5.85 a share, which was a decline of 11 cents from Friday's closing price of $5.96 a share but then again it was a four cent climb from the session's lowest Vonage price and that was $5.81 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Monday reached 1,304,600 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow morning for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
