Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll learn about what Vonage Chairman Jeffrey Citron thinks is important these days. We'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about a network gateway issue associated with the Vonage service, and also there's this thread about a router that may be going bad. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

Vonage Chairman Citron Talks About Lots of Stuff

The website SeekingAlpha reprints an interview that Vonage Chairman Jeffrey Citron did with Barron's at the Consumer Electronics Show this week.

The interview explores Citron's feelings about the deal to resell EarthLink Wi-Fi service, some new Vonage equipment, as well as Vonage's advertising and marketing plans for the immediate future, and the state of shareholder lawsuits against Vonage.

New Vonage Forum Member websta asks an interesting question in a new Vonage Forum thread he's kicked off and called, improved signal strength by avoiding clashing gateways?

"Due to help found in valuable forums like this one, even a newbie like me was able to figure out how to connect 3 Linksys routers correctly," websta writes. "I was limping along but my wireless coverage was poor and I wanted to move my WCG200 to a better location. However, by correcting the problems I had with the RT31P2 and BEFSRU31, the coverage improved dramatically.

"Is it possible that having routers configured incorrectly (as gateways instead of routers) it can cause these kinds of problems?," he asks.

And then websta explains:

"The WCG200 is a combo cable modem and wireless router so I have it set up as my gateway. The other two were mistakenly set up as gateways but are now correctly configured as routers. With the WCG200 in the basement, I've gone from very low signal strength to very good on the second floor. Does this make any sense?"

At this point new and very active and helpful Vonage Forum Member margulis9 offers an explanation and advice.

"Just moving your router is going to increase or decrease the signal strength," he writes. "There are many factors that determine signal strength, especially when it comes to location. However, the gateway/router setting will not affect signal strength, or at least in my logical opinion it shouldn't.

"The gateway is just a router that can connect a LAN (Local Area Network) to a WAN (Wide Area Network), and with that setting it can only route LAN addresses," margulis9 points out.

In a new thread called Phone Works but no Internet Access with RT300, Vonage Forum Member Sabawaka writes:

"I have been using Vonage for over 2 years using a Motorola Modem. Over the last couple of weeks, I have been experiencing frequent loss of internet access and have to power cycle my modem and keep it off for up to 15 minutes to get back internet access. Now I have been unable to get internet access even after turning off the modem for hours. I do have internet access if I connect one of my two PCs directly to the cable modem.

I am not an expert in checking IP addresses and the likes but any instructions to help me out will be appreciated.

My current setup is:

Internet--->Motorola Modem--->RT300---> 2 PCs"

Vonage Forum Member mundy5 answers:

"There is one simple way to check. Plug one of your computers directly to the modem and see if you lose your internet at all during the day. If it does, then it's an issue with your ISP and your modem. If however, you do not lose any internet connectivity, then most likely, your rtp300 is starting to break down.

95% of the time, I've seen posts of losing the phone connection and rarely having the phone work but not internet. Does your phone work even when you internet is down when plugged into the rtp300? Then if it still works, chances are your router is starting to die a slow death."

And to that, Sabawaka answers:

"Mundy5, Thanks for your comments. I connected one of the PCs directly to the modem last night and when I left for work this morning I was still having internet access. Will check again when I get home in about 2 hours, and I expect it to be fine. Yes, I do get phone connection through the RT300 even when I do not have internet access. Although of late my wife has been complaining of lost calls and poor clarity.

Assuming the worst case that I need to replace the RT300, what is the most current "recommended" version of router to buy? Can I buy it from Best Buy and the likes? Can Vonage pay for a replacement Router?"

Mundy5 comes back and writes:

"I believe that Vonage will only replace a router if they and the key word is they determine that it is broken and that it is under warranty. I believe it is under warranty for only a short amount of time. I recommend that you double check with Vonage directly."

With this info, margolis9 writes a follow-up post in which he adds:

"Yeah, that last issue seals the deal. Your RT300 is getting ready to take a dive. Here is why. Network cable unplugged comes up if the computer doesn't detect a connection. There are a few reasons why that would happen. The most common reasons are:

1. Your router is dropping the connection.
2. The NICs are dropping connection.
3. The cables themselves are bad.

Let's think about probability. It is highly unlikely that two NICs would be bad, and highly unlikely that two cables would be bad. It is likely, however, that one router is going south. Also, if cables are bad, then it just doesn't work, there is no in between with those unless there is a split somewhere and the broken wires are rubbing together. Again, unlikely that it would happen to two of them at the same time."


Vonage Stock Report

On Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.51 a share, which was a rise of seven cents from Tuesday's closing price of $6.44 a share and an 11 cents climb from the session's lowest Vonage price and that was $6.40 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Wednesday reached 282,600 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75
