Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll learn when Vonage is planning to report its latest quarterly results. We'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about a modem problem that is affecting a user's outgoing Vonage calls,  and then a Vonage Forum thread about Vonage audio quality and what might be causing it. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price. Because we did our In The Blogs feature just this past Monday, we'll wait until this next Monday to do that again.

In The News

Vonage Getting Ready To Report Financial Results

Vonage will report its financial results for the fourth quarter and full year ended December 31, 2006 on Thursday, February 15, 2007. The earnings release will be available on Vonage's Investor Relations website at

Management will host a Webcast discussion of the quarter and full year results on Thursday, February 15, 2007 at 10:00 AM Eastern Time.

The Webcast will be broadcast live through Vonage's Investor Relations website at Windows Media Player or RealPlayer is required to listen to this Webcast. A replay will be available shortly after the live Webcast and will be available for two weeks.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member freshwater's outgoing Vonage connection had not been working fresh. Because of this, he's decided to launch a new Vonage Forum thread that he has entitled, Choppy audio on Outgoing calls. QOS=6%.

"I am using Vonage for more then a year with no problems," freshwater writes." I am observing that all my outgoing calls are getting very choppy. Incoming calls are fine." 

Then, some more details:

"I have AT&T DSL with premium speed of 6.0Mbps," freshwater adds. "My Vonage is connected to the Linksys Wireless WRT54GS V1.0 router thru a cable. Using Motorola Speedstream modem 4100. In Chicago. modem --> Router---> Vonage Adapter.

At this point, freshwater adds the results of his Vonage Speed Test. More information about that is later in this edition of the Digest.

Him having done so makes it easier for some of freshwater's fellow Vonage Forum Members to offer conclusions but even more important than that- to offer advice.

"Jitter and packet losses on the uplink are just awful," writes Steve48, who is our most frequent poster and is also Vonage Forum Member of the Week. "Re-cycle everything and re-run the test. If you get similar results, plug your computer directly into your modem and re-test. 

"If you still have poor results, then the problem is with your ISP," Steve48 adds. "If the results improve dramatically, then we need to troubleshoot your router and Vonage box.

Freshwater does just that and then comes back with a post in which he writes to steve48, "thanks for the advice. I reset my modem, router and Vonage adapter. Ran the test twice results looks good. What do you think was the problem?"

Fellow Vonage Forum Member Jose_7584 thinks he might know what the problem was that freshwater had been having.

"Are you using the upgraded version of Firmware in your Linksys router.....If not upgrade it.......Also check for the Firewall in your Cable Modem and the router......Check for the DOCSIS Version of your Cable Modem," he suggests that freshwater do.

A new Vonage Forum thread has been opened and it is called, Dlink WBR 2310 Router in front of Vonage adapter. Poor Audio. This thread was opened by Vonage Forum Member gilidawg79.

Here's how gilidawg79 describes his issue here:

"Here is my setup...Cable>Modem>Dlink WBR2310 Router/Firewall>Motorola 2142 Vonage Adapter.

"I have poor audio quality. It is very choppy however, the people on the other end say they can hear me fine.....After doing some research on this site, I have discovered that it could be that my phone adapter is getting shortchanged on packets because of my SPI firewall....That makes perfectly good sense....My firewall settings can be tweaked a little bit, I am just not sure which ones...I would assume in the "Application Rules" settings I could tweak the ports that traffic is flowing on..??????..There are options for a "Trigger Port" and a "Firewall Port" and "TCP" or "UDP" types of traffic. Is this where I can tweak this, or in the "Port Forwarding" section which looks identical in terms of settings?

"I believe my connection to the internet is ok, I have done lots of tests and it seems to be fine.....I thought that troubleshooting the firewall would be the best place to start since if it can be tweaked, I should do that first."

Next, gilidadawg79 adds the results of his Vonage Speed test to his post.

Steve48 reviews this information and takes it into consideration when he writes this follow-up post to 

"You're probably right about the firewall, and I can't advise you on that. However, the first thing I would do is temporarily remove the router and see if that fixes the phone problem," suggests Steve48. "If it does, put the router back in but with the firewall totally disabled. 

"If things are still good, then work the firewall issue," Steve48 adds. "Otherwise, go where the evidence leads.

Vonage Stock Report

On Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $5.72 a share, which was a decline of 30 cents from Wednesday's closing price of $6.02 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Thursday  amounted to 1,003,000 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

Poor Audio which were the two Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today- featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75
