Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 12, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Not too much Vonage news today, so we'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about call blocking, as well as a thread about an installation issue. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price. Just for this week, we will do our In The Blogs section in Monday's edition.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Phone number blocking is a new Vonage Forum thread established by Vonage Forum Member pomc.

"Is it possible to block incoming calls from certain phone numbers?," pomc asks. "I've poked around and did not see any option, but I could've overlooked it."

Well, pomc, the topic you raised is a popular one here. First, let me indicate what two other Vonage Forum Members wrote about this in reaction to your post. And then I will point you to a resource where you can state your opinion.

"There's no Vonage feature that can do that," answers fellow Vonage Forum Member EzCo.

"LOL," writes navydavy2001. "Go check out the "VOIP Feature Request" Forum here and you'll see your answer plain as day. You might even leave a post over there."

Now what navydavy2001 is talking about is the Voip Feature Wish List Forum section of the Vonage Forums.

What features would you like Vonage to offer that are not yet available? Vonage Forum Members have started threads with their requests, and this section of the Vonage Forum is where you will find these lists. I also know for a fact that many people at Vonage read this section (as well as the whole Vonage Forum site) regularly, and are open to new service feature ideas!

Our Voip Feature Wish List Forum recently climbed over 400 topics. Even if you don't post, you'll find this a very interesting Forum to read. Here's the direct link.

Now let us hit another Vonage Voip Forum thread. Installation Issue is the name of this thread, and it was started by new Vonage Forum Member gcrewss.

"I recently purchased a house about six months ago, and when the walls were down, I had an electrician come in and wire every room with cable, ethernet, and phone jacks," gcrewss writes. "Cable works fine, ethernet works fine, however he left the cat5e cabling that is going to be used for the phone jacks unconnected to anything, stating that the phone company would take care of wiring it.

"That may have been true if I was using a traditional phone company, but since I use Vonage, I would like to put the adapter in the basement," gcrewss explains. "I have done some research, and I think I need a 66 or 110 punch block."

And now to the most specific question part of gcrewss' post:

"How do I connect this punch block to the Vonage adapter?," he asks. "I will be doing the job myself, so I am looking for a step by step, either from a vendor web site, or from someone on these forums that has actually done this themselves."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member mundy5 offers a detailed answer.

"Yes, you would need some kind of punch down block," mundy5 writes. "I am surprised that you do not have a central box already with all the new wiring placed into your home. Anyway, you will need a punch down block and if your modem and other networking equipment is in the same central area, then you would want to punch in a cat5e for your Vonage.

"I think the easier solution however is to have your modem and the networking equipment in one of the rooms and simply plug in your Vonage telephone wire into the phone jack and that should light up your entire home," mundy5 adds.

Next, mundy5 makes sure to add this cautionary note:

"Be sure to do something with the hanging wire outside your home (I am presuming that it is not connected to an NIU from the telco)," he writes, "though since that would create a short if it is not properly stowed in the home."

Vonage Stock Report

On Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.48 a share, which was a decline of three cents from Wednesday's closing price of $6.51 a share, but then again it but then again it was eight cents higher than the session's low price of $6.43 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Thursday attained 481,400 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Monday morning for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our In the Blogs feature as well as our Vonage Forum Member of the Week!
