Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

Not so much Vonage news today, so we'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about Vonage Caller I.D., and then a Vonage Forum thread about a Vonage user who says that some people she calls hears buttons being pushed on calls even when she is not doing so. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

Vonage Exec To Deliver Keynote

It has been announced that Michael Tribolet, President of Vonage America, Inc., will deliver a keynote address at the Internet Telephony & Conference in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., a week from tomorrow, January 25 between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. I know that several bloggers will be there, so in the following day's Digest, look for a report about what he talked about.

Here on the Vonage Forum, we get lots of questions and posts about Vonage Caller ID. An example is this new Vonage Forum thread that has been entitled, Vonage Caller ID format

"Hi all, I just singed up with Vonage - I haven't even used the system yet but I have a question about the Caller ID format," writes new Vonage Forum Member kschorz, who has started this thread. "When you receive a call is the CID in the form of XXX-XXX-XXXX?"

Then kschorz adds that he has heard rumors that the Vonage Caller I.D. format includes the country code, i.e. a '1' for the U.S., as the first number of the CID information.

"I have an extensive home automation system that is coded to run various tasks depending on the CID information of inbound callers and this only works if the CID is the normal 10 digit format," he adds.

"Unfortunately, Vonage CID format is 11 digits, starting with 1 then the 3 digit area code and 7 digit number," fellow Vonage Forum Member tmbeem answers.

Now here's one of the most interesting Vonage Forum threads I have seen in awhile. Vonage Forum Member lisa3876 has established a new thread that she has decided to entitle, My Callers Hear Buttons Being Pushed.

"When I'm talking with someone every now and then they complain of hearing buttons pushed on the phone when I'm not pushing anything," writes lisa3876, who is from Dallas, Tex. "Occasionally I can hear it too.

"My modem (as you'll see below) needs updating but I've used my Vonage service with other people's newer modems and still have the same problem," she explains. Then she includes her Vonage test statistics.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member EzCo provides the explanation.

"Yeah, this has been discussed many, many times in the past," he writes. "The tones you hear are called DTMF tones and can be triggered by higher frequency voices, such as a female voice."

Additional details are furnished in a post made by Vonage Forum Member DMS1.

"The root cause is that Vonage uses out-of-band signaling for DTMF tones," explains DMS1. "This means that your phone adapter detects the dual tones associated with button presses and transmits them separately to the actual audio. The other end then reconstructs the tones. 

"This is a very good practice with Voip because DTMF tones can get messed up by the voice compression (if low or medium quality is selected) or by jitter in the IP transport," DMS1 points out. "Unfortunately, the tone detection can occasionally detect false tones occurring as a result of normal speech. This is particularly true with female voices.

"If you ask Vonage, they may be able to turn off OOB DTMF signaling on your adapter," writes DMS1. "However, this may cause problems when you try entering information (account number) etc. using button presses."

Shuffle In The Top Ten

I am talking about the list of our ten most frequent posters. The list rarely changes.

In Monday's Digest, I reported that Steve48 has now become the Vonage Forum Member with the most posts. But now I just noticed that we have a new entry into the top ten. That would be mundy5, who is now in tenth place with some 606 posts at the time I am writing this edition of the Digest. And on the list, mundy5 replaces KDWycha, who joined us two years ago this coming Friday.

Vonage Stock Report

On Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.30 a share, which was a decline of 17 cents (-2.63%) from Friday's closing price of $6.47 a share, but then again it was five cents higher than the session's low price of $6.25 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Tuesday amounted to  974,000 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75
