Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 5, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll learn about a key Vonage executive appointment. We'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about using calling cards with Vonage. Because this is Friday, we'll learn what some of the bloggers have been writing about Vonage recently. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage today announced that its interim president of Vonage Network Inc. since June 2006, Tim Smith, has been officially appointed to the post.

As president of Vonage Network Inc., a subsidiary of Vonage Holdings Corp., Smith will oversee all of Vonage's network and systems operations globally and manage the Vonage Network staff.

Before joining Vonage in July 2005 as senior vice-president of Network and Systems Infrastructure, Tim worked in various management roles for leading technology companies including Sun Microsystems Inc., UUNET Technologies Inc. and Wayport, Inc.

"Tim has 20 years of experience designing, deploying, operating and maintaining Internet service delivery systems and I am excited that he will be assuming the permanent role as president of Vonage Network," said Vonage CEO Mike Snyder. "Vonage will continue to benefit from Tim's demonstrated record of leadership of technical teams as we continue to drive technical solutions to improve customer service."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member vertical has begun a thread that he has decided to entitle, calling cards using Vonage.

"How do you make international calls using your Vonage line?," he asks. "Vonage CSR says I cannot use any calling cards which is just another 800 number. For instance, I make frequent calls to India but I cannot use Vonage for that."

Then vertical tells us that after dialing the 800 # for the calling card he cannot dial a pin or international #.

"I get a message 'only direct dialed calls allowed,'" he tells us. "Vonage is forcing me to use their "Cheapest" rates to make international calls. I know I can use Reliance India's easy dial to get thru, but I cannot make easy dial entries every time I get a new contact.

"Is there a solution for this?," vertical asks to close his thread-opening post.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member spdickey has an answer for vertical.

Here's what spdickey writes:

It works for me... try these instructions:

Toll-free Numbers
Type of service To call India To call other countries*
Prepaid 1-866-3-RELIANCE 1-866-494-7292

Placing calls through Reliance India Call from an unregistered phone is simple:
a. Dial the Toll-free Access number
b. When prompted, enter your 11-digit registered phone number followed by PIN (Personal Identification Number).
c. When prompted, enter the destination number, starting with country code + the city code + the destination number. (For example, to call the number 32345678 in Mumbai, you would dial "91 22 32345678"). You do not have to dial '011' (the international access code).

In The Blogs

I regularly read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read have said about Vonage recently.

Here's what the Voip bloggers have been writing about Vonage these last couple of weeks:

Jon Arnold writes that too much of the media lump Vonage and Skype together. "Sure, they're both VoIP, but as I've said over and over, Skype is a complement to subscriber-based services like Vonage - and not a replacement," Jon writes. "Sure, SkypeOut is now a paid service - I just signed up myself - but even Skype makes it clear on their website that this is not a landline replacement service."

Jeff Pulver of writes that Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron will be a keynote speaker at the Spring 2007 Von show in San Jose this March.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog explores an idea first proposed by an advertising executives that Vonage ads should appear prior to some YouTube videos.

From time to time, we like to feature interesting and entertaining posts from Blogs that are not necessarily about VoIP, but mention Vonage. In this new My Space blog I found early this morning, blogger Misty Dawn writes her 30 Things You'd Never Think To Ask. As to Question number 12, "What's your favorite commercial?," Misty Dawn writes "those crazy Vonage commercials."

And that's a natural segue to...

It's no secret that Vonage's tv commercials are popular, and quite funny. On the Vonage TV Commercials section of the Vonage Forum, we have a list of around 20 of these commercials. Want to watch one? Click on the name of the tv commercial and you'll go to a page with the commercial playing. You can watch the same commercial over and over, or pause if you want to freeze-frame. And there's no special streaming media software to install!

Vonage Stock Report

On Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.61 a share, which was a drop of nine cents from Wednesday's closing price of $6.70 a share, but then again it was a 4-cent climb from the session's low price of $6.57 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Thursday reached 391,300 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Monday morning for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including 2007's first Vonage Forum Member of the Week!
