Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 18, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll talk about Vonage's V-Access service. We'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about wireless router problems and then a Vonage Forum thread about a voice mail issue. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage V-Access Is Garnering Attention

Several websites and bloggers have become very interested in Vonage's new V-Access service.

V-Access enables you to make calls to any Vonage phone number or 800 number, without paying for long distance or international fees. Currently available in Canada, France, Italy, Mexico, Spain, the UK and US.

You dial your local access number and for no charge you'll avoid paying any long distance or international fees on calls to any Vonage phone number.

It works this way:

  1. Call a Local access number.
  2. Dial the Vonage phone number or 800 number that you want to call.
  3. You're connected without incurring long distance or international charges.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Sigh.... Wireless router problems is a thread that is about what it says it is about... wireless router problems. And the thread has been started by Vonage Forum Member JustK.

"I own a Linksys WRT54GX2 and the D-Link VTA phone adapter," JustK writes. "I've already read all of threads I could find pertaining to this specific router. I don't have the option to return the router or get another one.

"I have to make this work," JustK states. "Any calls outgoing or incoming cause my computer to lose its connection with the Internet.

"This only happens on my wireless computer," he tells us further. "My roommate's wired computer is unaffected. I would prefer to continue using my wireless connection. I tried setting the IP of the VTA in DMZ with no success. I also tried simply recycling everything with no luck. I do not yet fully understand how to use QOS yet. I will work on that tonight. Any other suggestions or help with QOS?"

Advice comes from fellow Vonage Forum Member outerfire, who asks the following questions in an attempt to point to the issues involved and what might be causing this problem:

"1) are you using a cordless phone?

2) What firmware revision are you running on it? (Linksys) I think there are some forums over at linksys that address some of the issues.

3) You may have an IP conflict. (probably would be with the wireless computer and the phone adapter.)

4) You may have to punch some holes in the router (i.e. port forward) of some UDP ports

*) QOS will be nice when its running but should not need to be tweaked to get the thing working correctly. IOW, that's not why you lose wireless connectivity."

New Vonage Forum Member iDOlog has decided to open a new Vonage Forum thread that he has named, Voice mail access cut off from one of two merged accounts.

Here's how he explains this issue:

"On Saturday I worked with Vonage's "advanced support" people to merge our two separate Vonage accounts into one. We had two routers--one Cisco/Linksys, the other Motorola, for a home line and work line respectively.

Now both lines work on the one Motorola router, and the Cisco is completely disconnected. All went well but for the total inability to access voice mail for the old work account, which used to be on the Cisco router.

Calling the number gives the following generic announcement:
"you may leave a message for the person you are calling by entering their mailbox number; to enter your mailbox number, press #" If you press pound and enter the work phone number, it says "the mailbox you have entered is invalid." Curiously, the exact same message and results obtain by dialing *123 from the work line.

An hour and half on the phone with Vonage yielded no progress. Ultimately we were told they'd "do a ticket," and we have to wait 48 hours to see if anything changes. That's way too long; this is a customer service number for our little company."

Once again, fellow Vonage Forum Member outerfire steps into the fire:

"I gather what you really did was take two lines on two routers and placed them both onto one router," writes outerfire. "I am curious as to why you would do that as I would think there would be some inherent benefits by having two routers each with one line. Benefits such as increased portability and also a ready backup incase one device failed.

"Other than trying to get a higher tech support, and tech support with this company does make life an adventure, it is definitely something on their end," outerfire adds. "I think you could just forward all calls to the working number for now and use that 1 voicemail box.

"Also, I'm posting this more than the 48 hours they gave you so I would hope that they have rectified the solution," outerfire closes his post by noting.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Friday morning for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
