Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 10, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll read a section of a new review about the Vonage V-Phone, as well as let you know where you can hear Vonage Chairman Jeffrey Citron speak today. We'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about using a device that combines VoIP and router together, as well as a thread about using another phone provider's ATA device with Vonage's service. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

PC Magazine Reviews the Vonage V-Phone

Davis Janowski of PC Magazine Likes the Vonage V-Phone. Here's his summary of the review just posted:

"With the Vonage V-Phone and a subscription to Vonage service, you can make calls from any broadband Internet-connected PC that has an available USB port, whether you're in an airport, a hotel, an Internet café, at school, the library, or a public kiosk—even a busy trade-show floor (that's where I first used the phone)," he writes. "Though this highly portable, bright orange USB thumbdrive doesn't look like a phone, it has an automated softphone on board and supports one Vonage phone line. I was initially quite skeptical, but the phone is surprisingly simple to set up and works quite well."

Here's the link to the full review.

Jeff Citron speaks today- And You Can Listen In

Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist, Jeffrey A. Citron, will speak at the Citigroup 17th Annual Entertainment, Media & Telecommunications Conference today  at 2:30 PM PT. The event will be held at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas.

The presentation will be simultaneously webcast and accessible via Vonage's Investor Relations website at

Shortly after the event, a replay will be available on Vonage's Investor Relations website for two weeks.

On The Vonage VoIP Forum

New Vonage Forum Member BlitzBike begins a Vonage Forum thread that he has entitled, Is there a Device that combines Voip and Router together?

"Trying to eliminate there a ROUTER that also supports Voip available?," he asks.

And in asking that question, BlitzBike draws responses from two of our most knowledgeable Vonage Forum Members. But that doesn't mean they agree.

So let us look at the responses of Steve48 and navydavy2001.

"Several of the Vonage supplied devices are combination router/VoIP adapters," writes Steve48. "These include the D-link VWR, the Motorola VT2442, and the VT2142. Others, like the Linksys RTP300 and WRTP54G may still be available at retail. None of these are heavy duty routers, but they do work for light duty."

But here's a different response from navydavy2001.

"Yet again, I will reiterate why I hate these topics," navydavy2001 writes.

"Combo devices are inherently a dangerous mix, because if you depend on one device to do everything," he adds. "1) It may die a quicker death comparatively, due to the increased workload. 2) If it dies prematurely, not only do you not have phone, but no Internet. 3) If only ONE portion of it dies, and the other keeps operating, you have half a device, and will probably wind up throwing out the whole thing."

"I'm a networking guy and all about reliability and redundancy, but if you're fairly comfortable with the above, go for it," he adds. Just make sure you have another device handy in case the unexpected happens."

Vonage Forum Member homintern, who has been with us here on the Vonage Forum for more than two years, has a question the likes of which he asks in the title he uses for his new Vonage Forum thread called Using another providers ATA device on a Linksys WRT54GP2.

"I have a Linksys WRT54GP2 with Vonage and I'm wondering whether plugging another provider's ATA device into one of the standard ports (not one of the Vonage phone ports) will work," writes homintern. "My 'other' provider is in a country not served by Vonage (and not likely to be - it's in SE Asia) so I want a local number there using the VoIP device sourced in that country, but plugged into my Linksys WRT54GP2."

And here's Steve48 being Johnny on the spot with the answer homintern needs:

"It should work fine," he answers.

Vonage Stock Report

On Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.44 a share, which was a dip of 15 cents from Monday's closing price of $6.59 a share, but then again it was two cents more than the session's low price of $6.42 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Tuesday reached 597,100 shares.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today.

Check with us Thursday morning for our next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.
