Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 8, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll hit a major announcement from Vonage and EarthLink about a new Wi-Fi service from Vonage. We'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about firmware issues for some Vonage equipment,, and another thread about charging up a Vonage F-1000 Wi-Fi Phone. Because this is Monday, we'll meet our Vonage Forum Member of the Week. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage said this morning is going to resell wireless Internet services from EarthLink, in cities where EarthLink operates municipal Wi-Fi networks.

These cities include New Orleans, Philadelphia and also Milpitas, Cal.

No pricing yet, but reports indicate that the Vonage resell will be bundled with Vonage's Voip offering and will support a "next generation" Wi-Fi phone that hasn't been introduced as of yet.

This is part of a three year deal Vonage has signed with EarthLink to buy Internet service wholesale and then resell it under the Vonage brand name. Vonage will also provide wireless modems, and appropriate firmware to customers who sign on for this Wi-Fi access repacked under the Vonage name.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member karkalec has some questions, which he has incorporated into a new Vonage Forum thread he has started and has named, wrt54g firmware/QoS.

"I'm getting ready to try configuring QoS on my Linksys router due to horrible call quality on my Vonage phone," he writes. "I've read recommendations on keeping newest Linksys firmware, sveasoft alchemy, and hyperwrt. all the posts I've read are over a year old. can anyone give me some updated information on what would work best?"

Not long after karkalec put up this post, he's begun to get some excellent and thorough suggestions from other Vonage Forum Members.

First up is Littlehewy. Here's what he writes:

"I had the same router and tried everything, port forwarding, MTU timing, QoS, etc. Nothing worked. If you have an extremely busy home network or several computers and use a P2P or online gaming this is what worked for me.

This is an Email I sent to Vonage customer svc to advise them of the fix I found.

I like a lot of folks have been working with bad quality issues for a while with my router. I talked with a couple of folks at work that were also having issues and this item listed above seems to have solved all of our quality issues. No more messing with QoS, port forwarding and MTU settings. This thing is literally plug and play.

On my network I have 360kbps of uplink speed but with multiple computers, online gaming and P2P programs the choppy audio was present especially with P2P such as BitTorrent, Azerus. This little $70 gadget works. As a stockholder in your company I would highly recommend that you list this for anyone having audio problems with outgoing voice.

The above item solved all of my audio quality items and seems to have also worked for my friends at work having issues with both Vonage and Skype."

Next came NateHoy with his sage advice:

I have a WRT54G V4, and it works great. The trick is to tune the QoS, which is explained on my self-help article here:

"Currently, I am using "Tomato" firmware which you can read up on here:

"HyperWRT Thibor, which many of my articles make reference to, is also excellent firmware," NateHoy adds.

Now we are going to do something new here. It seems that two new Vonage Forum threads point to questions and issues about charging the battery in the Vonage F-1000 Wi-Fi phone.

The threads, which are about the Vonage UT Starcom F-1000 phone, are named Vonage F1000 Not Charging, and then Vonage F1000 Wi-Fi Users in Montreal. Each of these threads have been started by Vonage Forum Member bobdxb.

As to bobdxb's questions about charging the F1000 and then making sure it stays charged, Vonage Forum Member che offers a very helpful answer.

"Just in case your Starcom is very new," che writes, "you should charge the battery 10-12 hours when you first receive it and you will know it needs charging when low-battery message is displayed: PLACE IN CHARGER...

"By the way, phone automatically charges when handset is in its charger," che makes sure to add.

Meet Our First Vonage Forum Member of the Week in 2007

Once the Holidays ended, I noticed that NateHoy has hopped back on board, being quick to answer Vonage Forum Member questions and also pointing to his numerous articles that have to do with specific questions in posts he has been answering. That's par for the course for Nate, who we honor once again as Vonage Forum Member of the Week. To browse through a list of some of Nate's most recent posts, click here.

Vonage Stock Report

On Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.52 a share, which was a drop of nine cents from Thursday's closing price of $6.61 a share, but then again it was more than the session's low price of $6.51 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Friday got to 314,600 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Tuesday morning for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including 2007's first Vonage Forum Member of the Week!
