Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 23, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll learn more about Vonage V-Access. We'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about using Vonage with DSL, as well as a Vonage Forum thread which is about some Vonage calls not coming through. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Kicks Off V-Access

We had an item about this last week here on the Digest, but the official announcement has just been made.

Vonage subscribers with "home away from home" needs or who have friends and family around the world, have a new, more affordable way to stay in touch thanks to Vonage's new V- Access. This service is currently available in the United States, Canada, France, Italy, Mexico, Spain, and the UK.

V-Access provides an access number to make calls to any Vonage phone number (or an 800-number) without paying long distance or international fees. With V-Access, callers do not need to have a Vonage line to call a Vonage number (or an 800-number) for the price of a local call. The feature is available to anyone.

"We wanted to make sure that every Vonage customer and their loved ones can enjoy the savings of Vonage wherever they go," says Vonage CEO Mike Snyder.  "Once again, we are proving that Vonage goes above and beyond the traditional phone carriers by offering our customers and their families another great, inexpensive way to stay in touch while on overseas business trips, study abroad programs or just vacation."

Vonage subscribers (or anyone else) can take advantage of V-Access by visiting the "Features" section at and clicking "V-Access." With a couple of clicks in the "Find an Access Number" box, anyone can obtain an available access number that will enable them to avoid long distance and international calling charges. Then make a call with a V-Access number by following these steps:

1. Dial the Local access number.
2. Dial the Vonage phone number or 800-number.
3. The call is connected without incurring long distance or international.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member cher76 has just begun a thread that he calls, anyone use DSL with Vonage?

"When I switched to Vonage i had my internet cut off by accident," cher76 writes." I did not know that the DSL had to be with the phone company, my fault. Now i have my old number switched to Vonage.

"I have my landline turned back on and it has a new number," informs us. "How do i hook up Vonage to my DSL and have only my Vonage number ring. I need help on the hookup process."

Answering is Steve48, our current Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

"Plug the DSL line into your DSL modem, but don't plug any phone into that line," Steve48 tells cher76. "Plug your Vonage box into the ethernet port on the modem, and plug your phone into the Vonage box phone port.

"The DSL line won't ring because there won't be any phone plugged into it," points out Steve48.

Then cher76 follows up with a post thanking Steve48. That's always a great idea.

Now here's a thread about a subject we see from time to time. This thread is entitled rt31p2 some calls not coming thru and has been launched by Vonage Forum Member eman48451.

"I am using an rt31p2 Vonage router behind a befcmu10 cable modem, hooked up to 3 meg Charter Cable," writes eman48451. "Many people are telling me that some of their calls are not going through and will get a "trouble with call" recording. Also, people are having trouble hearing us at times, I have no trouble hearing them.

"This leads to assume that this maybe an upload problem," he explains.

Before finishing his post, eman48451 conducts and then adds the results of his Voip speed test.

Based on that information eman48451 provided,  Steve48 feels he has enough facts at hand to provide a diagnosis.

"It's interesting to note that the packet loss from you to server is high on the test using just the modem and lower with the Vonage box in place (good troubleshooting technique, by the way)," points out Steve48. "If anything, you would expect it to be the other way around.

And as for Steve48's conclusion?

"My conclusion from that is that you have an ISP issue, with service varying from time to time," he writes. "That would explain the fact that some calls are going through and some aren't."

Vonage Stock Report

On Monday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $5.96 a share, which was a dip of 10 cents (-1.65%) from Thursday's closing price of $6.06 a share, but then again it was three cents higher than the day's lowest price for Vonage stock, and that was $5.93 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Monday were added up as being 533,700 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that rt31p2 some calls not coming thru - which was one of the two Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today- featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow morning for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
