Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 16, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Not so much Vonage news today, so we'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about a repeat caller problem of suspicious origin, and then a Vonage Forum thread about Vonage dial tones. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Repeat caller problem is a very important and new Vonage Forum thread. It has been started by Vonage Forum Member bsaucer.

Here's how he describes this issue:

"I've got a problem/issue I need guidance for. I keep receiving a call at random times of the day. The caller ID says 000-000-0000. If I don't know who it is, I don't answer. It might be a telemarketer, someone soliciting for funds, a bill collector, or someone with a cell phone, or someone with a job offer.

I figure if the call was important they would leave a message on the automated Vonage answering service. Sometimes the caller is persistent. The phone would ring, the display shows all zeros. It rings four times, stops, and then rings four times again. This can happens non stop.

So I put my telephone in "answering machine" mode. The phone answered after four rings. They hang up, and immediately call again.

So finally I unplug my Vonage adapter for ten minutes or so. When I plug it back in, everything is OK, but then it starts up an hour or so later.

I go online and look at my call records. Sure enough, I receive calls from the number 000-000-0000 several times a minute. Whoever is doing that couldn't be using a PSTS phone. They must be doing it directly on the Internet.

I told Vonage tech support about the repeat caller, but they say they can't act unless I file a police report.

One thing someone mentioned in the forums is the possibility of "flash callback", which sometimes occurs if a "flash" occurs when you hang up the phone. However, this seems to be occurring at random times, even if I had not been on the phone."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member cbt1 writes a post that sheds some light on this issue.

"I am glad someone posted this to the Forum," cbt1 writes. "I would like to know how many others have been actually getting the same thing," cbt1 writes, adding, "bsaucer, I too was getting the 000-000-0000 for a while but it was periodic and I thought it was some strange marketing company with a blocked number. So I really never looked any farther into this."

"However over the past week it has escalated I started getting calls from 727 541 000," cbt1 adds. "If you will put these numbers into a Google search engine you will find that many other people are having the same issues. In fact it looks to be some sort of a CC scam to get access to your account! Now the 727 number no longer calls and I am getting this number calling ( same thing) 813 541 0001 not as much on Google."

He then points to links such as, which explain what is going on here.

"I advise you if you do get a live person on the line do not verify any information they will entice you with a shopping spree or gas card or something," cbt1 adds. "The numbers are Verizon Wireless.

"The real question is who let our CC information leak to this company?"

Next, fellow Vonage Forum Member churchman writes a post, describing how he was hooked. It's a very long post, but one worth reading. If you follow on with this thread, you will see it in this thread.

A question common to the Vonage Forum is asked by new Vonage Forum Memphis in a thread he has decided to open and name, Dial tone.

"I'm new to Vonage. I've only had it about a week and all seems to be working fine," writes Memphis.

But now comes this question he's asking.

"However, whenever I pickup one of my phones, the dial tone has about 5 rapid beeps before going steady. It doesn't seem to effect anything and the phone dials normally," Memphis writes. "Does this odd dial tone mean something, or, is it just a characteristic of the Vonage dial tone?"

Following up is Steve48, our all-time posts champ and also our Vonage Forum Member of the Week. And with this post, Steve48 shows once again that he is willing to tackle the not-so-complex issues posed by Vonage Forum Members as well as the more complex questions.

"It means that you have voice mail on the Vonage system," he writes. "It's called a stutter tone."

And for more reassurance:

"Steve's right," adds fellow Vonage Forum Member alma_16. Don't worry, it should go off once you have read those voicemail messages.

Vonage Stock Report

Because of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday in the U.S.., the stock exchanges were closed in the U.S. and no Vonage stock was traded yesterday. On Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.47 a share, which was a decline of one cent (0.15%) from Thursday's closing price of $6.48 a share, but then again it was six cents higher than the session's low price of $6.41 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Thursday reached 383,300 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Wednesday morning for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
