Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 9, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll let you know where you can hear Vonage Chairman Jeffrey Citron speak tomorrow. We'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about attempting to call regional toll free numbers with Vonage and another thread about some Vonage equipment problems. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist, Jeffrey A. Citron, will speak at the Citigroup 17th Annual Entertainment, Media & Telecommunications Conference tomorrow  at 2:30 PM PT. The event will be held at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas.

The presentation will be simultaneously webcast and accessible via Vonage's Investor Relations website at

Shortly after the event, a replay will be available on Vonage's Investor Relations website for two weeks.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member sumner has started a new thread that he's decided to name, Can't call regional toll free numbers with Vonage.

"On two occasions, when I called an 800 number using my Vonage phone, I got a message that the call can not be completed from my phone," sumner writes. "When I call the same numbers from my cell phone, I have no problem connecting. These are business phone numbers that are provided to clients in the Los Angeles area.

Then sumner writes that he called Vonage customer support to fix what he thought was a problem with my phone service, and was told that Vonage does not support regional toll free numbers. "The reason provided is that all toll free calls are routed through a New York server, and if the toll free number does not allow calls from New York, the call is blocked," he writes.

"The problem needs to be fixed, but there is no schedule for fixing it," sumner states. "It is a true service limitation that should be disclosed to the consumer. I have not been able to find anything in the Vonage terms of service, or any other disclosure of this limitation. Is someone trying to address this issue?

Steve48 has an answer-but maybe not one that sumner might want to read.

"You're correct. This is a known issue with Vonage that has been discussed on the forum," Steve48 writes. "You understand, though, that the forum isn't run or owned by Vonage. We can talk about it, but no one here can fix it. I haven't heard about Vonage working on it.

"As Voip becomes more popular, my guess is that the businesses that have these numbers will begin to understand the issue," Steve48 adds. "I suspect that regional toll free numbers will disappear. For now, we have a problem."

Vonage Forum Member ChinaMike has started a new thread that he's calling, VT1005 will not register with Vonage.

Here's what he has written about the problems he's had with the Motorola VT1005:

Light flashes 4 times on VT1005 system has been fine in current configuration for 10 months, until recently problem has been intermittent, but has gotten worse and now cannot get a solid light originally solved by resetting all parts of network ADSL Modem --> D Link DI-604 (ppoe enabled) --> VT1005 moved the VT1005 behind the modem, but no luck -- stuck at 2 flashes for no IP address know others with same network, but no problem.

"I'm in China and will take VT1005 to US with me next week will see what happens, but thinking of replacing with PAP2 at end of network anyone with similar issues in USA???," asks ChinaMike.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member restart88 writes:

"You might want to follow my post in this thread: This appears to be a growing issue as others are saying the same thing.

And then ChinaMike follows up with a reply.

"DLink DI 504 (Chinese version of DI 604) needed to have logs, etc. cleared," ChinaMike writes.

"Basically took it back to factory defaults and reset PPOe," he explains. "Also moved phone to Port 2."

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Wednesday morning for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including 2007's first Vonage Forum Member of the Week!
