Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 22, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, I have announcements about two significant milestones for the Vonage Forum. Both of those milestones were reached over the weekend.

First, we now have more than 38,000 Members. That happened when new Vonage Forum Member bradford29 joined us. I see that bradford29 has already been posting! To read bradford29's post, which is about fast busy signals over Vonage, click here.

Our second announcement is that we have now exceeded a total of 35 million page views since we started the Vonage Forum four years ago this March. That's a real impressive number, but one impossible to meet and exceed without your clicks! We're already on the fast route to 36 million page views. Let's see how much time it takes for us to get there!

Because this is Monday morning, there isn't lots of Vonage news just yet. So we'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about a Vonage equipment recommendation.. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price. Because we did our In The Blogs feature just this past Monday, we'll be running it in this Monday edition as well.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On the title he has assigned his new thread, Vonage Forum Member jstore states what he is looking for: need a new 5.8ghz phone to use with Vonage.

"What do you guys use?," jstore asks his fellow Vonage Forum Members. "Since Vonage offers voicemail, a message machine is useless, yet it seems like every quality phone out there doesn't offer just the phone with a minimal base, i.e. no message machine/speaker phone/etc, just charger."

"Just want a phone that's headset capable and has a speakerphone on the handset," he adds. "Nothing else matters."

New Vonage Forum Member GiNa4XoXo , whose first name is Gina, is the first to respond.

"I just got the Panasonic 5.8 ghz digital phone and it works great," she writes. It has a speakerphone and voice enhancer and voice mail direct access. There's no answering machine, which is what I wanted, because we don't need one.

"The clarity is really good," she adds. "Check out the reviews. The one I got is model #KX-TG5421. It's silver and is nice-looking."

Next comes fellow Vonage Forum Member roscopco.

"I have the V-Tech IA-5849, this has a base with 2 extra handsets," he writes. "The base plugs into the Vonage adapter or your router and the 2 handsets just plug into a power outlet anywhere in the house, works so you don't need to use the phone jacks.

"With this phone if you answer with the main phone you can transfer the call to one of the other handsets, roscopco adds. "Once on the phone no one can listen on the other extensions. Has in use indicator and also voice mail indicator. You can select 3 types of ring tones or shut off the ringer, you can program the phone directory, I believe up to 50 names and numbers. Also has volume control.

And closing his post, roscopco points out that he has had no problems with interference with this phone.

Vonage Stock Report

On Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.06 a share, which was a big leap of 34 cents (+5.94%) from Thursday's closing price of $5.72 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Friday  amounted to 884,300 shares.

In The Blogs

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read have said about Vonage this past week.

Here's what the Voip bloggers have been writing about:

Andy Abramson of VoIP Watch writes about what he thinks the effects of AT&Ts new Unity calling plan could be on Vonage.

Om Malik of Om Malik's Broadband Blog has a different opinion about that than Andy does.

Tom Keating of VoIP Blog has his own opinion of AT&Ts Unity plan's effect on Vonage, which he mentions specifically.

Mark Evans of the Telecom .. and Tech blog (he's from Canada, which is a northern country, and writes more posts about telecom and tech) compares YouTube and Skype, listing Vonage as a key competitor to Skype.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog made a post in which he linked to one of our Vonage Forum threads entitled, My Callers Hear Buttons Being Pushed. The gist of that thread is one in which sometimes high-pitched female voices on Vonage calls can be misinterpreted as touch-tone dialing push buttons of Vonage lines.

Ted Wallingford of Signal To Noise writes lots of posts about some flashy new wireless and Voip services.

Garrett Smith of the Smith On Voip blog writes about some new Skype devices, as well as a major development in the Asterisk, open source-VoIP world.

From time to time, we like to feature interesting and entertaining posts from Blogs that are not necessarily about VoIP, but mention Vonage. On this MySpace blog I found earlier this morning which is called TuckerOnIce, blogger Tucker who is from Bowie, Maryland, writes, "We finally said Cya! to Verizon. I called them last month and asked them if they could compete in terms of dollars with Comcast Broadband and Vonage telephone service... the lady was honest, she said they couldn't. So now we have Vonage which is $32 a month cheaper than Verizon. Of course add in the Broadband its a bit more even, but it blows dial up away so I am sure we came out on top. Not to mention with the wireless router and laptop we can play trivia online together. :) I was really impressed that the whole wireless/broadband/Vonage set up was so easy to do and has worked flawlessly."

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that Choppy audio on Outgoing calls. QOS=6%, as well as Dlink WBR 2310 Router in front of Vonage adapter. Poor Audio which were the two Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today- featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow morning for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
