Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 3, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. Still catching up from the Holidays. How about you?

In the news, we'll catch up about where Vonage's Initial Public Offering ranked in comparison with other IPOs last year. We'll go straight to this Vonage Forum thread about Vonage call connection issues, as well as a thread from a Vonage user who seems to be experiencing technical issues that are preventing him from calling some other Vonage users. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

According to the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper, the Vonage IPO of last May was the largest Initial Public Offering of the year.

"The largest IPO of the year was for broadband telephone service provider Vonage, which raised $531.3 million in May," the newspaper notes this morning.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage phone connects to my cell phone voice mail box, admin is the title given an interesting new Vonage Forum thread by new Vonage Forum Member texasbiker

"This is weird," texasbiker writes. "I signed up yesterday, got the Linksys PAP2 device at Best Buy. All is working fine, calls are great quality."

But you know that texasbiker would not have started this thread if everything was OK. So let's hear texasbiker's story:

"My wife calls tonight, says, I called your cell phone from the Vonage phone and it went right to the admin side of your voice mail and I listened to all your messages... My Cell phone never rang... no evidence of an inbound call from the Vonage phone. She calls my cell from a land line and it rings, will roll to voice mail but not into my admin side of my cell phone voice mail."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member noct has some observations.

"Sounds like you have either call forwarding or simulring on, or you have network availability on and you're experiencing Internet connection problems. with simulring, first phone to answer first gets the call, even if it's a voicemail box," he writes.

We'll track this thread for a resolution.

And by the way, cool name, texasbiker,

On the Local Number Portability Forum area of the Vonage Forums, new Vonage Forum Member TonyG explains his issue in a post he has started and entitled Unable to receive calls from Vonage customers.

"Several months ago I ported my phone number from Vonage to Viatalk," he writes. "Ever since I switched services, other Vonage customers have not been able to call me; they call my number and get someone else instead."

Then TonyG says he has called Vonage to request that they release his number from their database but was told they could not do it because they had assigned my very same phone number to another Vonage customer.

"So now you have two households in the Houston area with the very same number, although all calls from non-Vonage numbers have no problems getting through to me," explains TonyG, who says he has not been able to get Vonage to rectify the problem just yet.

But then fellow Vonage Forum Member IronHelix writes that indeed, he was able to get the same issue resolved.

"I had the same problem. It got fixed up somewhat fast though, once I managed to explain to level1 tech what was going on they transferred me to level2," IronHelix writes.  "I waited on hold for about an hour and the guy figured out what happened pretty quickly, he had to call the new number owner and leave a voice mail but when that guy called back it was fixed up in about 24hrs. Took another ticket to get it out of the database but at least it wasn't going to someone else."

Based on that experience, IronHelix has some advice for TonyG.

"I'd suggest find someone that has Vonage and use their Vonage line to call your own number, then you can talk to the people that 'have it'. Explain politely what's going on, chances are they will feel as annoyed as you do," IronHelix writes. "Then maybe you can 3-way call to tech support and get it fixed up? Even if Vonage doesn't care, the other guy probably will be wondering why nobody can call him."

"Once you get him off the line then its easy, call level1 tech and ask them to put in a ticket called 'remove DID from database' then it will get fixed up," he adds.

Check Out Our Local Number Portability Forum

That last thread called Unable to receive calls from Vonage customers was from our Local Number Portability Forum.

Vonage Forum Members often come to Vonage after realizing that Vonage service is a better deal than they have with their existing or former carrier. Even though they would like to change carriers, they want to keep the same phone number, which is understandable. In this section of the Vonage Forum, you will find a linked list of threads about Local Number Portability issues.

With more than 770 topics and 4,400 posts, the Vonage Local Number Portability Forum is our second-most popular forum, trailing only the Vonage Voip Forum itself. So go take a look! Here's the direct link to the Local Number Portability Forum.

Vonage Stock Report

Vonage shares were not traded yesterday, because of the Federal Holiday declared in commemoration of President Gerald Ford. On last Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.94 a share, which was a drop of 3 cents from Thursday's closing price of $6.977 a share, but then again it was a five cent climb from the session's low price of $6.89 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on last Friday added up to reach 835,400 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Thursday morning for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
