Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

December 21, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.  We'll catch up on the latest news involving Vonage. Then we'll read this Vonage Forum thread about the Vonage V-Phone and then there's another  thread with a router-related question. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Is Second Largest Internet Advertiser In 2006

According to figures from marketing research firm Nielsen/Net Ratings, Vonage has been the second-largest Internet advertiser in 2006. Through November 30, Vonage has spent $294.9 million in online ads. First by a wide margin was GUS Plc which until mid-October operated both the Argos Retail Group and credit reporting agency Experian; on Oct. 10, GUS Plc was split into two divisions. Third behind Vonage was online movie rental company Netflix ($242.5 million).

Vonage Forum Reaches 37,000 Members

Yesterday when New Vonage Forum Member EXTREMUM joined up here that meant we had reached 37,000 Vonage Forum Members. Welcome, EXTREMUM. I see you have already begun posting, and have some answers as well. In light of and appreciation of that, let's highlight a thread in which you have participated.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member HAPYMUDY has some questions about the Vonage V-Phone and Softphone. To get these questions answered, he's opened a thread that he has named, V-Phone with Existing Line?

"I am curious about the V-Phone, and even thought my service is fantastic, I'd LOVE to be able to also use the V-Phone at work, travel, etc.," HAPYMUDY writes.

"Will I need to use another number or transfer my number?," he asks. "Or is there a way to use my V-Phone using the same phone number, just a different location? It would be AWESOME if I could use the V-Phone as simply another extension at home! ;}."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member che is first up with advice.

"Actually, a V-phone comes with a Vonage number," che writes. "What I could suggest is maximize the new feature of Vonage i.e. Move-a-number. "If you have a Vonage device at home and you have a V-Phone (which you plan to take w/ you while traveling), just switch the numbers in your web account."

HAPYMUDY follows up with a post in which he asks:

"Sounds good. But just to be clear, if I buy a V-Phone with a new number it will mean an additional monthly service, correct? I want to keep everything at home as it is, can't really port that number to this portable."

It is at this point when our 37,000th Vonage Forum Member, EXTREMUM, supplies a very helpful answer.

"If you decide to activate the V-Phone with the new number, you will be paying for an additional line," EXTREMUM writes. "However, you can use your EXISTING number, between your home Vonage router, and V-Phone.

"All you have to do is call customer once, to give them the MAC ADDRESS of your V -hone USB unit, and they'll transfer your existing number to the V-Phone," he adds. "When you decide to switch your existing number back to your home Vonage Router, you can simply login to your own account, and transfer the number back on your own."

New Vonage Forum Member razz has just started a thread called Linksys WRTP54G

"I am on a wireless network," razz writes. "I access the internet through a 302.11G wifi.

"I bought a Vonage Linksys WRTP54G," informs razz to us. "The people at the store said that it would work as a switch. Must like most Linksys Routers. In other words, I wish to use the WIFI on the Vonage Router to access my wireless network which would give it its Internet connection. This is a simple feat with most Linksys Routers."

Several Vonage Forum Members reply to razz' thread-opening post.

"So, you are looking to have your WRTP54G act as a wireless client, and get its internet connection over the antenna rather than through the LAN port?," NateHoy asks.

"Unfortunately, that isn't possible with the WRTP54G.

"Your best bet is to get a WRT54GL, load up aftermarket firmware (HyperWRT, DD-WRT, or my current favorite - Tomato), and use that," NateHoy advises. "Tomato even runs on the cheaper Buffalo WHR-G54S and Buffalo WHR-HP-G54S routers, if you want to save a few bucks."

Nate then suggests that razz visit:

And then we have fellow Vonage Forum Member mundy5 with some advice of his own.

"I concur with NateHoy's post," mundy5 writes. "However, you can consider using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) through your computer and see if the Vonage router will connect.

Then mundy5 tells razz that he will face quality issues due to the latency but it's worth a try since you already have the device. He suggests that mundy5 do a search on this Forum for the term, ICS and he should find instructions on how to enable it.

Vonage Stock Report

On Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $7.17 a share, which was a rise of nine cents (+1.27%)  from Tuesday's closing price of $7.08 a share but then again it was 19 cents higher than the session low which was $6.99 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Wednesday added up to reach 327,900 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Friday morning for our Holidays edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest. Since tomorrow is Friday we'll also review what some of the bloggers have written about Vonage this week.
